I remember seeing Robin play many times for Cardiff in my childhood and he was a superb talent. I was by the players entrance when the famous incident of him travelling on a platform ticket and he was arrested but he couldnt care less. Thanks for the memory Robin, you were a real star.
I was in the Tilehurst End behind the goal at that game, I think I was about 12. In the warmup before the game he missed the goal and the ball hit me in the face. He jumped the wall onto the terrace to make sure I was alright, and when iIsaid I was fine he gave me a kiss!
God - I would love to see more of the games of that era involving Robin Friday. A legend and I was lucky enough to be at that game against Tranmere (important in its own right because we were both promotion contenders that year). The goal was breathtaking. I think Clive Thomas (ref of the game) described it as the best he had ever seen and he reffed World Cups!
Thanks, whoever posted this. It's a shame that "The" goal wasn't recorded on film. I was also lucky enough to witness it from right behind the goal. The funny thing was, the moment the ball reached Robin you just knew it was going to be a goal. And the referee (Clive Thomas, I believe) clutched his head in disbelief, it was that good. Robin Friday, George Best, Rodney Marsh...they don't make 'em like that anymore.
I WAS at the Tranmere game. We didn't know about his drinking or drugs then; well kept away from the newspapers. What ball possession skills - like a magnet! In the Tranmere game Friday unleashed what for me was the best goal I have EVER seen. The way he chested the ball, swivelled, & unleashing such a ferocious shot (not even looking). A genius moment with both force & tenderness. A shame when he left for Cardiff. Surely he would have been a great England star if he'd controlled himself.
There should be some sort of computer simulation of Friday's goal against Tranmere, using people's account who were lucky enough to see it. So talked about is that goal I think wed all like to see it. Still nice to see footage of him, I wonder if theres anymore on film
