W. Lee O'Dahiel became governor of Texas in 1938. He formed the Lighcrust Doughboys in about 1931 to advertise his very own Hillbilly Flour Company. Gov. O'Daniel sang with them for a long time. Later, the band became Bob Wills and the Lightcrust Doughboys. It was a Western Swing Band. My cousin, Jim Gough, has a Western Swing Band that plays all over Texas now. Jim is in the Western Swing Band Hall of Fame in Lubbock, TX.
@guambetty - Oh Susanna - there is some kind of production copy at the end of this video. Remember watching TV with my mom once and this happened to be on. She said that my dad was in the movie. Of course, I was like "NO WAY". Sure enough he was.
Not sure if this number was included. I remember one where my dad serenaded Gene Autry and his lady friend.
@guambetty - he had already left to form Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys.
The Light Crust Doughboys were a blessing for our family during the lean years of the 1930's. Their main deal was regular broadcasts live on WBAP radio.
By the way, I could swear I once heard The Light Crust Doughboys covering Salty Dog but I cannot track it down. Anyone know if such a recording exists?
This old-time stuff rocks! Western Swing bands had the best musicians around at the time ( I was recently turned on to Bob Wills etc.). These ol boys were straight up shreddin it.
@kenny4263 - I had your dad as our Orchestra conductor at William James middle school. He was really inspirational. It's so cool to see him young and having so much fun in this video.

Didn't Bob Wills come from this Band?

Great find. More people should know about this band. They still perform in Texas (although most of the guys you see here have long since died.)
