I went to High School with the Guitar Player Kevin Russell. Phil the singer and bass player is still playing in local Detroit Bars. Kevin still lives in California.
this is a modern classic.every once in awhile, some little band from somewhere just picks a classic like this right out of the ether, and it's forever theirs, and immortalizes the lucky lads, but they remain anonymous.a classic every bit as much as the cars' 'touch and go'.just timeless, yet it instantly transports you back 30 years..dang,i want some of those years back-these guys had a lot of competition, and yet stood in a field of their own..p'rhaps a little loverboyesque, yet unpretentious-FAB!!!
We covered this in the 80s when it was fresh out on the radio. Drum part has some cool changes I enjoyed learning. The lyrics message gets blurred into the performers well. So if you play this song at the club live, in the ladies eyez...
This is F"n Awesome! I had no Idea 707 was on YT. Never thought to check before.Isnt that Tod Howarth on guitar? I think he went on to play guitar with Frehleys comet? They did the song Megaforce, but frehleys Comet called it "Calling On You".. am I correct?
@dewycatt2112 - Not quite. Tod is not in this video. That's Kevin Russell on guitar. However, you are correct that Tod was in 707 later on and then was in Frehley's Comet (as well as spending some time with Cheap Trick). Yes, the Comet did a version of Megaforce and renamed it. I'm glad you enjoyed the video.

I'm 45 never saw what they looked like until now, really didn't know their name ? I was from the beginning to end of Midnight special, why I didn't pay much attention to it I'll never know ? I'm looking through these now and thinking.. shit ! all these bands were on here ?
felizrana was correct it was "for you" -the manfred mann version . though back in the day i hated loosing in b.o.t.b. , i remember the group that won played " i could be good for you " followed by "for you" and zep's rock & roll . they deserved to win ! again thanks ! i now have both songs on the i pod !
great video . i thought this was the song i was thinking about but its not , so maybe someone can help . back in 80 or 81 i was in a battle of the bands in high school and the band we lost to played a song , i think about someone in the hospital , maybe wife or child and some of the lyrics were about the last days or something . i know i don't have much info for ya , it had great radio play and i remember we hated loosing because of that song !!!!!!!! but it was a great song .
maybe a band called Le Roux song called Lifeline....or I'll bet it's New England and the title is Don't Ever Wanna Lose Ya. Go to CDbaby to hear New England ....and Le Roux has their own web site
Very cool, right after Duke McFadden left the band as Kevin Russel is singing lead vocals with Phil Bryant. Even without this knowledge you can clearly hear the difference from the original recording therefore *GASP* they are not lip-synching.
There's a lot of great stuff like this that we never here on classic rock or 80's stations. What a shame this is good music, john hall band and michael stanley band come to mind as some more really good bands we never hear anymore on the airwaves. Sometimes i wish i was a dj i would bring all this great music back to life!!!
I to use to sit in and sing with Deep Cut at The Studio Lounge and in fact I was at Chatters last night I Phil sat in with Dean Bucher (former drummer Deep Cut & Rare Earth) and sang Free Alright Now. Phil also has a new band "Low Down and Dirty" they have a Myspace page and just recently played at Frankies on Ford Rd. In Garden City
I accidentally met the drummer online- Jim McClarty. He's here on YT discussing theological questions like "what is the point of hell?" It's a 7 part discussion... interesting... Jim's way cool!
Lead guitarist is Kevin Russell. I have seen him playing samll venues in Marin County (N. of San Francisco) in the 90's. He is an awesome and very talented guitarist. I did ot know at the times I saw him that he played guitar for 707, one of my favorite bands from the early 80's. Kevin had a major heart atack in the late 90's and was out of the picture for a while but after major heart surgery he is back producing and playing around San Francisco.
The Wolfman is one of the most historic disc jockeys in the history of rock n roll music.
His charming and risque appeal (for its time) made him the most entertaining figure in American radio.
His warmth and breadth of knowledge gave pop music to the country. He also never talked down to his listeners.
Sad to think that one need be a "shock jock" today to leave an impact. Not that they don't have their place, but Wolfman's programs called for a bit less hate and just a bit more talent.
I've had the pleasure of seeing Phil do this song a number of times and chills flow thru my spine. Drifting's reference to the Studio would be the band Deep Cut. They played at a Benefit tonight at Chatter's in Westland about a mile down the road from the old Studio. Thank you guys! It freakin rocked. Yes, they did play "I Could Be Good for You" amongst 7 or so songs. Thanx to all the bands and Fans that made this a success. It don't happen without you! Love ya, Pudge
I used to sit in and play drums for Deep Cut every now and then when they played at the Studio lounge on Sundays Phil is one of the coolest and honest guys I know.
The pride of Livonia Michigan! I currently work with the bass player Phil Bryant right now and he is a cool guy. It's amazing to see him playing on this video I'll have to ask him about being on the Midnight Speical show! He's currently playing in a local band called the Sax Maniacs.
Kevin Russell is the guitarist, vocalist and Spinal Tap "Nigel" look-alike in this video. Kevin Chalfant was later included in the Megaforce lineup of the band. Finally, there is Mr. Cronin, who needs little introduction :)
Great stuff, though, and sad this style is "passe".
At the odd chance any members happen to view this video and any of the comments listed here. I just wanted to let them know that this song was my all time favorite all throughout high school.
This song along with Last Chance (Shooting Star), Don't You Know What Love Is (Touch), Ah! Leah (Donnie Iris), Mama Let Him Play (Doucette), I'm Leaving (Taxxi), The Beat Goes On/Switchin' To Glide (The Kings), Can't Shake You (Santers), Dreams (Barry Goudreau), Never Been Any Reason (Head East), For You (Manfred Mann's Earth Band), Go For Soda (Kim Mitchell), On The Loose (Saga), Fox On The Run (Sweet), Raise A Little Hell (Trooper), will be with us longer than any shaven head pop star.
worked with phil bryant at carls jr ,dude was my asst manager, nite crew, after work dude would pull out spears of weed for our enjoyment ...cool ass dude
What a surprize!!!! I'm new to YouTube...but so far, the experience has been great! Where did you ever find this video? I haven't heard this song in at least 25 Years!!! Brings back alot of fun memories!
707...straight outta detroit rock city...where all the greatest rock & roll hails from. this stuff got me through high school. the midnight special keep me home on weekends, i never went to parties...was a bit of a geek...but now that i can play music...i get invited to parties all the time...check out my band 7th day creeps on myspace...you may dig it...you may not. but wrap yer heads around us anyways...whadda got to lose??? jimmy.
When I saw this video I immediately thought of Nigel Tufnel too! Dead on! Great song and thanks to whomever added this to You Tube! Any one else have some one hit wonders to add?
This is one helluva job and a difficult song to do live. They are NOT lip synching.... But the lead gtr player reminds me so much of Nigel Tufnel of Spinal tap that I wonder if Christopher Guest used him as his prototype...
Saw these guys open up for REO Speedwagon in London-they also were the REO roadies-it was an awesome show and here you see them giving it all they got

