  • As you say tolerance is different in everybody. I drink 4 - 6 expressos a day and haven't experienced any negative side effects that you describe. I do however share your concern for artificially introduced caffiene in "energy drinks" with many times larger doses than traditional colas. I have seen famillies giving very young children this stuff to drink.

  • If you can quit for a week and suffer no withdrawal symptoms, then I'll agree with you.

    If you get withdrawal symptoms, or are unable to muster the will to test your ability to exist without it, then you have, at the minimum, a drug dependency. You may even be fully addicted to the drug.

    Other side-effects aren't always easy to spot in yourself, particularly psychoactive effects. I'd be cautious about concluding that the drug is harmless to you, DAD.

  • I have been addicted to coca for 3 years. Used to drink it after having breakfast and If I didn't drink it in the morning my heart would start beating faster, I would start to feel pressure in my hands plus headaches, too much Coke would lead to more headaches.

    I thought there was something wrong with my eyes, however it was the caffeine causing the blurred vision in the distance. Gone cold turkey for 2 months now; my vision has improved and all symptoms have vanished. I feel free at la

    Help spread the word? There's still a ton of disinformation out there from the food, beverage and pharmaceutical industry, and new victims are falling into addiction every day.

  • If caffeine causes headaches why is it that I can get rid of a headache by drinking a diet coke?

  • Josh, the drug produces short-term effects which are different from its long-term effects.

    In the short term, caffeine dilates blood vessels, particularly in the brain. This can ease the pain of a headache, and in fact, caffeine has been used for decades as a fast-acting pain reliever (Excedrin, among others).

    The longer-term effects aren't as well understood, but may have to do with some kind of rebound effect. After short-term dilation, we may be getting blood vessel constriction.

  • What it amounts to is that you can end up relying on caffeine to keep your blood vessels dilated, in order to avoid the pain that comes if you don't keep consuming it regularly. This is in addition to the cravings you get with most any addictive drug, including caffeine.

    What it all means is that the drug is perfect for hooking you on food and beverage products. It increases sales..

    Most people don't remember that Coca-Cola once had cocaine in it. Caffeine was a calculated replacement.

  • You rock. Many of the things you mentioned described me. Though many people have said to me, "Oh that's not because of caffeine, it's just who you are." That was not good enough for me to accept so I decided to quit. The hardest part is when people keep saying it's good for you, you're blood type, etc. Right now I'm slowly getting off. The quality of my life keeps getting better every day and I really appreciate your advice.

  • For most people, belief is attained through repetition. If they hear something often enough, they will conclude it is true.

    This is why advertising (and propaganda, too) is so effective. Monied interests can convince most people of anything. Anything at all. And people will repeat it, because they believe it. The effect of advertising is multiplied by our gullibility.

    I'm glad you have decided to end your gullibility. it's a good move for your health and your happiness.

  • @Urgelt I have a personal question, do you know anything about ocular migraines (the ones with visual disturbances?) Are they the type you suffered from? I want to believe I can live without caffeine.

  • Most of my migraines did not come with visual disturbances, but some did. It is a variation not explained well by medical science at this point in time.

    I haven't heard of any studies which show that "Ocular" and "Non-Ocular" migraines are meaningful diagnostic or treatment categories. For now, they're all migraines.

    I'm pretty certain that caffeine was the primary cause of my migraines. But there are probably other causes, too. Your mileage may vary.

  • Different people react in different ways to a drug. Genetics, body weight, how much food is in your stomach and intestines and what the food is, how much water is in you, other drugs you are taking, how active you are and whether you are perspiring, all sorts of things can change the physiological activity of a drug.

    That's the reason that caffeine intoxication is diagnosed by symptoms, not by amounts of the drug consumed.

  • It's true that coffee delivers some benefit along with its dose of highly-addictive, psychoactive drug. The *context* of that truth has been distorted; the overall impression left in your mind is false: "coffee is good for you."

    Likely, coca leaves have anticancer properties. But I wouldn't recommend running out to lay in a supply of that, either. Get your anticancer substances from safer sources.

  • The food industry has championed coffee's possession of anticancer substances, and gotten the media to play the story aggressively and repeatedly. The impression they are leaving in our minds is that coffee is somehow special and unique in its anticancer properties.

    Coffee's properties only look good in comparison to highly-industrialized foods and beverages which lack them. And if you are eating an industrialized diet, drinking coffee won't do nearly enough to compensate.

