@SolidShroom notice though how frank was using his pick to tap, and not actually using his fingertip. notice how this little difference gives the notes a sharper bite. technique makes all the difference.
@OceanSong917 Great to hear you have appreciation for real art in music :) If you are ever interested in new stuff, take a look at my page. I have hundreds of songs by artists that are generally not known by the mainstream. No fluff, just substance :)
Mike was actually a pretty hip guy, he had a lot of fusion greats on his show over the years, and he knew stellar musicianship when he heard it, no matter what stripe.
Frank had limited guitar skills, but he used what he had with utmost dare and confidence. When the dust settles, he will be remembered as one of the greatest music composers and guitarists of the 20th century.
Zappa was a true genius who actually had most all of his music charted, not just improvised! Yes, all that wild-assed stuff was on sheet music. You really had to be a competent technical artist to hang with Frank, and he demanded perfection. In a head space of his own, with a keen social and hilarious outlook on life, especially in the surrealistic 1960s L.A. environment, Frank blazed a trail few but the intellectually twisted could appreciate. Only Hendrix could riff as fast and good as FZ.
Is this the Mike Douglas House Band playing behind Frank ? Nice job .. can't believe they sounds so good if it is . This is one of my favorite Zappa tunes . I have fond memories of seeing Zappa play live almost every Holloween in the NYC area
Hey all of you Zappa persons, I wanna say hello to you as I felt like almost the only one who appreciates his music before the days of internet. Not only that I can watch so many things he has done on youtube now, but I also realize there are lots of people with a taste for the bizarre. And yes, he is one of the people who made me wanna play guitar and I will play his tunes in honour of his genius.
When it comes to zappa, I feel safe to say that, musically, it doesn't get any better, he only did the rock thing for people who think music is a singer, guitar, drums and a bass player. Anything that is weird or isn't understood is passed off as "crap"?! "Without deviation from the norm progress is not possible". I feel bad for everyone who doesn't understand his music. And his guitar playing, it can be looked at just like his music, its the best it gets when you understand it.
@loislombardo No relation to the actor, Michael Douglas. Mike Douglas was a very popular talk show host in the afternoons. He was Oprah, before Oprah (Kinda. More of a variety/talk show. No book promoting, car keys under seats, and less estrogen.)...Michael Douglas' father is Kirk Douglas.; A huge movie star of the 40's, 50's 60's...Most notably for his role as Spartacus...(More information than you bargained for, huh?)
@cheezer57 Also, Mike Douglas wasn't afraid to put non-mainstream or even somewhat controversial musicians on his show. He even had John Lennon and Yoko Ono co-host the show for a whole week. Like Zappa, Mike Douglas doesn't get enough credit for what he pioneered.
This is why I keep telling my Strat playing friend he NEEDS a Gibson SG for his next guitar. I was 16 when this aired. TY for the memories and the post.

@exodyssey 1st heard him around the Hot Rats era....instant convert....good music without too many lyrics so I thought...then I heard Billy the Mountain....the rest is a missed coupla trees
I remember when I saw this as a wee lad. I loved it! No one was doing this, especially on TV. There was no MTV, no Eddie, no Yngwie, no Vai. What was tapping?
Frank took music to places that it had never gone before and, quite frankly, it may not have been designed to reach. But he did it.
Historical perspective: Back then we had a dead Jimi, Santana, Page, Beck DiMeola & some other jazz-rock guys. But this was special. Just because...remember, the reason U started playing in the 1st place?
@xerosisonek Ok, ok, I get it, I like 70's rock and not metal so much.
My comment may not make sense but I'll explain it. I've been having an internal struggle about doing what I want to do, and doing what other people feel is technically superior, and now, I just want to do what I want to do. Thanks for the advice. Peace.
@xerosisonek, you are so so right, especially when you say, "what was tapping, etc." As I watched this, digging the intensity of Frank's playing on a pop tv show, I began to focus on and remember what an astounding guitar player he was. As the camera astutely zoomed in on his fingerboard I also realized that Steve Vai must've picked up on tapping from Frank, not Joe Satch.
@xerosisonek People were tapping long before Zappa. Eddie was playing in clubs at this time and was tapping before then. Page tapped, and influenced EVH. Even some older bluesmen threw in some hammer-ons now and then (if they weren't on the bottleneck). Tapping is even evident on classical compositions for stringed instruments, like violins.
Thanks, mate. I found out later that others were tapping, but Zappa was the first one I ever SAW tapping. I remember seeing Les Paul tapping too, but I had no idea what he was doing. I didn't know Page tapped. Thanks for the info. Cheers
You folks go too far. I don't care if it's difficult or not. It sounds great, yet simplified for the backing band which is not a Frank's lineup, but still really rockus, at least to me. Tomorrow is His birthday and I'll publish to tribute Him. Ranz
I just bought this actual recording on itunes. There's something really cool about the band' arrangements and the 'square' setting of the chat show. Even though the sound quality isn't great, his solo is so soulful!
If you guys like the tone on this video, you can seriously get it straight out the box with a 70's Pignose, one of the made in U.S ones (the later reissues don't sound the same). Check my videos, I done a techn demo of one.
I love listening to him. I bought tinseltown rebellion when I was eleven and it totally corrupted me. I listened to that cassette constantly on my Sony single-speaker radiocassette player and memorized it entirely. Most musicians think they're being irreverent by just making a bunch of noise and screaming, but Frank did it with sweet melodies and compositions, and a style of playing that came straight out of him. It's like the guitar isn't even there.
Hopefully the Internet will help change the way (good) musicians get their stuff out.
But too many "musicians" are just posting a lot garbage because they have not taken the time or effort to master their instrument. Anyone today can "make music" with todays technology, but few really know what they are doing.
In answer to Gary, I agree with how diluted things can get. A lot of what would have been 'big name' artists seem to be getting lost in the sea of bands online. But then again with liberty from the big record company machines comes the responsibility to do our own research and make choices. Success boils down to being undeniably good at what you do.
I totally agree, it sounds like they were having a blast. Probably the most interesting thing they have played in their lives on that show. Maybe Frank got inspired by the fact of having that kind of big band backing on that very night and thought WAIT A MINUTE...I think that;s why the recording is an interesting artifact
I really don't think a single guitar player can be acknowledged with the discovery of one single technique, since the posibilities of someone else doing the same thing in another part of the world at the same time are huge, specially on the 70' ... BUT, I firmly believe Frank used it FIRST as part of a coherent composition and not part of a live solo...
I dont think the people in the audience in 1976 knew what genius they were listening to

By the way, thanks bigdavej69 for posting this, and with the date, too! Now I know how old I was when I saw it. So cool.

@xerosisonek The music, amirite?

Right, because you loved it and you HAD to do it or your heart wouldn't let you rest.

Anyway, this performance is fucking tight.

@TampaRed

Yes, Back then when TV and Music were still good.
Christ, I can't even turn on the TV today without vomiting.
And Music? Where are the music stations on the Radio?
Sad thing is that people with unique talent are not going to ever get heard in todays evil corporate money machine environment.

LOL, . . how?

Hopefully the Internet will help change the way (good) musicians get their stuff out.
But too many "musicians" are just posting a lot garbage because they have not taken the time or effort to master their instrument. Anyone today can "make music" with todays technology, but few really know what they are doing.

That's taking things a bit too far

good answer, . . I didn't realize that was a response to an earlier post.
Sounds like a response Frank would have made, lol.

You gotta hand it to Mike's Orchestra--a bunch of middle-aged Big Band and Swing veterans I assume--for doing such a good job on this.
