Gary Busey flew into Lubbock, Texas shortly after the movie was released. He was met by Buddy Holly's friends and relatives. They all told him the same thing:
The movie sucked, but YOU were Buddy, and then embraced him.
I remember about a year after the film was released it hit a budget theater a friend managed, so I saw it 3 or 4 times while it played there for about a month. Good-sized and enthusiastic crowds, who clapped at the end. Good times....

To be honest I actually prefer Gary Busey's cover of Words of Love to Buddy Holly's Version.
