Just did this job the other day, it was hell let me tell ya. I managed to get it done though, I live in Canada and really didn't have a choice. I think the guy I got the truck off of knew that this problem existed. Just glad the jobs done, I was quoted $450 cash and they would've recharge the A/C too. I saved $350 so far with the new parts that I needed to complete the job. Thanks for the video, very easy to follow.
You know you can unclog that heater core several different ways. Only time you pull a heater core is if its leaking. I would of used Draino and a mini snake attached to a drill would unplug it. then flush the core out with boiling hot water to remove the draino along with an air hose attachment.
Its what I done to my 1999 Durango and it heats up nicely now.
QUESTION- a bad heater core will not heat right? mine does heat but its leaking i guess. i have coolant on the drivers side carpet. can it be the heater core or a bad connecting hose?
I have a 2004 durango that has a separate climate control for the back. The heater in the front works fine, but all the vents in the back blow cold air. Do I have two heater cores and one of them is clogged? Or could the problem be something else?
are the new ones as tough i have a 01 looks the same but the part they r showing looks totally different looks like different fittings as well. did some 01 models have one and the newer have another how do i know which i need . ??? i live in ga howmuch do u charge for this repair???
@ Cooperlakeautomotive- If there is an odorless visible steam emitting from the ac vents, could this be a reason to replace the heater core on a 2000 dodge Durango?
Just finished with this task, wasn't near as bad as I thought it was going to be. Managed to finish it up in around 8 hours. This video, instructional or not, showed key details to make things a tad easier, thanks for posting it!
What they don't show you is that you have to take the bolt out that holds in the dipstick tube. Hard to get to is an understatement...it took me 45 minutes to take it out and put it back in...the one bolt. There is an 11mm nut behind it that has to come out to get the HVAC unit out. Overall I don't think it was that difficult. You actually don't have to take the dash all the way out and can leave the fuse block connections on the drivers side intact.
@jbrouhard77 I have an 01 Dakota and unfortunately I am going to have to tackle this project. I'm not scared to do it, I just hate working on cars anymore. But! I just bought a brand new CD player and GPS, so now is a good time to do it all at once.
hey cooper lakes automotive, I have a question about the dash panels, i own a 97 Dakota and want to switch the entire dash paneling with that of a darker dakota or durango, is it possible to just take the panels off, or does it need to come off in one piece like you guys did in this video?
I wasn't aware these cores were redesigned. I just did a 01 dakota and new chrysler core was same as the one I replaced. Just an FYI, there is no need to pull radio or hvac control head. Removing steering column allows you to rest the dash on seats.
@honjames5 they had to pull the control head, because the Mode Door Actuators are Vacuum Controlled, and they did not want to mix up the vacuum lines.
@mike92589 disconnect the battery before you start, let it sit for 10 minutes to allow all the electrical current to die. after 10 mins. you're ready to go.
i love speed up mode, makes it look so easy. lol. those bolts on the inside of the engine compartment are hard to get to, and if the truck has ac, be sure to have the lines drained, so that you can unhook them to get the box out. im doing another one of these tomorrow, and they are never quick, take your time, lol. great vid guys, very good.
EXCELLENT! Thanks for posting. Now I have to go swap the heater core on my 99 Eldorado Cadillac. At least I have an idea what I'm in for. Too bad they can't make a better design for heater core replacements! GREAT VID!
I'm not looking forward to this on my 2001 Durango. My heater core is leaking coolant and blows anti-freeze vapor through the vents. Where planing on doing this are self's, we have a friend who works on Durangos who is going to help, any tips for going about this
