It's called "cold reading," and James Randi has demonstrated how it works many times. It isn't a new trick. I can do it. I'm not psychic. It isn't hard. And when you combine skillful cold reading with editing, as John Edwards does, it looks particularly impressive. It isn't.
He has a million dollar challenge that they can take if they DO dare to be tested. Randi cannot go and debunk everyone especially the ones like john edward who KNOWS he has no powers and will do everything he can do NOT to be tested by Randi. NONE of these people want to be proven frauds and have their source of income taken away from them!

Your analogy is off. First, a mime's schtick isn't based on making people believe that they can't talk --that's not the point of their act. Second, pretending you're in an invisible box isn't comparable to making people think they've received messages from long-dead relatives, or their leukemia is cured (when it's not) or their abducted children can be found at Address X.

If you bend it a few times it still looks normal its just weaker.
try it your self.
Once you weaken the spoon all it takes is a few more bends to make it break.

I havent done it myself in a while but if i remember it right you can break a fresh spoon by just bending it back and forth enough times.

I hate the fact people lie so blateny. Take Uri. Though i guess you could call that playing his act/part. But when it changes peoples lives like peter poffet(sp)they should be exposed.

i for one like that he thinks and acts absolutely logical, while not completely relying on the "current thruth" science has to offer - which explains thoughts as electrical impulses, that are thereby bound to a certain area which can conduct electricity in an orderly fashion, aka the nervous system(s) (so the "best" thing you could do by "using your powers" is to create a very weak electrical field)
he says that he's ready to believe anything as long as there is a solid proof backing the claims

gary, he did that FOR the camera... he wanted you to catch it. randi was a stage magician for years and could have easily hidden the bending from view but chose not to. you're not proving anything by pointing out you saw him do it. uri geller is a hack.

Randi HAS debunked John Edwards, as have a lot of people.
It's called "cold reading," and James Randi has demonstrated how it works many times. It isn't a new trick. I can do it. I'm not psychic. It isn't hard. And when you combine skillful cold reading with editing, as John Edwards does, it looks particularly impressive. It isn't.

A mime or a magician is a performer, an entertainer, a "psychic" is a fraud, trying to take away the money of innocent people by means of lies and tricksters. That is why it is always usefult to keep a critical perspective at everything. i think critical thinking is simply put what Randi promotes.

Magicians are harmless enough. They call themselves magicians and everyone knows it's a trick. It's psychics, faith healers, televangalists, etc, who charge people a hellava lot of money for nothing. Or worse, making people think they've been healed when they really should still see a doctor.
It's like the difference between Douglas Adams and L. Ron Hubbard. "Hitchhiker's" is harmless enough, everyone knows it's fiction. I won't even get started on the problems caused by L. Ron.

Your analogy is off. First, a mime's schtick isn't based on making people believe that they can't talk --that's not the point of their act. Second, pretending you're in an invisible box isn't comparable to making people think they've received messages from long-dead relatives, or their leukemia is cured (when it's not) or their abducted children can be found at Address X.

Old people getting scammed by someone claiming an unproveavble 'truism' is an american institution. Catholics call it tithing. Some republicans call it Swift Boat Vets and Liberals call it Social Security. Every group does it, its just the upstarts that get 'debunked'. Can Randi prove that Jesus isn't Bush's top advisor? That is one I think people should know!