    A very great many plant foods, teas and even coffee have nutritive properties, including the provision of substances with anti-cancer properties.

    The rise in cancer tracks not only the rise in industrial production of toxins, but also the switch to industrially-processed foods which mostly lack these substances. More toxic exposure, less protection from diet = more cancer.

  • Adenosine receptor antagonists, esp. at the A2A sites, make us crave GABA-a agonists. Valerian or Skullcap? Valium or alcohol? Pick your poison. I grew up with coffee. I started drinking coffee at age 6. YES, SIX YEARS OLD. My dad condoned it. I ordered it in restaraunts, and the waiter would give it to my mom. She would say, "No, it's his", while pointing to me. It was hilarious. Urgelt, YOU ROCK!
  • I didn't start quite that young. But by the time I reached college, I was swilling caffeinated soft drinks. Coffee came later for me, when I entered the work force.

    The information environment in which I was raised treated caffeine as harmless. So my guard was down. And when caffeine-produced symptoms emerged, doctors could not tell me what was causing them. They bought the whole "harmless" story, too.

    We need to reshape the information environment... one person at a time, if need be.

    I also believe that caffeine is even much more addicting than cocaine. Wasn't cocaine (coca) replaced by caffeine by the beverage industry in 19323, just at the offset of the Great Depression? (pun intended)

  • I haven't seen any convincing scientific basis for ranking the addictivity of various drugs.

    Which leaves me to form a subjective - and cautious - opinion. I think caffeine is in the same ballpark as cocaine, so far as addictivity goes. It's very, very addictive.

  • Incidentally, there are reports that Coca-cola continues to use cocaine leaves to flavor the syrup used in their signature product. According to these reports, drug alkaloids are first extracted from the leaves for resale on the medical market, then the depleted leaves are used in soft drink syrup manufacturing.

    I have no idea if it's true. It sounds a bit apocryphal.

    True or not, it's water that has been sugared and drugged. Best to avoid it.

  • What's your take on the recent findings that coffee can reduce your risk of Alzhimer's, Parkinson's and diabetes, along with a number of other health problems.

    I suspect it's a mixed bag, but do you still come down on the no coffee is better for you side of the fence?

  • The study you're citing uses methods which are considered to be the weakest in science: population surveys. There is no light shed on the physiological mechanism by which the correlations appear.

    You know it's an industry-funded study when there are no negative health results reported, only positive.

    I don't ascribe much credibility to industry-funded studies. Which does not mean that there might not be some benefits to coffee, consumed in moderation.

  • One thing to keep in mind is that in any population survey of this type, many, many of the people surveyed are consuming industrial foods devoid of adequate nutrients. The bodies of such people are starved for micronutrients, especially antioxidants.

    Antioxidants are found in many healthy foods and teas, not just coffee.

    My guess is that a person with a healthy diet won't get much benefit from consuming coffee - his nutritional needs are already met.

  • Caffeine is just a simple neurotransmitter inhibitor .

    There's ton's of organic chemicals like this out there.

    Tea have chemicals, which also inhibit the receptors on the post synaptic membrane.

    Caffeine isn't dangerous. Doesn't effect your lifestyle. Yeah, If you exercise a lot, then caffeine is a +.

    But if you sit on your backside all day, then obviously you're going to increase your LDHs.

  • My dads wife have tried to quit drinking coffee which led to severe headaches for 4 days before she started drinking it again and then everything was "fine". Why are you protecting this poison? It's an addictive drug. Venom created by plants for their own protection.

  • Poison you say? It's poison if you overdose on it. If you consume it -normally-, yeah, it's fine.

    I drink caffeine on, and off. During my coursework deadline, I've exceeded the normal "200mg" dose per day, just for me to keep awake.

    I didn't suffer any headaches and such. Do you know why? Because I consumed it via pills, means I'm not cutting water intake when I stop.

    People who drink caffeine, and stop drinking it, suffer headaches because their water intake has been reduced!

  • Interesting theory. Probably not true.

    Caffeine dilates blood vessels in the brain and reduces blood pressure there. If you are addicted to a large daily dose, your body normalizes this effect: it compensates by altering other blood pressure controls so the blood pressure doesn't fall too far and produce unconsciousness.

    Suddenly remove the caffeine, and the vessels constrict. Instant head pain. Drinking lots of water will not prevent it.

  • Over the years I've got off coffee, black tea and Coke. Now I just have white tea, which I absolutely love... but even the small amount of caffeine in white tea is too much. Now that I know it's nature's insecticide and that it's one of the food industry's nasty little tricks, I'm going to wean myself off it.

