Unfortunately Booze will not improve his hedge. His defensive presence in general is non-existance. (He will get a decent amount of steals and boards). I feel bad for Chicago. The jazz are much better off with Jeff.
@bballbreakdown Its great to see someone go after the Bulls on their defense. Especially when they're so good at it (statistically ppg-wise). As a huge Noah fan, I have to admit that most of his impact comes from his hustle. Now that Coach T is in, I expect the Bulls to give Boston a run for their money this year and be a contender in the next couple years.
As for Boozer, I've never found him to be a great team defender. Perhaps I'm wrong here, but do you think rest is really going to help him?
bballbreakdown I'm 5 10 and I am able to reverse 180 dunks. Honestly, anyone can do it, just workout the right way. I recommend the workout at "50-inch-vertical(dot)com" but any program could be used if you are sure they work
on the offensive end. But it seems that even in this category he has cleaned up his game quite a bit from last year.
As you may recall from your first game analysis of the Bulls-Cavaliers series, Noah took a liking to outside shooting. This season he has spent more time near the basket (63%) with great success (0.624 eFG%).
So if he can clean up his act on hedging (and possibly some day dreaming), he'd probably be the best inside defender in the league.
man (Howard) in view. Then when the shot goes up, he boxes out Howard; good defense.
In short, Noah has become a very active and good defender. His activity shows why it's not secret why he averages 12.2 rebounds (2nd in league) per game, while 4.1 of them are on the offensive glass (3rd in league). I liked watching him during the Lakers game, and I can now see that it was no fluke why he played well during it.

