  • Speechless. Awesome rendition.

  • Great job. What you do between 2:15 and 2:25 is not part of the original but brilliant.

  • @glevito

Yes it is. Tatum did different recordings of many songs.

  • Wonderful work Bro

  • You are amazing! Great work :)

  • wow.. you nailed art's touch pretty damn close man! very impressive, the best i've seen on youtube playing art tatum.

  • This boy does Tatum like very few others, so just don't look at the dude if you lot out there don't like the fact that he is not Tatum, sure sounds like him though and unarguably one of if not the best out there to date that I've heard doing that thang. Moreover a lot of Tatum's work got thrown and here is a guy reviving the legend yet there are those talkers who care criticise. Thanks Chris for showing all of us out there how it should be done.

  • Loved it, Man. Your work is great. You should hook up with the Art Tatum Jazz Society in Toledo. They'd love you (if they don't know you already.) Bravo!

  • You deserve way more views.Very nice.....

  • Thank you For your support everyone. I am moving to NY City for a Month. Come check me out practicing at the Steinway Factory NY... dates to be decided...

  • Hey man great job. Don't let years of practice go to waist over a stupid comment on youtube. Clearly you've been playing longer than the youtube hate club foundation existed. You are one of the definitions of a gifted musician.

  • congratulations M. Jordan & thank you for reviving this master piece...

  • i have just started jazz piano and i am 13, i love this style of music and i was thinking because i am willing to practice many hours a day (like 8 hours during the summer) but do you think it is too late too reach this standard or am i just being pointlessly negative?

    Thanks and this was great!

  • only one way to find out right? Either way if you practice for that long you're going to be fking awesome! I started the same age as you and one of my biggest regrets is not giving piano my all when I had the time to do it... I say go for it.

  • Thanks for the advice very much appreciated!

  • I have listened to this tune by Art so many times I know every stop and turn...and...you did a great job...BRAVO...!!

  • i love the ostinato @ 1:16

    5-1-8-5-9-5-10

    thanks for sharing !

  • Woah, dude, incredible...

  • Excuse me while I pick my jaw up off the floor!

  • Chris this is wonderful. You must share your talent with the world.

  • It's documented fact that Tatum did ask that question!

  • Chris, you're beautiful! You reinterpret even as you faithfully (I think) transcribe and it swings profoundly. I'm happy to discover you!

  • Art Tatum had perfect pitch. It's a big advantage when transcribing. Besides, Art Tatum was blind and could barely see out of one eye. Hence, he had an heightened sense of aural abilities. Go figure.

  • WOW

  • Oh my god! I think my heart skipped a beat at that 1:27 run, just perfect! Tatum would be proud!

I don't know why all these people are complaining about "mimicking"...people train their whole lives to "mimic" Beethoven or Bach, and it's called high art! Why should Tatum be any different? We need more Tatum interpreters around, he had such a distinctive feel and energy when he played that we need more of!

I look forward to more of your videos in the future!

  • That's because those folks are IGNORANT!

I would like to point out that the players that mastered "stride piano," during that time, were conversant with Classical literature.

    You have to have CHOPS!

  • Amen to that...I think I remember reading that Tatum himself was going to be a classical pianist until he heard Fats Waller or something on the radio and it changed his mind. Vladimir Horowitz was a huge fan of Tatum's too and I think even Rachmaninoff used to go see him play.

  • You're right!

    Ron

  • hows it going mrRon, i havent talked to you in a long time.

  • Just fine... Have a great Holiday!

  • Hey Chris, good job. Taum is the greatest at we what we do. I respect your desire to attain the most profound information of a great tradiion, Don't stop pursuing!!!!!!!!

  • I saw your videos orqsilva, you're not a bad musician, but obviously jealous that you'll never come close to the skills of a much younger musician like chris jordan, which you obviously can't handle. Plus, what kind of musician are you when you take the length of a track a measure for quality. Music lesson 101: faster is not always better.

  • Coool =)

  • Sounds a bit out of tune (the piano, not you) but great performance none the less. :)

  • ...so frickin' mindblowing. God bless you, sir.

  • I've heard Art Tatum play this, and yes it is better. But this is YouTube, not TatumTube. The reason he posted this is the same reason you posted your videos: to show people his stuff. It also seems that plans on publishing this transcription, so it could also be an effective way of advertising.

Don't think that because you use big words that you sound smart or superior, you're just coming across as a pompous asshole. I saw your videos, and I don't feel that you're in a position to criticize.

  • Wow, you're a dick.

Anyway, I like this a lot. Good job! Can you post a link to the music, or something?

  • great job mann! keep it up

  • I like your take on this man!

  • absolutely brilliant!

  • Great stuff, Chris. So glad I found this. Thanks for your brilliant work.

Have you heard Claude Bolling's recording of Tatum's take on Yesterdays? I think it's a great rendition, not entirely unlike yours in style.

  • Not bad! However, if you did a transcription, you should obviously have done a written score of it, right? I agree with contactMW, but I also do understand that jazz is difficult to right, especially for all the glissandos you and Tatum did. Although, good exhibition.

  • i have them all written down. I will get them published by the end of this year.

  • Chris,

Like your video - have you got the notes written down somewhere - if you've got a score transcribed then I PayPal you some money for it? I've bought two Tatum transcription books and they are so rewarding as I have the recordings for a lot of them. You should publish a transcription of this because none is available that I can find. Cheers, Martin

  • It takes a very unique mind to think this way when playing a piece of Tatums work...

  • Very Nice !!

  • wow.

  • Bravo! You are insane good!

  • It only took you 12 hours to transcribe this!!!??? It would take me years to do the same. If it were possible for me

  • Very well wrought homage to the Man.

  • i love this piece so much, how did Art Tatum make his piano sound so jazzy like?

    1:17 starts my favorite part.

  • Enormous!!!

  • Terrific playing Chris. Very refined technique. Looking forward to more.

  • You are a wonderful pianist! Keep up the great work and thank you for helping to keep his memory alive!

  • great playing truly amazing virtuosity, id love to hear some of your own original work if you have any, plz post vids of that, i would be greatful!

  • Bravo! My god you hit every note exactly like the recording, how long have you been playing the piano?

  • That is unbelievable ... wow.

  • wow, how many hours did this take? did you you use a chart? thanks

  • Chris: Terrific! The world needs you! Your technique suggests lots of classical training...top level & cabaret or whatever you decide, I love your playing! I hope you will submit something from the classical arena someday....love to hear more.

  • oh yeaaaaa!!! a whole bunch of stars!:)

  • WOW!!!

  • Chris, my friend Arnold told me to check out your videos and I am just blown away! Wow! you are fabulous -- "Yesterdays" is one of my favorite Tatums and i love what you did with it. All the notes were the same but you played with the temp and gave it your own swing. Absolutely wonderful! You are a true treasure!

  • one of my favorite renditions

    this is freking sweet =)