  • The other equally dangerous substances in common coffee drinks are PASTEURISED MILK and SUGAR and worst of all ARTIFICIAL SWEETENERs (SPLENDA EQUAL ETC). Pasteurised/homogenised/UHT milks do more harm than good. google "real milk" for more info

  • I'd go so far as to say that human tolerance of milk past young childhood is somewhat iffy. We're not well adapted to the stuff. It's a recent mutation (10,000 years, roughly).

    Milk is a rich source of nutrients, but there's a question as to how well we can actually digest them. Tossing in industrial heat processing to chemically alter milk just makes me more nervous.

  • Caffeine is also called "the last legal drug".

    As with all stimulants, every time you drink caffeine, you affect your heart function, alter vascular flow, and overstimulate digestive and glandular activity. Anytime you manipulate your body in any way, you end up throwing off normal energy balance, which can cause organ system failure and glandular meltdown. the regular use of caffeine or any material that speeds up your body function will ultimately slow it down

  • Caffeine is a carcinogen. There aren't any safe levels of carcinogens; even slight exposure will at least slightly elevate your risk.

    It's also psychoactive, but the effects vary considerably from person to person. A potent mood alteration may be noticeable in some people and absent in others.

    Some people prone to stomach disorders may exacerbate them with even low doses of caffeine.

  • Many of those side effects you mention are dose-dependent- they'd require many, many cups of coffee to create.

  • It varies considerably from person to person as to what that dose is, Tym.

    In any event, I'm speaking as a person who experienced caffeine intoxication, and I've corresponded with others who have had the same experiences. The dosages are attainable.

  • A few years back, I (very stupidly) decided to see how much caffeine I could take. Four cups of coffee and a 16oz energy drink later, I was experiencing pretty much every side-effect listed in the vid. Do most people normally have that much? Of course not. But that doesn't make listing the effects any less valuable.

  • As of two days ago, I quit coffee cold turkey. I was a heavy coffee drinker. Even now I am experiencing headaches and sluggishness (seems like it anyway). But I will stick it out.

  • I remember well, it's not easy. I quit cold turkey, too. Felt it necessary, since I was desperate to rid myself of migraines and I was willing to try anything. (Only in hindsight did I know for certain that caffeine was the cause.)

    If cold turkey doesn't work, don't despair. Try a slower, phased approach using tea.

  • Do they? Well, I did, every day for years. I think there are others who drink as much.

    It's worth noting that outside of a laboratory, we're much more able to detect short-term changes than long-term ones. Caffeine does take a toll in the longer term, but it's much harder to make the connection between it and our symptoms.

  • I downed a redbull, popped 5 max strength no-doz (200mg ea.) and downed a second redbull. was throwing up all the next day. if I drank a glass of water it would come up in less than 5 minutes, same with a bowl of chicken noodle soup or anything else I tried to put down. physically the most miserable day of my life, and yet it didn't stop me from over using caffeine, just very cautious about how much now. I don't remember hallucinating, but maybe I was and just didn't know it; had all the others.

  • That happens when you go cold turkey. My aunt gets that too.

  • When I drink stuff with caffeine, I usually make sure its something that has a lot of it, in hope that maybe I'll get least some effect. For some reason I just dont get buzzed at all, except for maybe a placebo effect. I dont feel a difference between caf and decaf. For that reason I mainly drink various coffee drinks for the flavor, once every few days or so.

  • That's how it was for me when I was younger. And that's why I felt safe consuming more of the stuff.  It didn't seem to affect my metabolism much. I didn't have any trouble sleeping, even.

    But it's got a lot of potential side-effects, and they eventually bite if you drink enough.

    A cup every few days probably won't hurt you. I was drinking 20 times as much. Not smart.

  • You wouldn't happen to have ADD/ADHD, would you? There have been several studies that show that caffeine has no effect on people with ADD or ADHD.

    Caffeine is addictive and carcinogenic, besides being psychoactive. The drug throws too many bullets for anyone to be immune to all of them.

  • Caffeine is certainly not the only cause of headaches, granted. I hope you can figure out what's behind yours.

    An unresolved health problem like that is sometimes benefitted by dietary improvement. See the HE Link Video for ideas.

    I have not troubled to hide the fact that I take prescription medications and dietary supplements.

