I don't know where those of you live who have been bothered by horses being abandoned near/on your property. In the desert southwest however, it's been learned that the hundreds of horses that have been turning up there were refused at the border by the Mexican slaughter plants, and the killers just turned them loose to live or die. Kill-buyers have no mercy for anything - human OR equine.

Too many humans believe we have dominion over animals and carry no guilt to killing for personal gain. I agree with onekinkstar...breeders should be blamed for the problem...to many people want an animal and then end up getting rid of it and the excuses are unreal and always the same..there are enough animals in this world that need love and a good home...why make more is my question

Something needs to be said about the BREEDERS too - the start of the problems. There are so many horses used and abuse, in need of good homes and safe care, with good foods . . . Just like dogs and cats, WHY aren't the breeders blamed with some of the responsibility?

@onekinkstar That's alright. I tend to like to point stuff like that out because my family are breeders. True we breed for the market and only for the market. (four foals last year) Manage to sell all of the stock,basic training but then we have a stringent policy for selling. If you don't meet our criteria, we won't sell.

I just dislike the whole grouping aspect, it makes it seem like you are pointing at me and saying, 'YOU'RE at fault!!!' I know you aren't doing so.

The topic has much attention here now because a new bill was signed for horses to be slaughtered here, versus shipping to Canada or Mexico. Reading of racehorses killed, mistreated, overbred, abused - it's all just a mess. Humans are not all kind. Stopping wrong should be easier!

Cargill's plant (spelling?) is the place (I think) that allowed Lisa Ling to come in and witness their operations for the Oprah show a few years ago. She watched some of the slaughters, without cameras, but was allowed full access everywhere else for filming. They are to be commended for at least making an effort to do better.

The only reason the increase horses going to slaughter is because not only the economy, but fuel prices of diesel run over $4.00 a gallon and most horses comes from the US. So travel expenses increases the number of horses too. Auctioneers needs the kill buyer in these hard times not because of unwanted horses but sales are down at auctions sales are down for cars, trucks, and homes etc.. So what makes horse sales at auction any different. Horse slaughter promotes abuse and rewards criminals

I've lost all respect for the veterinary medical profession. They are paid to watch animals live or die. They get paid either way. The OSPCA found two veterinarians that asserted keeping a horse in a garage was suitable and adequate. SubStandards are the new normal. The CFIA has lots of pretty words, but zero actions.

@BehindTheLiesIsTruth One doesn't have to be a vegan to object to wanton cruelty. Actually, as Temple Grandin has said herself, there is as yet no known humane way to slaughter horses. She said it should stop until a humane way is found - IF it's ever found.

Another problem with US horses is that they aren't raised a food animals and they do not meet the food safety standards in the US, Canada, Mexico or the EU. NO ONE should be eating horses from the United States!

One paragraph of the ALC report, which noted – “She (Grandin) described herself as “neutral” on the issue of whether to ban horse slaughter for human consumption.”

She is not saying shut it down, she is not getting involved on the issue period.

The has stated that there was at present no humane way to slaughter horses and it should not continue until there IS a humane way of doing it. People just need to open their eyes and actually think about it before just jumping into it, then after we have the humane slaughter down pat we can work on phasing it out by fixing all of the other problems. The back yard breeding, the people buying a horse just becuase. Once we fix all of those, horse slaughter won't be necessary.

@MorganLver Its funny, really a .33 bullet to my horse's head after she broke her leg was humane. She died instantly. Our old stud grew skinny and we couldn't keep any weight on him. A .33 bullet put him out of his misery humanely. But yet, this process can't be applied to a slaughter plant? If shooting a horse out in the back pasture with a .33 bullet is humane, why can't it be in the slaughter facility.

@BehindTheLiesIsTruth Because there is such a chaotic atmosphere in an assembly line commercial slaughter setting. Horses can see and smell what is going on. They can see other horses strung up and bleeding out.They don't usually use guns in slaughter plants. They use the captive bolt which is totally unacceptable with any equid because it's very ineffective for them. A slaughter plant is a FAR cry from being in a quiet home atmosphere in familiar surroundings.

@MorganLver Actually, I really hate to disagree but the chute line isn't straight. It is illegal to have the kill room in full view of the holding pens. There is a major curve from the holding pens to the kill box, preventing the other horses from seeing what is going on. If you watch the horse slaughter videos that curve and the separation is evident. As for the smells, they are supposed to have a venting system to get rid of it but they rarely do.

While they do have some understanding of their surroundings, a horse does not have the thought process to comprehend what is going on in the slaughter house. They react to primal feelings, such as fear, that another horse exhibits but they are not aware that their surroundings are dangerous to them. They feed off one another, their instincts are easily read by one another.

However, they can understand that is means danger You missed research articles in The Horse. Horses are able to conceptualize, and then use that knowledge in a different situation - but same CONCEPT - a year later. They can also count. Not just the difference between 1 and more than one, but actually count the number of items up to 8 or so.

@MorganLver I've worked with horses my entire life. Listening to their body language is just second nature to me. I know what every little twitch, every head swivel/ear swivel, every stomp and tail swish, means. I know when a horse is stressed, curious, scared, angry, or content. For me it is like night and day but a lot of the horse's emotions are easily mixed up. The stressed and scared ones in particular. I wish I could make a video to show what each horse emotion looks like.

Then I have to pay for the disposal, burial, and/or cremation of the carcasses and deal with the predators that have realized horses sure are tasty, while we are at it, so are sheep and goats! There were extenuating circumstances and we could neither shoot them on our property nor could we get the vet to come out. SO we put them into the trailer and took them to the plant. We lost money when we did so.

You've never had to deal with a sheep leaving its newborn lamb in the middle of no where because they are are too stupid to clean the lamb off or to stay with it. We've lost many lambs because the ewes are completely stupid. We have to separate the ewes from the herd with their lambs for three days so they will actually bond with them. Otherwise they leave them somewhere and don't care. I have never met a more stupid animal.

The predators come for the dead horse then stay and kill our sheep and goats, hence, cutting into our profits. After we educate owners, regulate breeding and sales then slaughter will be phased out completely. that is what I wish for but until the education becomes prevalent slaughter needs to be there, just until the other problems are fixed. Then it can go to hell.
