@bushfan1948 "Maid Of Orleans" by OMD. The song is very significant to the story as a whole. The lyrics "she cared so much, she offered up her body to the grave" knowing that her death in her actual world would take her back to Gene and the team she cares for.

Also, Gene Hunt seems to know about a great young copper and he says it almost as if he's letting on that he knows that the Summers here is the young Summers from the future, or whether he's put 2&2 together and knew about old Summers shooting young Summers. Either that or it's just clever writing and not meant to mean anything, or did Summers see into the future somehow and know Gene would shoot him?
The ending to the series especially because of this ending could be something like "Are you the dreamer or merely part of someone else's dream?" Meaning that maybe alex and sam were never real but gene is and it's in fact him who is in the coma.
Actually, the series 2 DVD has an interview with the writers which explains what the ending is about, but not how it leads into the next series although it gives a few things away.
Won't post it here because of spoilers but I can tell you if you want. I haven't seen the interview but it's been posted on a few forums. Essentially, it confirmed what I already believed about the ending.
I have another theory: The world of Gene Hunt is a parallel world but in the past, and both Sam and Alex arrived there through its state of coma. That's why the visions of the future and the words that I said from your body in this dimension.
I have a question, I understand that Sam would dream of Annie because she really existed in the past, the same goes between Hunt and Alex, but then why Sam Hunt never dreamed I met him in his past?
I used to watch that show with my little cousin. Normally in that clip the Ninky Nonk comes out the other side of the hedge and keeps going as usual... but I can't watch that episode anymore without thinking of this, and watching for it to go out of tune briefly and then Gene Hunt will appear going "Bolly!".
It's really intriguing, though, to think why this happened and who/what Gene Hunt really is.
Alex has gotta be in the 3rd series. There's meant 2 be more about Gene in series 3 but it still has to resolve Alex's issues. I think the rumours that she wont be in it at all are just rumours
I'll just quickly explain the ending for anyone who doesn't understand it because I was confused by this at first aswell. Gene Hunt shoots Alex Drake, and she passes out. When she wakes up she appears to be in a hospital in 2008 and she believes she's made it out of her coma and back into reality. However, when she see's and hears Gene Hunt on the TV screen and he's in a hospital, she realises she's in a coma in 1982. So she gets freaked out and starts screaming!
If you notice that the hospital staff don't stop and help her... it could be that the modern day is a fantasy and her reality is 1982 and always was. If that's the case... :-/ I don't get it.
Another theory I read was that Gene Hunt, Chris Skelton and Ray Carling are all from the future like Alex but they've been back in time too long to remember their original lives, unlike her and Sam Tyler who can. Remember Sam Tyler deliberately killed himself to go back to 1973 again after he woke up.
I'm pretty sure that she's in a coma within a coma. The third series supposedly tells what happened to Sam Tyler, and didn't gene say Sam had died (7 years) before, in a car accident? If so, judging from how long alex has been in her coma (8 months in the 80s, 13 hours in real life) maybe the second coma is even longer, and she might meet sam in the coma before he dies.
Martin Summers kind of had to die in 2008/9 anyway because he shot his younger self and thus wouldn't be alive in the modern day in any case. It's all very strange, actually.
Gene is trying to help him "pass over"

Hmm... another thing.
Gene Hunt says: "I will shoot".
Summers: "I know".

Clever writing.

But the hospital staff thing could just be the NHS being lazy... we'll have to wait until next year to find out....!

how do you know that sam tylers gonna be in series 3? i really hope he is but i thought john simm wasnt goin to do it again? x
tingtang13 2 years ago
I'm not sure, but Ashes to Ashes released a small amount of information, which said that:
What happened to sam tyler &
Who gene hunt really is,
will be shown in series 3.
Maybe what happened to sam will just be told, but it might be acted.

omg i hope so- life on mars was soo good!

Indeed! That must've been the coolest episode ending- A bit strange, but very, very clear.
GirMittens 2 years ago
I'm interested to see what direction series 3 will take. I'd heard rumours of a third series but I didn't expect series 2 to end like that.
Apparently series 3 will answer all our questions about who/what Gene Hunt is.

who body was tht on the trolley?
swfcjess 2 years ago
Martin Summers
ohnicky 2 years ago
but isnt she back in the present?
swfcjess 2 years ago
Apparently, however Martin Summers was ALSO from the present - he was in a coma in the next room, and when he died in 1982, he also died in 2008/9.
ohnicky 2 years ago
How exactly can Martin Summers be in her version of 1982. Didn't her mind just create Martin Summers as a method of returning to the present?
Similiar to Life on Mars, where Sam Tyler was assisted by the cop from Hyde.
ZTF24 2 years ago

Some think 1982 is her reality and the future is a fantasy. Either that or Gene Hunt can travel through time :S
We'll know within a year. I reckon they had the script written ages ago and they'll be filming later in the year.