For example, 0:47 into the film, Noah rotates off his man (Howard) to cover Lewis at the perimeter; good help defense. 1:13, Noah plays very good man-man defense, challenges the shot with good form, and makes Howard miss the shot; good defense. 1:39, Howard has low post position out of a set play; nothing Noah can do about it beyond challenging the shot, which he does; good effort. 2:43, Noah tries to help on the penetration while keeping his CONTINUED...
@bballbreakdown I just got back from a business trip to realize you had put up some new videos. As always I'm excited and interested in your topics.
With that said, I'd have to disagree with your statement in regards to Noah. You argued that Noah "...needs to understand how to play defense better..." Beyond your point about him being a poor defender on the pick and roll/pop, I don't see him needing to learn more on defense. In fact, from what I saw in your Bulls-Magic game analysis CONTINUED...
On 1:58, why didn't you mention about how stupid Deng played that possession? First of all, he had 4 seconds left in the shot clock. He has two very good options, either shoot the wide open three or pass it to two wide open teammates. Instead, he drive and threw up a bad shot. It wasn't Noah's fault that Deng played like an idiot.
@N0CAPE OK - he definitely should've shot it - if it weren't for the fact that he needs to dribble before he shoots almost all the time (another Bad Deng trait)... I don't know why Noah drifted out next to him, though. Noah should've gone down to the hoop and tried to get position to rebound, since the shot would've most likely missed since it was going to be rushed. So Deng didn't do great either, but I just think Noah has bad spacial awareness
That took some guts to call Noah a 'decent shooter', percentage wise you're right. It blows my mind when I watch it go in with some consistency. Chicago will be good.
@bballbreakdown If he was Joakim you would let him play for you. Be honest now Coach. You know as well as I do that Joakim isn't out there to shoot. Any offense you get from him is a bonus. He's a feocious defender and rebounder.
@bballbreakdown If he was Joakim you would let him play for you. Be honest now Coach. You know as well as I do that Joakim isn't out there to shoot. Any offense you get from him is a bonus. He's a decent defender and rebounder. That's all you need to be to be valuable and you know he's valuable.
I like what you said about not having extra movement in your jump shot. When I was playing, I had a ridiculous jump shot and it was just a snap of the wrist at the top of the jump. Interesting stuff.
That said I think you made a grievous mistake analyzing the Chicago pick n roll (PNR) defense. At ~2:07 you blame Noah for a bad rotation. You also say the Bulls dont want Noah to hedge. That is not completely true. No the Bulls dont want Noah to hedge like teh Spurs used to do where the screeners man would come out real high and play the ball parallel to the sidelines. What they want is for the screeners man to half hedge-half contain.
Once the ball is contained then the man who was guarding the ball orginally doubles down on the ball agressively.
The issue on that play is that Thibadeaus (sp?) PNR defense requires a rotation from the weakside usually to pick up the roll man. In this case that was Boozer. It seems to me that Noah noticed that Boozer got beat by Howard to the basket, so he got caught trying to stop vince from lobbing it to Howard. (trust me I hate to defend Noah as I hate the gators but you misse this one).
@honestgabe88 All I can tell you is that there really isn't a half hedge - either you hedge high-on-the-hip or you don't. And statistics show that whenever you let the dribbler turn the corner on a P & R, the offense scores much more often. That said, they want to contain Dwight Howard and not let him roll hard to the hoop. So they want him to sink - I think that's the grievous mistake you're talking about.
Ummm....... I agree with some of what you were saying and I disagree with most of what you said .... Noah plays good defense ... everyone has some type of problem that you could point out with what they do ..... no one is perfect .... and Boozer will get it together don't worry ... The bulls will be ok .... it is a long season ....
@RushLimbaughsleftear Hey, this is a breakdown of this game. I'm not saying Boozer won't get it together and start playing well - I'm just saying he shouldn't have gotten out there with just a few days of practice against the 2nd best team in the East. Looks like he played better last night already....
@movingon675 It's devastating - he seems to simply be a brittle guy, I guess. That said, I've been hearing rumors of him being traded for almost nothing, and I suspect that a lot of teams could be willing to risk it - I know I would be one of them..
I do love watching these breakdowns but this game wasn't an accurate representation of the bulls, In this game the Bulls sucked! I'm pretty sure Noah didn't even grab 1 rebound which is obviously out of character for him as he is a top 5 rebounder in the league. It was also the Boozer debue which you can tell killed the chemistry as everyone looked out of place and unsure of what they should be doing. Still none the less I enjoyed watching the vid.
@FadeAway23 You are right - not an accurate representation. I know they are better. THe point I wanted to make was that Boozer should've practiced for another week, really got his timing down and his legs back before getting out there against the 2nd best team in the East.
@SwagSoSickRick I'm sorta surprised at that - my memory was that he wasn't anything special on defense, but that he was serviceable - if undersized and disadvantaged.
To be honest... I really don't care who wins or loses... I just want to see Derrick Rose play. Whatever the outcome is, as long as I can see Derrick Roses' amazing skill, my night will be ok.
@2LAX2JFK That's a great way to look at it for this game! Rose is averaging almost 2 assists more per game this year - he's much more efficient and still needs to improve, but is getting better game by game. In 2 years, we might be saying Deron and Chris who?
@fjccommish Ahhh - great question. If your man is setting a screen, you must come out next to his hip - to force the dribbler back into his defender. If you don't hedge/come up and stop the dribbler at the point of the screen, the dribbler can then turn the corner, get a head of steam toward the basket, and put your defense in a heap of trouble.
@fjccommish Maybe if you do it right, you look like a hedge in your garden? LOL
I don't think I can coherently explain it - it's just what everyone calls it. I've never heard set up, but call it what you want, as long as the damn players do it!
@bballbreakdown hey modafucker nick . get ur bitch ass up n do some orlando magic breakdown modafucka ! orlando magic is the fucking shit after the fucking trades . get u white ass up n do the fucking breakdown now
@AJVersatility19 I did try and figure it out, it was hard t make it out. I could swear it was just one number on his jersey, but now I see it's 20. Thanks!
Carlos Boozer played his first game with the Bulls. Any player would be rusty on both ends of the court after not playing in a game in over 7 months. You of all people know that basketball is about timing, rhythm, and flow. Boozer had none of those on either end of the court. It will take time. My guess is that tonight vs. the Celtics you will see the same errors, but in 10-12 days they will be fixed through 5 on 5 practice and playing in more games with the Bulls.
@AndrewHeroJr Maybe you misunderstood me - Of course I understand timing, rhythm, flow - which is why he should've been made to practice for a week or two before returning to the court. As far as I could tell, he hadn't been practicing full bore for very much time at al before this game.
Rose is shooting better than CP3 and Deron from 16-23 feet out so I wouldn't knock his jumper. It's just the way he shoots..and it goes in at a 45%, compared to Deron's 42% and CP3's 44%.
@bballbreakdown Yes, from the field...overall. You showed Rose shooting a 16-23 foot jumper and commented on his form. I gave you the stat for that particular shot.
@gshooting Interesting question - I'm all for running and getting fastbreak points. But if you don't get it in transition, you should set it up and run an offense. Since there are around 70 possessions in a game, I imagine 40 or 50 should be set offense.
It was Boozer's first game since the Jazz/Lakers series. He gets a pass here. To say he should have been practicing more? He had a cast on his shooting hand for 8 weeks, but once removed he was practicing. Games and practice are two totally different things though. He gets a pass here since its his first game in 8 months. We should see some improvement soon.
@ultimatederon Do you know how many practices he had with the team that were full bore, up and down, breaking a sweat scrimmages? He most definitely should practice that way for at least 10 days before playing a game...
@bballbreakdown Well he just had his cast removed not too long ago and the Bulls have been on a road trip for the past two weeks, so Im not sure how much full contact practices he had but it cant be that many. This is basically his preseason though so he is going to look rusty. Just look at Kobe during the preseason and Kobe now. Its night and day.
@Galastin Dear Galastin ..... I would like to thank Utah from the bottom of my heart for allowing us to get Boozer . I couldn't have thought of a better present. I had no idea that people in Utah like people in Chicago so much .
Judging someone's play based on one game is not right , maybe he'll step up the next game maybe he'll be asleep for the next 10 games, and even though Boozer is a good addition to the Bulls, I'd like to see a real big banger down low, yeah Noah does it but it must be someone with some fire and strength which you can find in Boozer, but you'll find at least 2 inches of height missing so you're pretty much stuck with his will to get nasty and some other guys hustling more
@Slamwoo93 I think the point isn't that he's a bad guy or a bad player because he stunk it up the other night. The point is that Bulls management shouldn't have let him get in a real game until he had practiced full bore in multiple, multiple scrimmages. Either he pressured them into letting him back, or the coaches didn't let him get his legs in practice first. Either way, it's a long season and they cost themselves a shot at winning a game by rushing him.
I hated (and hate) the Boozer signing so much. What a waste of money by Chicago. He's undersized and terribly overrated. If you watched him in Utah you know he's not unlike Amare in the sense that he needs to be fed to get the buckets that made Chicago pay him. Chicago was one of my favorite teams and Boozer is probably my least favorite player in the league, yet he ended up in Chicago *facepalm*
once rose gets more confidence and a little more practice with a shooting coach ..he'll be unstoppable .he's the fastest guard in the nba with the ball in my opinion.
not sure about his vision though ...that comes with the system alot of times ..and they're still adjusting to the system
@joekimusic Comparing Rose's scoring to the scoring of a player who is primarily a passer and defender, like Rondo, isn't doing him any favors. You might as well say Dwight Howard's post game is better than Marcus Camby's in an attempt to prove a point.
With that said, Rose's TS% is hardly respectable at 53.6%. He still needs to improve his ability to score outside of the paint to fully become an effective scorer.
@LineRizzleMasta Since you seem like a fan of advanced stats, name another guard with a USG% as high as Rose's, and who's the #1 option of offense. Westbrook's efficiency has suffered with Durant gone, and he's been getting all the defensive attention...Rose has to battle that every night. Notice how people flat-out leave his teammates alone to double him?
@hardinpants Whatever the case may be, whether it's because of the defenses, his teammates, or his inability to shoot the ball well, he has still scored inefficiently by the numbers.
blah blah blah, bulls all the way!!

