Probably some good info in all this, but a word of caution: Notice how Dennet switches from simple referents and easy observations to complex metaphors as if the move requires no explanation. Also notice his use of adjectives and adverbs. This kind of textual analysis is helpful in sniffing out bias or agenda. I think if the entire system is explained with simple referents and plain adjectives and adverbs distinctions tend to blur, and conclusions become biased judgements. Oh well.

i agree, but don't think the work suffers too much, judged in the context of other work on the subject.

bias is going to rear its head on any subject except (sometimes not even) in absolute sciences(mathematics for example, no amount of bias is ever going to change 1+1 into anything but 2)

Yes, dennet's take is similar to others in that particular line of explanation, which requires jumping from simple bits to what is declared with complex metaphors wout the establishment of the many links that would have to exist in those jumps. Such jumping then gives the appearance of interpreting a relatively few facts to fit a preconcieved notion. Stories! Shall we explain the disaapearence of Harrappa with our stories??
