  • I dont think the people in the audience in 1976 knew what genius they were listening to

  • love this one, great sound...

  • I bought this version of black napkins on amazon for 99cents n now play it everyday in the monrning when I wake up

  • LOVES

  • HAPPY BIRTHDAY, FRANK! Thanks for all the great music.

  • is he using a quarter for a pick?

  • @fridun007 Its a metal pick. Zappa used them pretty often. You can see one on the "does humor belong in music" dvd too.

  • Zappa on Mike Douglas? Who'da thunk it?

  • I had no idea he was a guest on Mike Douglas' show. Amazing recording. Like other fans, I too miss perhaps the best guitarist of our time. I only got to see him in concert a few time but remember each one vividly even today.

  • I so love my Zappa in the evening.........

  • and how bout that little pignose amp he is plugged into?

  • wow, zappa truly understood and felt the blues, there is soul in every note.

  • I remembered this on tv aand I was thinking only 3 days left before the felt forum halloween concert!!

  • Frank Zappa dying was such a loss and sad thing to me, I felt a personal loss since I loved his music and his reasoning.

  • my girlfriend said frank zappa was ugly now you can find her tits on amazon

  • @muffinfucker226 but that doesn't make you unique...

  • @muffinfucker226 Got a link I can use to find these "tits"?

  • this is the first time ive seen him perform black napkins with his sg guitar, ive only seen him play it on the stratocaster, his SG has the sickest tone ever so bad ass, so glad my dad introduced me to zappa when i was 16 imm 22 now and have zappa tattoos hes absolutely a brilliant musician

  • a personal fav.

    thanks for posting it!

  • Thanks to ZPZ, I have been getting back into FZ's stuff from the early 70's. Really great material!

  • 0:17

    Is that his dick?

  • that little variation from 3:34 - 3:40 just oozes typical FZ genius

  • @OceanSong917

I got into FZ when I was 14...

  • Zappa mastered tapping before Van Halen even came along haha.

  • @SolidShroom notice though how frank was using his pick to tap, and not actually using his fingertip. notice how this little difference gives the notes a sharper bite. technique makes all the difference.

  • These Guys from The Rolling Stone Magazine placed Frank Zappa on position 39

of the greatest Guitarists of ALL TIMES well i guess they didnt see this video

He should be at least in the twenties somewhere,

Well what can a Fan Do : ( I can only be a Fan well at least i am not alone : )

  • it just doesn't last long enough

  • @OceanSong917 Great to hear you have appreciation for real art in music :) If you are ever interested in new stuff, take a look at my page. I have hundreds of songs by artists that are generally not known by the mainstream. No fluff, just substance :)

  • @Zappafan1980 I completley agree.

  • This is Historic. . . What a total class act to pull this off on Mike Douglas

  • Tapping?! 2:45- 3.00 Years before Van Halen made it famous!

  • @granaff

The important thing is that Frank Zappas tapping is beautiful and tastful

    and not just Fast

But Eddie Van Halen is really good he heavyly influenced Paul Gilbert and Steve Vai

  • Incredible...

  • This is the most wholesome blues I ever heard Zappa play. If you dont feel this in your heart, you have no soul.

  • if i could only have 1 zappa song for life, this is it

  • this song is absolutely awesome

  • Mike was actually a pretty hip guy, he had a lot of fusion greats on his show over the years, and he knew stellar musicianship when he heard it, no matter what stripe.

  • My God i love this version of this song 3 x more then the Zoot Allures version

    I wish Frank recorded it

so i could listen to it once in a while before i go to Sleep

Oh and much respect to the Mike Douglas Orchestra there doing a great job

  • I think the lowfi sounds makes this song even better.

  • Genius! Don't need to say any more.

  • wow

  • 3 words.. just totally sublime......

  • classic performance from a master

  • "I lay awake nights,

    Sayin' 'Thank you" Frankie...

    :-)

  • The King of Anarchy never stop. Love You Zappa.

