ALRIGHT to all you people who ont know this song was written by tchaikovsky a russian dude. we just use in america to shoot cannons off to but probably because of the war of 1812 as well
It really is ironic that so many Americans associate this piece with the War of 1812 (a stalemate) and the Fourth of July, not least because it actually commemorates the Russian victory over Napoleon, but also because it became associated with the Fourth of July at a time of heightened tension with the Soviet Union as the US was losing the Vietnam War and therefore losing ground to the communists. Only in America.
@SmoothCriminalAaron yea a little. but it's good, it's patriotic, and it's got a cannon volley.. what more can you ask for! i guess the Americans started playing it before the whole communism thing, when russia was imperial
No no no, you see, the song was first played in New York in the 1800's but... The song did not become popular till a preformance in 1974 in Boston. In the heat of the Cold War, but your point still applys sine Tchaikovsky never saw the rise of Red.
@Vel1al I didn't know that either! You see, the last successful invasion of American soil was by the British in 1814, which in modern day usage, is part of the War of 1812. And because American eventually sent the Limey Redcoats packing, we as Americans think well of that time, so when we here the 1812 Overture, we're thinking it was for us. I didn't know it was a Russian celebrating a victory of Russia, but hey, good on the Russians too:-).
While great, I think it's amusing that the 1812 Overture is played so frequently on the 4th of July, considering it has the French national anthem embedded in it.
well it doesn't have anything to do with America at all, it isn't even about our war of 1812. Although having the French anthem in it isn't too out of place since they played a big role in securing our Independence form Great Britain.
Artillery cannons are part of the 1812 overture, which is a big part of the 4th in Boston. That said whether in person or on TV I still get chills every year for Stars and Stripes Forever which is JPS and BPO at their best
The 4th of July in Boston is the best celebration anywhere! Every year that I have been there, it has been awesome. It is the biggest, and most tame crowd that I have ever seen in my life. BOSTON RULES!!!!!
I wanted Napoleon to win. Oh well, I think I'll be okay. lol
