I was a mile from the epicenter for this and, though I grew up in So. Cal. and was used to earthquakes, the difference was unnerving.

I was used to abrupt, shaking and loud. What happened that day was like being on a ship in high seas with no sound at all, just the undulating ground and the sound of the houses and trees around me groaning and swaying.

They say the quake was only a few minutes but, being so close the the source, it lasted a good ten minutes or longer o.O
