@sherlockstalker later on in the show, we find out that darken rahl and the keeper had already planned this, when rahl had learned all his powers that he can control from his bloodline he was not satisfied, and was greedy, he read in a book that there was a way to gain more powers, so he follwed the books' instructions and killed himself just like it told him to, when he was in the underworld he communed with the keeper and made him a deal, he would kill for the keeper, he was the very first...
