I can't believe ANYONE could complain about your FREE lessons. If you can't pick up these licks without tab then you might be in a little over your head. You're a fantastic player Ben. Thanks for helping me be a better picker!
Thank you so much for this great version, and all the other great stuff you post!! I'm gonna stick my neck out here, but for people asking for tabs... If you just take the time to learn the hard way,you will get a lot more out of it,and train your ears as well.
I would like to also add my 2 cents. You are an excellent role model for musicians. By that, I mean, there are many out there who think there is a "right way" to play a particular tune. Nothing could be further from the truth. You didn't go out and find someone's arrangement and photocopy it. You WROTE your own arrangement. It's yours. You also show people that you can learn a few licks and then insert them into everything and that's okay. In fact it lets you learn a lot of tunes fast.
Wait, I need to get this straight. So yesterday you did not actually know this tune. You did not know the melody at all. So you went on Itunes and found one version. And based on that you sat down and wrote this arrangement of Angeline Baker (probably the best arrangement I ever heard). Amazing.
But on a serious note I can't thank you enough for these videos, very useful for me. thanks so much.
Hey Banjo Ben! This is probably one of my favorite arrangements that you've posted. Your videos are so good it inspired me to start creating fiddle lessons. I posted a free fiddle lesson for this tune on my channel. Check it out!
Hi ben loving your videos but cant find speed picking 2 have joined your website and purchased FMB for guitar WOW.I am working on my picking technique and any tips would be welcome keep it up Best Don
I have the question to end all questions - when I start crawling up the neck, I have know idea what notes to hit anymore because I am not familiar with my scales and whatnot up the neck. I think a video that shows how all the scales are related up and down the neck within the context of certain chords, or something like that, would be great. THANKS FOR ALL YOU DO FOR FREE. Also - if you play the banjer and guitar already, is the dobro easy?
My father is in the Churchmen and I'd love to actually be able to pick this tune w/ them on stage. Is there anyway you could email me the tabs? harbourj@goldmail.etsu.edu
@schweppse If you go to my website, you can purchase the tab for $4.99 as a Silver Pick member, which is free to join. If you join as a Gold Pick member, you can have access to all my tabs/videos for the current rate of $5/month. Thanks!
Allow me to plug your tab site. I was reluctant to purchase a single song for $5 especially after transcribing the tab myself from this video. I did so because I was not getting the rhythm correct. I must say, I am very pleased with the format of your tabs, especially the inclusion of pick direction. I'll be purchasing many more. I love your lessons and I look forward to your website, God bless
Ben, I just want to echo these past couple comments. Thank you so much! This videos are great and thank you for just your kind, pleasant demeanor. It makes this more fun and enjoyable.
Dude! you are so awesome and I really appreciate the time you spend in giving us "viewers" awesome lessons!!!!! It's so awesome!! I love playing the guitar but unfortunately I don't take lessons so you are the perfect one to learn from!!! yay!
I heard from David Grier that it is "Angeline Baker", a song named after a woman that Stephen Foster knew, but apparently somehow it got turned into "Angeline the Baker". Just an FYI :)
@Lewey8705 An asinine point at best, any picker familiar with this tune at all knows it by either name. Grier recorded it on Freewheeling as Angeline THE Baker.....just an FYI ;^).

this song has really been making a comeback in picking circles lately.
Also, ben, thanks for all the lessons! I started with bag-o-licks, and have managed to get a regular jam going with some guys and it's amazing what a little bit of instruction can spawn!
what a pretty song. it just begs you to learn it. the dropped d adds so much. i like the droning effect being a bagpipe player, in addition to guitar. kind of celtic. thanks ben for your efforts. you are appreciated!!
Hi Ben, Great stuff. I really want to learn this tune. Thank you for taking the time to post these videos. You are very descriptive, this helps me since I'm totally blind. Thanks for slowing the tune down. I will check out your mando stuff. Keep up the great work.
you must have a good set of fans..i was just thinking the other day I wanted to learn this song! I kept hearing both of the "angeline" songs on XM radio, haha
This is exactly the right speed to teach it my friend, keep doing your awsome job please , it is worth a lot to me and many others. chears to you yyyyiiii aHHh !!!
listen, banjo ben, i've been playing guitar for many years and would consider myself an accomplished player, and i have been looking for a user friendly medium to learn bluegrass picking (a style a admittedly know little about) and your lessons a great. you come across well and are very concise, especially given the time restrictions of youtube. as far as everyone that writes hate mail, maybe they should just practice up. its great that you are earnestly into music enough to share. thank you
great tune!!!...makin me learn how to up-pick...anyone else have problems cross picking that stuff???...that's always been hard for me....it's probably cuz I was self taught mostly and down picked a TON...I play hard rock too...so I am much stronger down picking...
Beautiful arrangement -- really like the drone feel ! Never heard anything quite like it. I'm only familiar with the Ken Perleman (also drop D) fingerstyle version -- much simpler. This really expands my ideas about the tune !
good clean soundwaves, thanks man, what is that peace in the hole of the guitar, dont be upset,JESUS is perfect and he still gets put down, and had hate male,
You are most kind to provide the many lessons that you have posted. I would love to get the tab for this piece. If you need to be compensated for your time and the postage that is more than fair.
I cant believe BanjoBen gets flame or hate mail either. Such inbred ingrates have ZERO appreciation of this man's contribution to his craft; both in technical skill and donation of what looks like a lot of time.
While I have always liked bluegrass (in particular mandolin). I never thought I could play such material. Fortunately I stumbled across BanjoBen's lessons. I can't play the stuff yet but I am proud to say he is my new mentor. Thx for all that you do BanjoBen!
P.S. Request: can you suggest a song -- and teach it -- that would be good in almost any picking session with other folks. Soldiers Joy seems to come up a lot, and Red Haired Boy , others?
this -- for free! -- is getting hate mail. Say it isn't so. I've been watching your vids for a few weeks now. I pay for a lesson every week from another talented musician, but I've got to say I learn more from these vids. Please keep them coming. They are so helpful and so inspiring.
Hello! Here's an 17-year-old boy from Finland enjoying all of your videos. Thanks for the licks and this awesome song! You definitely are an inspiration!
Ben, hope you remember me. Friend of Duckworth's, PensonStringWerks in Arlington, Tx. He tells me you are working in Nashville, and I'm glad to hear it! You are awesome talented.
