Same thing happened with one of my hamsters when I put her on the dinner table to annoy my mom, and she jumped into a cup of warm water. When I took her out, she just jumped back in. >.<
People do realize that anything and even humans don't look their best when they are all wet, right? I wouldn't be surprised if they looked "distraught". Even dogs look like that. Birds, you name it.
Most, if not all, cats like water. They just don't like to be forced into it. Given a bath, eating, playing, being held... cats don't like anything unless it's on their own terms. They're not dogs.
Obviously, you've never gotten to know anything about cats. Domesticated cats and water are natural enimies. First of all, that's why domesticated cats were given the instinct to bathe themselves (licking their fur). On the occations when an owner is stupid and cruel enough to emerse a cat into water, it's a matter of submission. The cat is helpless, because they cannot fight back, being weighed down by water and SHOCK (take a look).
Well I have a cat and I can assure you that you can't force a cat to do anything they really don't want to do. If those cats really didn't want to be in the tub the guy would be bleeding by now. It's like putting a kid in a bath, they complain at first but once they're in they don't seem to mind so much. I personally don't think you should bathe cats, they do a good enough job keeping themselves clean but maybe they just like being in the water. Anyway, they're not being abused.
Well, could just be that they hate less being soaked but somewhat warm than being soaked and starting to freeze in the air. So they prefer the lesser torture -- wouldn't you?

Yup~ I've seen pictures where the Chinese have nailed breathing kittens to the wall to make them suffer. There is even a video on here somewhere where a Chinese woman is cutting a live kittens head off. :/
What these people are doing is not 'cruel', far from it.