Many reasons that if this song was released today you'd never hear it
1 It's not Shit Hop/Crap/C&W
2 It's too long - kids have the attention span of gnats
3 These guys have no look - singer/bass player looks like Chuck Norris, guitarist looks like Nigel Tufnel
4 It's not hip hop/rap/C&W
Sad 'cause this is what music should be - tuneful, powerful, cool lyrics, great players...just points out that music sucks today...

Phil Bryant (the guy with the green shirt) is my father's cousin. I've always dreamed of meeting him but I never have.

Try Manfred Mann, " I came for you " , originally written by Bruce Springsteen. I like Manfred Mann's version better. Please let me know. Thanks.

GREAT SONG CRANK IT UP .

I SO remember them! I live in Toledo and when I was in high school in the 80s, my 3 favorite radio stations were WRIF, WLLZ, and Rock 103 WIQB!
Those were the days...

I have their albums on vinyl. I listened to them a lot back when I was in the Air Force. Not a Boston caliber, but good in their own right.

Wolfman Jack sure was one of a kind. Ah-ooooh!
rickyleepilfer 3 years ago
The Wolfman is one of the most historic disc jockeys in the history of rock n roll music.
His charming and risque appeal (for its time) made him the most entertaining figure in American radio.
His warmth and breadth of knowledge gave pop music to the country. He also never talked down to his listeners.
Sad to think that one need be a "shock jock" today to leave an impact. Not that they don't have their place, but Wolfman's programs called for a bit less hate and just a bit more talent.

My song to my best friend.
We met freshman year in college when this song first was on the radio.
Partners in crime (and I really do mean crime!) ever since.

One of my favorite tunes!

I used to sit in and play drums for Deep Cut every now and then when they played at the Studio lounge on Sundays Phil is one of the coolest and honest guys I know.

this band was cool, they played at a gig
in I believe 1999 or sometime before the
studio lounge in westland michigan closed,
DAMN IT ( SAMS BANNANA DRINKS RULES LOL )
ANYways he was very blunt and approachable...
I am a songwriter and he said " hey young dude
just make sure you get a real good lawyer and don't get fucked on the percetages" end quote and I can respect that AND THAT NIGHT
THEY SOUNDED BETTER THAN THIS- it proves if it's in your blood it's in the blood rock and roll forever

The pride of Livonia Michigan! I currently work with the bass player Phil Bryant right now and he is a cool guy. It's amazing to see him playing on this video I'll have to ask him about being on the Midnight Speical show! He's currently playing in a local band called the Sax Maniacs.

Kevin Cronin ??? Dude at least get it right if you are going to post
It is Kevin Chalfant
musicatto 4 years ago
Too many Kevins to keep track of, eh? :)

This is one helluva job and a difficult song to do live. They are NOT lip synching.... But the lead gtr player reminds me so much of Nigel Tufnel of Spinal tap that I wonder if Christopher Guest used him as his prototype...
