damn..i know that song sionce it was released, and like it since then, have it even in the car.BUT: i was convinced that the singer is a cool black badass. And now I see its a hyperactive, skinny neurotic whity. Well ok, at least he has same trousers as I used to wear...
Hello, Adam(ant) where you been,I said stand aside cause I'm a feeling mean! I've a had gut full of you and I'm feeling bad, well your an ugly old bore and ain't I glad!
@johnjsturman New York Dolls, the Ramones, even the Saints formed well before the Damned. the Damned were from the 100 club scene that included Generation X etc.. Peter Tosh did the first well known 16 bars on Get up Stand up which came out in 1973 but some say toasting, or DJing or MCing was already going on even earlier. So you're sort of right in that they were part of the early popularity of the two but to say "one of the very first" is to stretch things a bit too far IMHO.
@kemicon The might be part of the early popularity of Punk, since the Dolls weren't too popular anywhere, but Rap had been popular for several years. The Sugarhill Gang had been recording since 79. The Clash and Blondie did Rap songs in 80 and early 81. This was more like a parody of a genre that had already become a trendy influence among contemporary punk and new wave bands.
@kemicon "New York Dolls, the Ramones, even the Saints formed well before the Damned" and Pink Fairies, Sweet, Alice Cooper and Hawkwind formed before all of them, what's your point? So wot!
Even with this memorable tune & his equally memorable Christmas song 'One Christmas Catalogue', Captain Sensible was very unfairly underrated in the music world. Sometimes those in the music business wouldn't know great talent if it came up & bit them in the ass!
@AnthonysDen I don't know about "unfairly" underrated. Fairly underrated I reckon about sums up the Captain's amusing career, post Tennille of course:)
@Toranaboy634 You may be right. But no matter how one puts it, Captain Sensible had such talent & did not get the recognition he rightfully deserved. Needless to say, he more than should have.
@Reimerink Do you mean the blonde and brunette who sang with Young as The Royal Family? I always wondered who they were - two stunnas. I saw them on The Tube with him back in the day and recently on a clip from a kids' Saturday morning TV show, hosted by Sandi Toksvig of all people. Any clues as to the identity of Paul Young's backing singers?
It got a lot of airplay at the time (being the follow up to the dreadful number one "Happy Talk") but only made No.26 in the U.K. Should have been a bigger hit though.
The good captain broke this out in Anaheim, Ca last year during The Damned concert; he seemed surprised that we sang along. Good music travels far and fast.
@postyesterdayman - It was a top 30 hit mate, number 26, not the giddy heights of Happy Talk or indeed Glad it's all over ( forgot about that ) but still a hit.
@aforest86 Think before you write. If you only take "Wot" and from that you call CS a one-hit-wonder, then you know very, VERY little about CS. His WHOLE oeuvre is a wonder. You didn't do your homework, mate ...
