People wonder "where have all the good bands gone", "why is there no good music?". The answer is that there is no money in making music and there is no return for investments made by music producers. File sharing, YouTube, etc has eliminated profits for real musicians. The only way to make money is via clothing lines, perfume, etc. No one is going to buy a modern day Jimi Hendrix cologne or a modern day Metallica's underwear.
@This19 the term "good music" is highly subjective. It has been the incompetence of the music industry to adapt to changing technologies that ruined said industry. It is now easy and cheap to get quality hardware/software to create music and with the advent of the Internet, also easy to distribute the music. 1. Artists started going independent

I use the internet to find and discover bands. I am all about supporting my artists. It is hard to find my music in some places. Like wal-mart or best buy may not have some metal bands that I have found and my only means of purchasing is internet. But I use bit torrents to find and download albums of bands I wanna learn or hear about and I find some good ones and when the opportunity arises I will buy the album I have downloaded to support them.

As for career as far as i know musicians make pretty decent money for gigs - a friend of mine plays in a jazz band for like 2 months and they pay him 800 a night (in Latvia (my home country) its a lot)!

a) there is some music that you cant find in local music stores. And paying Amazon or some other third party $50 shipment costs is just plain stupid (when we (meaning Latvia) was a part of soviet union 20(or whatever it was called) years ago copying records was the only way to get good music cus you couldnt get it in stores - not trying to be sentimental or anything here).
b) its cool that i can check out songs before i buy CD (its like trying on pants before buying them). If i like the songs i want to buy record even more because usually nowadays artists put a little extras on their albums like "making ofs".
Finally, let me ask you this - you make a record. Isnt that great people are listening to it in the first place? And if you release a cool CD people WILL buy it even if songs are on the net.
When someone i know release an album i buy it, not to show my loality, but because its good stuff and everytime they hear it on my mp3 player they dont go like "where did you get this?" they are proud because something they've created has found a way to people and inspires others.

I use the internet to find and discover bands. I am all about supporting my artists. It is hard to find my music in some places. Like wal-mart or best buy may not have some metal bands that I have found and my only means of purchasing is internet. But I use bit torrents to find and download albums of bands I wanna learn or hear about and I find some good ones and when the opportunity arises I will buy the album I have downloaded to support them.

point is the record/music industry has been ripping the fans off for more than a decade. CD's came along with better sound but people were doing tapes for their friends long before Napster. Here's the thing-with cds- costs when drastically down and the price went up to $15-20. Napster (and others like napster) prove the economy does not support the price they wanted. Poeple didn't want to pay that much-boom-here is an alternative. Now "bands" think its ok to charge $100+ for a concert

ok... so me, I make movies that are shared on internet and nobody pays, I pay my rent working in IT - its just the way it is. For me its about sharing ideas not about money. That doesnt mean that its wrong to make money with it if you find a way (CD's it seems wont be one of them for long). Of course we could go the other way too, make everyone pay for every time they hear the song, right? Like write a check every time you walk out of Store to pay up for the songs you heard on their radio.

as long as the respective artist is paid. i mean even before the music indusrty musicians could live off of playing songs. now days clubs pay 400 average and thats split between 5 people and with gas prices we're lucky to break even, so now its getting to the point where its just not worth it to play clubs or even partys around my hometown. and half of my fans have a bootleg cd that they copied from a "friend". i mean really you cant spare five bucks for years worth of work?

As for career as far as i know musicians make pretty decent money for gigs - a friend of mine plays in a jazz band for like 2 months and they pay him 800 a night (in Latvia (my home country) its a lot)!
Of course i understand why musicians who used to spend 3 weeks in studio to record 12 songs and then got paid billions are upset because this doesnt work anymore.

1) I do buy records, ok?
2) I do download records...for several reasons:
a) there is some music that you cant find in local music stores. And paying Amazon or some other third party $50 shipment costs is just plain stupid (when we (meaning Latvia) was a part of soviet union 20(or whatever it was called) years ago copying records was the only way to get good music cus you couldnt get it in stores - not trying to be sentimental or anything here).