  • The companies most guilty of using caffeine as a cash cow for farming millions of dollars are coffee companies, particularly Starbucks. Combine high amounts of sugar and caffeine in 5 dollar drinks, and it's no wonder people come back every single morning despite recognizing that their addiction is more costly (and possibly more harmful) than smoking.   • I still occasionally have a mug of tea with caffeine. Green tea is good for you. But moderation smart. In large doses, caffeine is bad stuff!

  • I read that caffeine free soft drinks still have trace amounts of caffeine. The FDA allows companies to call something caffeine free if it has something like less than 1% of caffeine. Yet, it can still have caffeine in it. That is what I read on the net somewhere.

    So, what is your view on these so-called caffeine free soft drinks?

    Some people think that diet sodas are "bad" also. I never like sugar sodas. However, I find it really hard to get off the DIET soda. UGH!

    In low amounts it's probably not very harmful; a cup of green tea or even coffee once a day might be tolerated by many people quite well. But it's definitely addictive and harsh in large amounts.

  • Well yes, I understand that. See, the mentality with one of my coworkers is, "the more milograms of caffeine, the better". I'm just more cautious now of drinks that purposely try to provide 'energy'and can be addicting.

  • Good question. If formaldehyde is used to decaffeinate it, I'd steer clear, for sure. I've read there are other, safer methods, but it might be tough to figure out which method is used on which tea. It's not labeled.

    I drink normal tea and herbal teas, so it doesn't come up in my daily habits.

  • A great video and thanks for making it. I'm a hard core caffeine addict. I even take it in pill form in order to help speed the effects of tylenol when I have a headache. This video has seriously made me rethink my stance on the use of caffeine.

  • Since my almost total removal of caffine from my diet I've noticed my mental health disorders have been more controlable. I'm not saying caffine was the cause but I suspect it played a part. I never new there was a corrilation thank you so much for bringing this to my attention.

  • I use to drink anywhere from 10 to 20 cups of coffee a day. Now that I've cut back (using cereal coffee as "placebo") I only drink one a day. The funny thing? My body has grown intolerant. If I drink more than one, I get huge panick attacks. Before this, I never realized how potent this drug is.

  • Ijust woke up a bit ago and am about to watch your follow-up vid. Caffeine/coffee is the first thing on my mind when I wake up, and I drink it all day long at work. It won't b easy to cut down and eventually get off of it. Just wanted to thank you for making these videos and hopefully the one I'm about to watch now will be helpful as well.

  • Well, this was a really good video. Around spring, I started to drink LOTS of coffee and other caffienated beverages again. Since then I've had most of the negetive symtoms you read. :/ For about three months now I've been stuck being awake 19-21 hours a day everyday. It's pretty horrible. >_<

  • I've been trying to cut back on my green tea intake. I'm down to about 3 glasses (4-5 cups) a day. Getting there.

  • Did you start from a more serious addiction, Copperbat? Coffee or soft drinks?

    I haven't personally tried ramping down using green tea, but it seems a reasonable strategy to me.

  • I used to drink a lot of iced black tea. I did drink more soft drinks many years ago, but only one or two per week now. I drink two or three cups of coffee on sunday, but mostly I like iced green tea. I notice if I drink too much of it, I get heartburn.

  • Studies have also shown that kids who drink pop/take caffeine pills to study do worse than those who don't, because the results need to be recreated during the tests they studied for in order to be affective. I eat peppermints, which are also good for calming your stomach down. Thanks for this video. :)

  • True. Everything is toxic if too much is consumed.

    It's very hard to kill yourself by drinking coffee or coke. Assuming a 10 hour half life, which is unusual but not impossible, you'd need roughly 180 cups of coffee over 10 hours to die. But caffeine may incite risky behavior at lower doses... and that can be just as fatal.

    Your analogy is apt. The pyrethrins in Raid are about as toxic as aspirin... which is actually fairly toxic, you don't want to consume a large amount, for sure. I suspect Caffeine is actually worse in equivalent concentrations, but I don't have data to back up that assertion.

  • I have been trying to quite coffee for several years. I always fall of the wagon. I drink 2 two liter bottles of Diet Coke too. A lot less than others I know, but I'd still love to stop. Do you drink liquids with caffine?

  • Just tea now, 2 cups of green, black or white per day max. Many days I take in no caffeine. The rest of what I drink is herbal teas, water, and a bit of soy milk once in a while.

    I quit cold turkey to end the addiction. I'm not sure if that's better than ramping down with teas.