  • The "Problem" with Zappa is that you either think he was the greatest or you just don´t like him. There´s nothing in between.

Zappa is for people who appreciate good music...for everyone else there´s still Lady Gaga and Kenny G to listen to :)

  • @kirwelouis

Actually and especially in this 21st century it's more like, lack of knowing Frank Zappa because of video games

  • @Rajhoul

I think his music is just too complex for most of todays people. Well...could still be a result

    of too much videogameing :)

  • Frank had limited guitar skills, but he used what he had with utmost dare and confidence. When the dust settles, he will be remembered as one of the greatest music composers and guitarists of the 20th century.

  • The mike douglas show ,mike was the man....FZ one of the 100 greatest guitar solos ...frank thank you you are missed

  • Zappa was a true genius who actually had most all of his music charted, not just improvised! Yes, all that wild-assed stuff was on sheet music. You really had to be a competent technical artist to hang with Frank, and he demanded perfection. In a head space of his own, with a keen social and hilarious outlook on life, especially in the surrealistic 1960s L.A. environment, Frank blazed a trail few but the intellectually twisted could appreciate. Only Hendrix could riff as fast and good as FZ.

  • @OceanSong917 your so right

  • In Frank we trust

  • Great sound to this version

  • This is awesome! I saw him in 77. 78. '80 at the Fox in Atlanta! Who knows, I might me moving to Montana soon... a Pignose tiny amp! C'mon!

  • This is awesome! I saw him in 77. 78. '80 at the Fox in Atlanta! Who knows, I might me moving to Montana soon...

  • I love where he says " I have to turn on the GIANT AMPLIFER " lmaooo

  • Is this the Mike Douglas House Band playing behind Frank ? Nice job .. can't believe they sounds so good if it is . This is one of my favorite Zappa tunes . I have fond memories of seeing Zappa play live almost every Holloween in the NYC area

  • Hey all of you Zappa persons, I wanna say hello to you as I felt like almost the only one who appreciates his music before the days of internet. Not only that I can watch so many things he has done on youtube now, but I also realize there are lots of people with a taste for the bizarre. And yes, he is one of the people who made me wanna play guitar and I will play his tunes in honour of his genius.

  • When it comes to zappa, I feel safe to say that, musically, it doesn't get any better, he only did the rock thing for people who think music is a singer, guitar, drums and a bass player. Anything that is weird or isn't understood is passed off as "crap"?! "Without deviation from the norm progress is not possible". I feel bad for everyone who doesn't understand his music. And his guitar playing, it can be looked at just like his music, its the best it gets when you understand it.

  • Just amazing !!...Frank was and still is a gift from _ _ _ I don't know..but what a gift he has left us in his music and his son Dweezil !!

  • Wow...one of the best versions I've heard/seen.....

  • im wondering is this mike dugles michel dugles the actors dad

  • @loislombardo No relation to the actor, Michael Douglas. Mike Douglas was a very popular talk show host in the afternoons. He was Oprah, before Oprah (Kinda. More of a variety/talk show. No book promoting, car keys under seats, and less estrogen.)...Michael Douglas' father is Kirk Douglas.; A huge movie star of the 40's, 50's 60's...Most notably for his role as Spartacus...(More information than you bargained for, huh?)

  • @cheezer57 thanks for the info, less estrogen lol i have a wife thank god yhis is oprahs last year.o my god another year.

  • @cheezer57 Also, Mike Douglas wasn't afraid to put non-mainstream or even somewhat controversial musicians on his show. He even had John Lennon and Yoko Ono co-host the show for a whole week. Like Zappa, Mike Douglas doesn't get enough credit for what he pioneered.

  • I can't help but notice how much the "E" in that sideways "MIKE" on the wall behind Frank looks like Zappa's own moustache/soul patch, haha :)

  • @JSHaivas it looks like the logo for toyota trucks

  • Such a loss to this world, turn your eyes off. Just listen to the music, through a 4 pound :Pignose: amp!

  • I LOVE IT! THX so much! Regards from Germany!

