I'm 44 now and used to listen to this obsessively when I was 15; to this day I have the fantasy of "pushing right through" asking the D.J. to dump the 4/4 thump-thump and put this on and dance with my boyfriend - maybe the only couple - maybe not - on the floor while those who can't stand a slow dance drift away and walk out.
One of the best songs written. That line, so poignant - "and I get tired of DJs, Why is it always what he plays" - You can picture the man trying to get up the nerve to get close to his love - perhaps they've fought, and that one song can be the one that brings them together again - but the DJ won't play it. He needs that slow song, and he needs it now

i totally agree "jetfit". JJ is an awesome artist. The only reason he's not as popular as Billy and Elton is because he's a hybrid punk/jazz player. He makes serious music while the others make "musak" and the 3:00 minute songs. I saw him live 20 years ago at Jones Beach during a serious storm and JJ put on a performance i will never forget. JJ is great.
This particular video, without images, has the best sound of those available. My own particular favourite recording is on the double live album, and JJ's notes about performing it are fantastic.
Mr. Jackson seems to ask the questions in the back of my head in the wee hours. What is my place in the world? Why do I do what I do? Why is that girl wearing that outfit (as in is she trying to show me she's pretty, or is she trying to acknowledge her so she can be upset at me) . . . which is a bad way of saying he seems to ask the background questions often left unasked. I think basic morality and decorum are at forefront of all his music, from Geraldine and John, to One to One to . . . .
This song always makes me wonder how it is that Joe Jackson was not as popular as any of the so-called great solo artists (Elton John, Billy Joel, etc,). I'll take JJ over those guys every time.
This song makes me feel so sad, it reminds me of the love of my life, the one that I let get away. I remember slow dancing with him, in the kitchen, at 2am, after a night of laughing, talking, and eating ice cream. I always remember that feeling of love when I hear this song.
I saw him live under the Red Rocks in CO. He is incomparable. You have to love an artist who gives everything to his muse. He leaves nothing on the stage. He gives every bit of his soul to the music, there will never be a critique from my lips for an artist who gives SO much. Joe is, was and always shall be magic.
This is one of my Favourites of Joe`s songs, the best version i think is the Live Version from the album "Steppin Out The Very Best Of Joe Jackson" british version,
There isn't one decent version of this great song on the net! What's goin on? The version on the double recorded in Austrailia/w best sax solo EVER should be posted...c'mon people!!!!
From Wikipedia...Jackson's 1982 album Night and Day paid tribute to the wit and style of Cole Porter (and indirectly to New York City).[citation needed] Night and Day was Jackson's only album to reach the Top 10, peaking at #4, and the cuts "Steppin' Out" and "Breaking Us In Two" were chart hits. The tracks "Real Men" and "A Slow Song" have pointed obliquely to the city's early 80s gay culture.