@Galastin Dear Galastin ..... I would like to thank Utah from the bottom of my heart for allowing us to get Boozer . I couldn't have thought of a better present. I had no idea that people in Utah like people in Chicago so much .
Thanks,
Love , A Bulls fan from Boston

Judging someone's play based on one game is not right , maybe he'll step up the next game maybe he'll be asleep for the next 10 games, and even though Boozer is a good addition to the Bulls, I'd like to see a real big banger down low, yeah Noah does it but it must be someone with some fire and strength which you can find in Boozer, but you'll find at least 2 inches of height missing so you're pretty much stuck with his will to get nasty and some other guys hustling more
Slamwoo93 1 year ago
@Slamwoo93 are you implying that boozer has more fire and strength than Noah?
AJVersatility19 1 year ago
@AJVersatility19 not fire but he's definitely bigger and stronger Noah is just really active and has good hands
Slamwoo93 1 year ago

@chasna Wow - Don't know if Magic can beat the Celtics! And Lakers better hope Bynum can come back and Pau remembers how to play a little defense.

his TS is better than last year.
it's better than rondo too.

@joekimusic Crap - what does TS stand for??
bballbreakdown 1 year ago
@bballbreakdown True shoiting %
once rose gets more confidence and a little more practice with a shooting coach ..he'll be unstoppable .he's the fastest guard in the nba with the ball in my opinion.
not sure about his vision though ...that comes with the system alot of times ..and they're still adjusting to the system
nice video !

LineRizzleMasta 1 year ago
@LineRizzleMasta i didn't say it was respectable i just said it's better than rondos
you're defining the roles as if they are a passer/defender and nothing else
rondo is a passer/defender because..yes he's good at it too but also because he could never score that well.
rondo will never improve his shooting outside the 12 foot area becaue he doesn't have the drive to. his work ethic is horrible.
rose will improve over his years.
joekimusic 1 year ago
@joekimusic Who are you to say Rondo doesn't have good work ethic and Derrick Rose does? Have you been watching them practice behind the scenes?
LineRizzleMasta 1 year ago
@LineRizzleMasta Since you seem like a fan of advanced stats, name another guard with a USG% as high as Rose's, and who's the #1 option of offense. Westbrook's efficiency has suffered with Durant gone, and he's been getting all the defensive attention...Rose has to battle that every night. Notice how people flat-out leave his teammates alone to double him?
hardinpants 1 year ago
@hardinpants Whatever the case may be, whether it's because of the defenses, his teammates, or his inability to shoot the ball well, he has still scored inefficiently by the numbers.

@N0CAPE Wish I didn't have to watch him play. I blame him for disrupting the magic the Magic had in 08