  • This is why I keep telling my Strat playing friend he NEEDS a Gibson SG for his next guitar. I was 16 when this aired. TY for the memories and the post.

  • @DonFormica the strat has its place too though

  • Frank is so entertaining. Every time I get to listening to his stuff I end up spending a few hours with him.

  • the best ever

  • ese swin de trompeta es simplemente genial, le otorga a la cancion un toque de nostalgia bastante relajante, jaja,Zappa es la neta del planeta!!

  • u o de los mejores solos de el gran maestro Zappa, toda una delicia,

  • Seen this performance before, but this is fantastic quality. Thanks for posting, great stuff.

  • Unusual - I guess is the intention since he's playing with a studio band - especially one such as The Mike Douglas Orchestra - However ! Frank was very good at the unusual . We miss the man . I Wonder what imitation mayonaise / Cheese product - pseudo intellectual gave this song a thumb down . ukkfayyookay ? Well maybe it's yoooooooou . Your folks ground you but still let you go on YouTube !

  • "very unique performance"? How many different degrees of "unique" are there, since "unique" means one-of-a-kind?

  • Love this vid. One of my favourite Zappa songs and sounds so good with the orchestra.

  • If you're serious about playing guitar, FZ is compulsory listening. Brilliant Gibson tone as well, classic.

  • thanks for the music Frank!

  • its like a converstation..

  • I use to rush home from school to watch the Mike Douglas Show for this very reason. He would book acts that other shows were afraid of. He showed great respect for them as well

  • man this tune goes deep

  • I wonder if Jeff Beck is a fan of this song?

  • @insipid maybe but slash is haha slash sucks

  • He's playing through a Pignose folks, the little portable one. Can you believe that? Just proves tone comes from the fingers, brain and heart.

    R.I.P. Frank!

  • Zappa is God

  • I'm happy that I saw this man live.

  • one of my favrite vershins its inposible to have a fav ant it its sencless lol

  • yo tommy frank can jam hu kicks ass

  • You should not qualify the word unique. I know what you mean though.

  • Amazing quality

  • I really like the Mike Douglas show.. I was a tiny kid.. and my parents were quite conservative and we often would go without a TV.. but I remember two things from the 70s on TV Bugs Bunny and Mike Douglas. Always interesting shows. (Well, some Smothers Brothers b4 my parents would blow up). FZ is my favorite. Always has been since I first heard him in college in 1986. Have all his stuff. Can't figure out why he wasn't more popular. But he was there, all the time, being ignored.

  • rare and XLNT quality video Thanks

  • I love this song, not many guitar players can be mistaken for in my opinion, one of the greatest, if not THE greatest guitraist of ALL TIME!!!, and thats Jimmy Page=)

  • @BlackPyramid67 I Love Jimmy ! I Love Led Zep ! So Much Musuc Could Not Have Been Great Without Jimmy Page ! HOWEVER - Ask HIM ! - Ask Any Other Guitar Player - Any Musician - D J (not spinner crap) Music Producer/Engineer --- Jimmy Plays What He Plays Fantastic ! He Is A Sloppy Guitar Player . Zappa Could Play What Page Has Always Played But There Are Only A Few Zappa Songs That Jimmy Could Play ! No Shit ! Think About It !

  • One of my all time favorite songs, and a fresh performance to it, awesome!

  • I had the idea to open up this song in two windows and play it at the same exact time and it sounds so bad ass!

  • My guess this is possibly around the time when Frank became aware of Eddie Van Halen's thing. Dweezil talked about being a young kid and sitting in the Zappa living room with Frank, Vai and Edward with their guitars ...watching and learning.

  • @Composer19691 You guessed wrong. This is way before Van Halen was famous.

  • @deadforever Yeah, I just noticed the year.

  • Never seen Frank do hammer-ons like that. Very atypical. Cool performance

  • Going to see Zappa Plays Zappa for the 4th time this Sunday.... ZPZ is the one time "the next best thing" is essentially just as good.

