Its funny, people want to complain about water-boarding (not to mention that we have only water-boarded 3-4 people over the last 5 years) but they don't contemplate what a socialist government could do to those who disagree with them - see the last 5 minutes of this clip.
I am reading the book and watching the movie simuntaniously, which is very rewarding, getting the literal and the visual.
I got to the part when he was being taken to room 101 and then started to bed, wondering what was in room 101 when it came to me that he would be facing the rats, did anyone else figure this out?
well everyone knows they use your worst fears against you. so i would assume everyone came to the same conclusion. but we all didn't make a big deal out of it.
well...when you asked "did anyone else figure this out" it was like you were making yourself out to be some kind of whiz at deductiion, like sherlock holmes or something. it is like saying...hey, the sun sets in the west guys, did anyone realize this?? um, no..you were the first one Copernicus...*cough*
"Is means only is when I want Is to me Is." Bill Clinton. Many now support what is known as a living constitution. The Constitution would change without regard to what law really is, simply the will of the ruling class. True Freedom comes from being able to say 2+2=4. Truth is unchangeable.
Case in point: at 6:16, Winston is told not to lie. He doesn't, and therefore goes to Room 101 for telling the truth. Was honesty the best policy for Winston? No.
The only true "freedom" we have from despotic authority is in our ability to lie.
Very soon, however, they will know when you are lying.
And THEN (and only then for most of you) you will begin to understand what the loss of "freedom" really means.
Wait, no I take that back. I always imagined Winston screaming his head off when he's in Room 101. It's like he's hardly scared at all. He looks scared, but mostly because they made him look the way he does. You just feel really uncomfortable, but the director really should have made the person scared too.
"If you want a vision of the future Winston, imagine a boot stamping on a human face".... familiar? A little,eh? Chilling but Orwell saw the future quite clear, even though the book was under the influence of the second world war's horror.
But it is also the right to lie whenever its expedient to do so.
Lying is a survival mechanism everyone uses, but everyone lies about using.
Again, if you demand that I always tell you the "truth" (which is always relative to context anyway), you place conditions upon my personal freedom (which is always relative to context anyway).
yes, in some cases, you just have to lie for your own survival or even just so you could save someone else from something, so yeah, guess it works both way's. :)
In Winston and Julia's case though (and anyone the Police caught) it appears they could even read you thoughts, so lying didn't work. LOL i think Winston tried it with O Brien and wound up being tortured even more!
It's something I've always remembered from when I first read '1984', Even though I know that scene's staged you couldn't pay me any amount of money to portray Winston in that scene, I just always wonder how much of that was acting on Hurt's part and if there was any out and out real primal fear? Even if I was assured those were sweet hand raised rats and there was no real opening in that mask, I know I would be having a stroke in Hurt's place.
lol it says something about people that 2 parts of this film were flagged because they showed sex/nudity but those people were indifferant to torture. Excellent book by the way and for those who bring up Hitler the book is more of an attack on the USSR (Orwell was a socialist appalled by what the Communists had done in the name of socialism)
How long have those dictatorships lasted? Over hundreds and hundreds of years? No - because a dictatorship lasts longer than your lifetime doesn't mean it lasts *forever*
Its allready happened, we have a mix of Big Brother, Brave New World and Animal Farm all at once. There is no real freedom left but the freedom to conform. You tube is part of the conspiracy to control you.
why the 60's? has it changed? then my point has been proven. Fact is, there has really been no totalitarian form of government, for any long period of time. The pride of one man or group of men eventually brings the downfall of such regimes- they can't stay "pure".
the result, can perhaps be best seen in WWII: the pride of one man added to a totalitarian govn't precipitated in the worst conflict ever in human history.
yes but you could also say the pride of that one man, and his arrogance, brought about his own downfall. had he left more to his well skilled and talented politicans and generals, he would have been more successful. He contributed to his own downfall (what made him think he knew more about conducting warfare than Rommel?)
EXCELLENT social satire... along with animal farm.... the only problem with Orwe'll's "prophetic vision" was that it didn't take into account the darkest realm of the human spirit.. selfish greed... which (as history proved) which would (and did) tear apart any such totalitarian government.
I guess you guys haven't watched "ONE NATION UNDER SIEGED" or "ORWELL ROLLS IN HIS GRAVE" or "The Corporation" in order for some peeps to get a better sense what Orwell was warning us about the future.
The rights to George Orwell's novel 1984 -- the inspiration for an Apple computer ad pirated by a Barack Obama supporter who remodeled it into an attack on Hillary Rodham Clinton -- are owned by Gina Rosenblum, a West Rogers Park resident who is president of Rosenblum Productions Inc.
I used to live in a communist country and although I was much too young to understand at the time, I understood sometime later why my parents were whispering when they were talking about 'the dictator', and why they avoided to do so when we were there. George Orwell was a very wise man who managed to foresee the greed of some people hidden in this utopic ideology - communism. And indeed, it is a book for those who can truly understand it, otherwise it's a boring version of the matrix...
I wouldn't say so... I think that he believed what everyone else believed, that is that communism is a utopy - it's a very good idea that will never be put in practice the right way. Why? Well, read the book again. It's because there will always be this group of persons that is hungry for power. That's the same principle standing behind "Animal Farm". So was he against communism? I really think he was.
A friend of mine was arrested cause she is a Falun Gong member. They sentenced her to a "re-education through labor camp" in Bejing. Eventually we got her out. When she returned to Germany she exposed the torture she suffered. I asked her if they they made her sign the "confession". Her physical wounds are healing... but she never seemed to forgive herself for letting them break her will.
Yes, your library has this, but here in America we're hungry for programs such as this. Not everyone can just pop over to their local library and borrow a copy.
I would just love to see Mel Gibson in the final scene in Room 101..."FREEEEEEDOOOOOOOOOMMMMMM!!!!!!" as the rats chew out his face. XD
Either that, or "THIS IS SPARTAAAAAAA!!!"

The true meaning behind the book, applies to power...
Power being a thing that in are human nature, we strive for. A thing that many believe will bring them happieness...
This book and movie, centers on the human struggle for exsitence.
The human struggle of ideals and beliefs.
Which is a war that can never be won, and can never be lost, yet continues eternal.
