  • I like how he uses a glove for the left hand... but handles the parts with his ungloved right hand... lol

  • yay some deatail finally!

    it was REALLLY lacking it

  • hmm ive been wondering about this for while and ive been trying to guess the thinner to paint ratio, how thin is this stuff really? prety much ive been trying to mock this idea with my gunpla here lately, with acrylic paints and thinner. could you perhaps give me a bit help here?

  • Looking good! How were you able to paint the wings yet still keep them transparent? What did you use to do so?

  • Gracias, Senior crapmunky99 ^^

I first painted the thick veins with acrylic skin color and then used a custom mixed acrylic wash to alter the color of the wings and give emphasis to the tiny veins. Because of the fact that I only used this inking technique only small amount of paint dried on the even areas and they stayed translucent.

  • Senior crapmunky! xD Ok, thanks for the tip. I've wanted to try something interesting with clear/translucent parts, but didn't know if it would stay that way afterwards. Now, knowing how you did it, I'm thinking my original idea probably wouldn't have worked, so I'll either have to deal with the parts no longer being translucent, or I'll have to take a different approach. Thanks again!

  • Pre-colored transparent plastic is troublesome. You can change the color with transparent colors but the resulting color is always a mixture of the applied and the original.

It would have been impossible to change the wings color to transparent lilac or pink for instance (yellow is complementary).

But I suspect you know that. What was your original idea? Mind telling?

  • I had thought of using a translucent neon on beam blades and other such things. That way, the blade would stay clear (relatively) but have the blacklight effect too. I had a feeling that only "like" colors will work together. Orange or red would work with pink blades, but not green or something "colder" like that. Although, I imagine one could create a dark color by mixing non-complementary colors together (neon blue paint on a pink blade) so that it's a dark color that glows under blacklight...

  • That should work. Try mixing marker ink with future floor acrylics (like I did in one of the Alex videos) and try it out (perhaps first on the transparent tree).

You could even create a black transparent color that glows white under uv-light if you mix many different colors. If you mix red green and blue in equal quantities it should result in black (substractive color) and glow white (additive color).

    The mixing is critical though...

  • Actually, I recently purchased some FFA and neon color gel-pens. I've been experimenting with it, but I'm finding it hard to work with. I may just be mixing it too thin, but if I make it too thick, it loses translucence. I'll keep experimenting, and see if I can get it to balance. But, that "neon black" idea really sounds cool, and I think I'm going to give it a try in the near future. If it does work, I'll be sure to post a video of it. Thanks again!

  • Oh wow. IT's all coming together now!

I originally thought the blue you were using was too bright - little did I know you were going to use a wash on top. Now that's nice!! ^_^

  • The light is a cool idea, well done. This model reminds me of guyver, don't you think so.looking good, you get the five star treatment.

  • Didn't know Guyver until now ^^

    Thanks!

  • hmmm gonna try the citadel washes...nice technique

  • I really want to see how you do your dry brushing.

  • I'd like to see some drybrushing :D, it would really help me , because i have no idea how to do it :P

  • can't wait till next part!

  • Wow I never seen this kit before. looks really good. nice work on the inking washing, I'll have to try that one day!

  • I also found a cheap double action airbrush (14.99) on ebay, but it doesn't come with any accessories like the hose attachments and *(paint tank?)* glass bottle thingamajig. Any idea of where to get this or would I have to search at a local hobby and craft store for stuff like this?

  • Sorry. Dunno.

I'm very unknowledgeble on this topic.

  • Well I think I am going to get the single action one get used to spraying some more and then get double action once I am pro at single action. I have to walk before I can run. Also I only want to airbrush huge areas of armour and I will hand paint the eyes and stuff like that.

I will also have all of the accessories by then.

  • I would like to see some dry brushing next video.

Wow, you pointed out my mistake in the video before I was even going to talk about it in the comment box! It must have looked pretty bad. Yeah, I messed up a lot of my model kits because of that. Worst of all, I made my wash inconsistent when I applying it. It isn't the same as normal paint is it because it is so runny? I will have to be sure to rub it off a bit because I only want a bit of shading. The guys at GW told me to paint over wash. :0

  • It was just noticile in your video. Don't know how the effect is when seen with bare eyes. Getting a consistent wash was one of the trouble I got while doing this video, too. Compare the two wings...bleh

Jeah these ppl at GW. They are pros at miniture painting and when doing that they use the wash to reach areas where the brush cant reach. So they do it before painting the rest. But imho that is useless at bigger scales.

BTW: Try searching for pre-shading. Nice AB technique ^^

  • Yeah by no means am I questioning their knowledge in there. Those guys have helped me so much it is unreal. I even see them buying models from the same store that they work with their paycheck which shows love for job. I just wish they didn't have commission so they were a little more open minded to non-citadel products when talking to you.

They gave me the "look" like "OMG you loser, I have kids to feed ya know?" when I mentioned using tamiya.

  • I know what you mean. The owner of the GW I went to last week was trying everything to get me into playing. When I mentioned that I build Ci-Fi-models and just want to see what tools and paints they've got he pointed me to the WH40k models. When seeing the prices I hastly left that region of the shop.

I think of the analogy to a grass dealer who smokes his own stuff. That's counterproductive and won't end well. I'm exaggerating a bit ^^

  • Crushed pastels mixed with water are great for shadowing, and much cost efficient than the method you used I think...since you are adding highlights on the edges.

Thin ink washes are advisable only on panel lines.

Still I do think you did a good job as always.

  • I'll try to get my hands on some pastels. I really forgot that I wanted to buy them. I'll try mixung them with water.

    Thanks ^^

  • Just find a proper ratio your more comfortable with, I usually do mine 2 parts of crushed pastels mixed with 1/2 water. The outcome mixture would turn out all goey and just smudge it to the edges.

By the way, did you also attach a switch for the LED on the cockpit?
