This boy does Tatum like very few others, so just don't look at the dude if you lot out there don't like the fact that he is not Tatum, sure sounds like him though and unarguably one of if not the best out there to date that I've heard doing that thang. Moreover a lot of Tatum's work got thrown and here is a guy reviving the legend yet there are those talkers who care criticise. Thanks Chris for showing all of us out there how it should be done.
Loved it, Man. Your work is great. You should hook up with the Art Tatum Jazz Society in Toledo. They'd love you (if they don't know you already.) Bravo!
Thank you For your support everyone. I am moving to NY City for a Month. Come check me out practicing at the Steinway Factory NY... dates to be decided...
Hey man great job. Don't let years of practice go to waist over a stupid comment on youtube. Clearly you've been playing longer than the youtube hate club foundation existed. You are one of the definitions of a gifted musician.
i have just started jazz piano and i am 13, i love this style of music and i was thinking because i am willing to practice many hours a day (like 8 hours during the summer) but do you think it is too late too reach this standard or am i just being pointlessly negative?
only one way to find out right? Either way if you practice for that long you're going to be fking awesome! I started the same age as you and one of my biggest regrets is not giving piano my all when I had the time to do it... I say go for it.
Art Tatum had perfect pitch. It's a big advantage when transcribing. Besides, Art Tatum was blind and could barely see out of one eye. Hence, he had an heightened sense of aural abilities. Go figure.
Oh my god! I think my heart skipped a beat at that 1:27 run, just perfect! Tatum would be proud!
I don't know why all these people are complaining about "mimicking"...people train their whole lives to "mimic" Beethoven or Bach, and it's called high art! Why should Tatum be any different? We need more Tatum interpreters around, he had such a distinctive feel and energy when he played that we need more of!
I look forward to more of your videos in the future!
Amen to that...I think I remember reading that Tatum himself was going to be a classical pianist until he heard Fats Waller or something on the radio and it changed his mind. Vladimir Horowitz was a huge fan of Tatum's too and I think even Rachmaninoff used to go see him play.
Hey Chris, good job. Taum is the greatest at we what we do. I respect your desire to attain the most profound information of a great tradiion, Don't stop pursuing!!!!!!!!
I saw your videos orqsilva, you're not a bad musician, but obviously jealous that you'll never come close to the skills of a much younger musician like chris jordan, which you obviously can't handle. Plus, what kind of musician are you when you take the length of a track a measure for quality. Music lesson 101: faster is not always better.
I've heard Art Tatum play this, and yes it is better. But this is YouTube, not TatumTube. The reason he posted this is the same reason you posted your videos: to show people his stuff. It also seems that plans on publishing this transcription, so it could also be an effective way of advertising.
Don't think that because you use big words that you sound smart or superior, you're just coming across as a pompous asshole. I saw your videos, and I don't feel that you're in a position to criticize.
Not bad! However, if you did a transcription, you should obviously have done a written score of it, right? I agree with contactMW, but I also do understand that jazz is difficult to right, especially for all the glissandos you and Tatum did. Although, good exhibition.
Like your video - have you got the notes written down somewhere - if you've got a score transcribed then I PayPal you some money for it? I've bought two Tatum transcription books and they are so rewarding as I have the recordings for a lot of them. You should publish a transcription of this because none is available that I can find. Cheers, Martin
Chris: Terrific! The world needs you! Your technique suggests lots of classical training...top level & cabaret or whatever you decide, I love your playing! I hope you will submit something from the classical arena someday....love to hear more.
Chris, my friend Arnold told me to check out your videos and I am just blown away! Wow! you are fabulous -- "Yesterdays" is one of my favorite Tatums and i love what you did with it. All the notes were the same but you played with the temp and gave it your own swing. Absolutely wonderful! You are a true treasure!
Speechless. Awesome rendition.

That's because those folks are IGNORANT!
I would like to point out that the players that mastered "stride piano," during that time, were conversant with Classical literature.
You have to have CHOPS!

Have you heard Claude Bolling's recording of Tatum's take on Yesterdays? I think it's a great rendition, not entirely unlike yours in style.