  • I was an 18yo seaman in the USN somewhere in the south pacific. I would have loved to have seen this then. I imagine my mother back home folding the day's laundry and wondering who this hippy was...

  • WE Can't Get Enaugh of Frank Zappa !

  • stop noddling and shut up and play lol

  • Mike Douglas Orch's bass player is PRETTY HIP

  • Ehrlicher Mensch

  • Mike Douglas one of the only talk show guys who could actually form a sentence FZ very happy to go to Philly nto do this..we talked about it afterwards...

  • this is so beautiful that I get tears in my eyes ... need a napkin

  • HUGE TALENT!

  • zappa knows how to do it,hes the best

  • What a player, what a guitar!

  • I love those first two harmonics and following notes he plays before the melody. Exquisite!

  • priceless

  • Franks playing is like no other!!

  • The Mike Douglas show....wow....

  • sanpeeps, my brother/sister - this actually does rule...Frank was a great American composer and musician. It's our job to make sure that as many people as possible are exposed to Frank's music. SPREAD THE WORD!

  • If anyone's interested, this version can be found on iTunes. I found it there and was oh so happy!

  • One of the most enjoyable 4:27 I've spent in a long time.

  • I watched this on TV.

  • Princess DEWEK!

  • finally a clean video version of this. Beautiful

  • holy f*k, best evar

  • v nice upload for FZ fans. one of the Zoot Allures highlights and an utterly unique rendition of it.

    thx

  • I like his tone hear... A LOT!

  • exod you should develop new friends, the interview before the performance is really good too !

  • this fuckin' rules!

  • Im a Zappa fan, and im really proud of it.

Not many i know like Zappa's music, i feel honored i can listend to this.

    Thank You Frank, Thank you!

  • @exodyssey me too

  • @exodyssey 1st heard him around the Hot Rats era....instant convert....good music without too many lyrics so I thought...then I heard Billy the Mountain....the rest is a missed coupla trees

  • @exodyssey the ones that dont like it well they never lisend

  • By the way, thanks bigdavej69 for posting this, and with the date, too! Now I know how old I was when I saw it. So cool.

  • I remember when I saw this as a wee lad. I loved it! No one was doing this, especially on TV. There was no MTV, no Eddie, no Yngwie, no Vai. What was tapping?

Frank took music to places that it had never gone before and, quite frankly, it may not have been designed to reach. But he did it.

Historical perspective: Back then we had a dead Jimi, Santana, Page, Beck DiMeola & some other jazz-rock guys. But this was special. Just because...remember, the reason U started playing in the 1st place?

  • @xerosisonek The music, amirite?

  • @xXNeoShredderXx

Right, because you loved it and you HAD to do it or your heart wouldn't let you rest.

  • @xerosisonek Ok, ok, I get it, I like 70's rock and not metal so much.

My comment may not make sense but I'll explain it. I've been having an internal struggle about doing what I want to do, and doing what other people feel is technically superior, and now, I just want to do what I want to do. Thanks for the advice. Peace.

  • @xerosisonek, you are so so right, especially when you say, "what was tapping, etc." As I watched this, digging the intensity of Frank's playing on a pop tv show, I began to focus on and remember what an astounding guitar player he was. As the camera astutely zoomed in on his fingerboard I also realized that Steve Vai must've picked up on tapping from Frank, not Joe Satch.

  • @xerosisonek People were tapping long before Zappa. Eddie was playing in clubs at this time and was tapping before then. Page tapped, and influenced EVH. Even some older bluesmen threw in some hammer-ons now and then (if they weren't on the bottleneck). Tapping is even evident on classical compositions for stringed instruments, like violins.

Anyway, this performance is fucking tight.

  • @TampaRed

Thanks, mate. I found out later that others were tapping, but Zappa was the first one I ever SAW tapping. I remember seeing Les Paul tapping too, but I had no idea what he was doing. I didn't know Page tapped. Thanks for the info. Cheers

  • @xerosisonek Sure thing.

