I love everything abt this song, lol Quagmire comes out with a vocal solo at 2:26! and Jan akkerman looks like Liam Neeson, but anyway i need to stop comparing them to things from our culture, their music is too good to be compared to anything from today or any time.. thijs van leer is one the most creative and amazingly talented multi-musician with a sense of humor to have ever lived, jan akkerman plays guitar like no one else, the bass and drums are perfect.. as a band their in theyre own world
Great footage !!! I have seen I dunno how many guys with hair the same as mine back in the good bad old days & the birds look great Too !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Fookin hell !! am I really this old...........I look back & wonder where all those fantastic years have gone.......................
This is a fine example of how wonderfull youtube is. Surprisingly pleasant mixture of old footage (super 8?) and original music track. Very well done. thank you.
this song is what created my wild snare style playing drums.....follow the guitar with the snare, bass with the bass drum.....it may be overplaying at times but hey it worked here and for Moon :)
This group Focus was a Dutch group who I saw on a couple of occasions while living in Holland back in the 70's! As you can imagine, the Pink Pop Festival was one of the grandest, but very basic shows being put on in those days! I got to go to 4 of them with the last one being in 78 and although I can't prove it, I know Focus played a surprise appearance there and billed it as their last gig together! This is the best track of Hocus Pocus I've seen on You-tube! Kudos!
I seriously cany get enough of this song, been on youtube fgor 20 miutes, only song ive heard about 7 times. that gutarists is serious sick, and the yodelin man, that serious consentration when doing that with the organ, that guy must be somewhere else to do that and serious talent
I loved this video. It's just like Woodstock only different. Everybody is dressed and well-behaved...Someone has taken this footage and overdubbed it with the original studio version of the song. This is the first Focus song, and to my knowledge, was the only song that got play on American radio. The 1976 (i think) Cincinnatti Reds used it for their theme song. Could be wrong about the year, but just by the fan base this song enlisted, Focus was and is firmly ingrained in our music culture. @@
I agree that the solo at 3.34 is possibly the nicest in Christendom - not sure he could ever have played it twice (Akkerman being Akkerman!) - but wow. Sure it would even meet the approval of JS Bach had he been around!
This is not live version, but it still rocks...And yes, Jan Akkerman is very, very, very underrated guitar player. He played like no one at that time, his live solos just blew me away.
I used to have the performance with the original sound on tape, but it is worn out. The sound was heavier and from an Italian bootleg. You can see the microphones in front of the speakers, because it was recorded for radio. Television broadcasted pinkpop for the first time in 1975.
The 2nd guitar solo is fabulous. Only John mcLaughlin & maybe Larry Corryell were playing at such a monster technical level at that time. Jan was a killer guitarist then.
Waar blijven de superbands uit eind 60 begin 70.......Brainbox, Focus, Alquin, powerplay..etc. [woooow Piere vd Linde]

JA underrated? I'm not so sure, those into guitar KNOW JA's the man! A talent. But checkout PvdL he is one slick drummer.

he is extremely underatted though, and he was so ahead of his time to. playing wise

jan akkerman is so under rated. We should be hearing about him just as much as we hear about jimmy page or jeff beck.
paulgilbertisgod 4 years ago
They are great guitarplayers but Jan Is a fusion of classical ,jazz and rock, with all respect,Jeff and Jimmy are not.
If you're from a small country it was probably harder to get media attention and Jan wasn't a mediaman as we know in the Netherlands
burnsmay 2 years ago
jeff beck - greensleves, beck's bolero, goodbye pork pie hat, you mean to tell me he's not classically and jazz influenced?
