Today the song might be regarded as politically incorrect as its subject is an Aborigine boy in the Outback who is none too bright. In the end he has to be told that if he wants his boomerang to come back he should first throw it. :(
Song's a bit racist, but was recorded well before Aboriginals were made citizens. I remember dancing around to this song like a maniac...I would have been about 5 yo.
@Aussiebabe63 G'day... Yairs, well, one may see a few funny sides to this one. An aspect is that y'r clip links to one of mine, that y'll find by searching, 'boomerang aerophysics'..! Another, is that most contemporary Boomerang throwers & carvers don't understand the interplay of forces, & effects, involved..! Being a bona-fide Mad- Scientist, & also a retired Low-Speed Aerodynamics-Consultant... It appeared to be The Fool On The Hill's duty. Ciao !
@brokenneckygor what was the year this song played to the jap POWs then mate? Just curious as this song wasn't released until 1961 so maybe you can help me out...
its funny i just heard this in english as an example as a ballad i think, and we have an Australian math teacher and he's one of my favorite teachers too!
In the old days, the men would play this song over and over again for the Jap POWs. They loved it!---Sgt. Rendo "Rock" Van Diemeter (retired) "My Years in New Guinea" publ. privately
Aussie Diana, what a cool vid, so happy to see this, as I was waving mine all over the place, and now that I have instructions, maybe it will work. Let me try, first, back, then throw, oh yes very nice. WONK, well dammit, you did not tell me I had to catch it, too! Thanks for the great old song, though, love it, and love your art for it
as i dimmly recall, lol, it was mid '60's , about the same time as songs like Monster Mash, and Tie Me Kangeroo Down Sport were coming out, and all of Rolf Harris' great aussie fun songs. genre-- who knows, how would you fit Itsey Bitsey Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini into a genre either, lol
Excellent. I remember this from when I was a kid back in the 60's . It was Charley Drake, not Rolf Harris who sang it. Harris sang 'Tie Me Kangaroo Down, Sport'
The latter gave rise to the term 'Harrisment' I believe.
The song is actually very old and very British in a silly sort of way. It harks back to the time the British had a stronger sense of empire. visuals are good.
Remember this from years ago. Had forgotten about it. It was a time of no political correctness. And it was wonderful. Odd crappy song that should be appreciated for what it is ... humour.
Well done aussie babe...used to hear this song when I was younger....forgot all about it...I dont think its racist at all...and I love some of the pics you've put to the music...make's me glad to be an aussie too!...
Fantastic!!!. I used to play this particular version when I was a kid on the 70s in Spain. They gave the single free for buying some cheese triangles.
I heard a different version of this song on a CD of songs for kids when I was very little, does anyone know who sang that version or where I could find it?