  • @xerosisonek

Frank is ONLY position 39 on the Most Influential Guitarists

of all Time at Rolling Stone Magazine Top 100

But i dont Care hes my Guitar Hero he inflenced So many

Mike Keneally. Steve Vai, Mattias Eklundh (also on their Music)

You forgot to mention Ritchie Blackmoore

Frank Zappa Really took the Time and tried to make Sounds

no one did before his playing from 1976 to 1979

    was experimental stuff

  • @xerosisonek yeah man in mah case it was zappa and jimi at first

  • You folks go too far. I don't care if it's difficult or not. It sounds great, yet simplified for the backing band which is not a Frank's lineup, but still really rockus, at least to me. Tomorrow is His birthday and I'll publish to tribute Him. Ranz

  • I just bought this actual recording on itunes. There's something really cool about the band' arrangements and the 'square' setting of the chat show. Even though the sound quality isn't great, his solo is so soulful!

    RIP FZ

  • Yes, Back then when TV and Music were still good.

Christ, I can't even turn on the TV today without vomiting.

And Music? Where are the music stations on the Radio?

Sad thing is that people with unique talent are not going to ever get heard in todays evil corporate money machine environment.

  • If you guys like the tone on this video, you can seriously get it straight out the box with a 70's Pignose, one of the made in U.S ones (the later reissues don't sound the same). Check my videos, I done a techn demo of one.

  • STOP SELLING you corporate hoe

  • Frank Rules fan since 6 th grade in 78...

  • I love listening to him. I bought tinseltown rebellion when I was eleven and it totally corrupted me. I listened to that cassette constantly on my Sony single-speaker radiocassette player and memorized it entirely. Most musicians think they're being irreverent by just making a bunch of noise and screaming, but Frank did it with sweet melodies and compositions, and a style of playing that came straight out of him. It's like the guitar isn't even there.

  • >> I bought tinseltown rebellion when I was eleven and it totally corrupted me.

    LOL, . . how?

  • - from becoming the moronic consumer drone the political media and entertainment industry does its absolute best to make us into.

  • Hopefully the Internet will help change the way (good) musicians get their stuff out.

But too many "musicians" are just posting a lot garbage because they have not taken the time or effort to master their instrument. Anyone today can "make music" with todays technology, but few really know what they are doing.

  • That's taking things a bit too far

  • good answer, . . I didn't realize that was a response to an earlier post.

Sounds like a response Frank would have made, lol.

  • Oddly I bought that album when I was about 13 it totally blew me away particularly the 'panty quilt'

  • voodoo butter underwear (jayzusss!)

In answer to Gary, I agree with how diluted things can get. A lot of what would have been 'big name' artists seem to be getting lost in the sea of bands online. But then again with liberty from the big record company machines comes the responsibility to do our own research and make choices. Success boils down to being undeniably good at what you do.

  • he never got enough credit for the way he played....RIP FZ

  • Exquisito solo de Frank, sin duda el mejor!!!

  • fudido!

  • This unique video with Frank makes me pick up my guitar immediately. The man had Tone!

  • SOUL

  • No way that's the Mike Douglas Orchestra in the background!

    Franks is awesome as always!

  • You gotta hand it to Mike's Orchestra--a bunch of middle-aged Big Band and Swing veterans I assume--for doing such a good job on this.

  • I totally agree, it sounds like they were having a blast. Probably the most interesting thing they have played in their lives on that show. Maybe Frank got inspired by the fact of having that kind of big band backing on that very night and thought WAIT A MINUTE...I think that;s why the recording is an interesting artifact

  • Comment removed

  • I really don't think a single guitar player can be acknowledged with the discovery of one single technique, since the posibilities of someone else doing the same thing in another part of the world at the same time are huge, specially on the 70' ... BUT, I firmly believe Frank used it FIRST as part of a coherent composition and not part of a live solo...

  • That one was a custom handmade SG copy done by a fan who gave it to him as a gift. As who he was, I have no idea... but what a great fan huh...
