Good LP! One piece of advice I have is this: For those blob enemies who emerge from the ground (often seen in the swamp palace), the red enemies who split into 2 upon getting hit (and can electrocute you if you hit them while they're flashing), you can one-hit kill them with the hookshot. That's right; the hookshot does more than simply freeze enemies, it can directly deal damage in many cases.
I just found the "Official Zelda Timeline" translation, and it says "Ganon is Revived" on it more times than I think there're Zelda games. :( So confused.
@ 2:20 - They're all identical, even the ones with green hair?
I agree with you on the 3D aspect of the 3DS. Though, if you're not seeing it right, make sure you're holding the unit straight. If you're off by even a small angle, it will become distorted. I think the 3D visuals in Ocarina of Time make the cutscenes/FMVs look amazing, but it's tough to play with it like that.
I completely agree with your statement on the 3DS. I mean, the best improvement on it from the DS is the analog stick. The 3D only works when you aren't moving, meaning travel doesn't work, and its okay at best. Still a great system though.
As far as Link's wish is concerned, I thought he wished that everything would be back to the way it was BEFORE Ganon/Aganahim reared his/their ugly head/heads, thus restoring the lives of all those who died as a result of the evil. Why? Well, when you turn into a tree, you don't typically come back to life from that... at least not without some sort of magical aid.
@skyrunner14 That's what I had believed as well, I don't know if that was a good idea since if his wish was to undo everything wouldn't Ganon still be alive?
Zelda and the triforce of wisdom had a mystical bond. She was able to break up it because of the bond. HCBailly you are epic. This was a great lp. The Zelda time line as far as I can tell. Is stand alone for each game except the ones that are linked. Zelda1 Links Awaking, Zelda 2 all linked. Everything else is mostly stand alone. Link to the past is a stand alone
When a system first comes out, the professed features are never that top notch. You usually have to give it a while before it really gets neat and cool features.
Overall, I'd have to give the game 10/10. Yeah, the plot isn't really there, but I don't think the game NEEDED it. I think the gameplay was completely amazing, and the puzzles and items are perfect, and I can't think of hardly any games that are better than this one... so I think it definitely deserves a 10/10.
I mean, Mega Man X didn't have much of a plot either, and that game is still a 10/10 too. I think some games can still be perfect even without a large plot in them.
Hey HCBailly, have you ever played (or attempted to play) Cave Story? I know action games aren't your strong suit, but it just has some of the most amazing music and atmosphere that I have ever seen in a video game, and it just seems like the kind of thing you might play.
They also intended the Hookshot to be necessary to get the Cane of Somaria, but as you showed in this LP, that wasn't necessary either, because they didn't time the collapsing floor well enough. I also don't think they considered how much the Cane of Somaria breaks the 5th dungeon.
So overall, there were some interactions that they overlooked there, but honestly, I think that just makes the game more fun. Giving the player freedom to do things differently once you understand the game is fun!
About the order of the dungeons: I think they DID try to force the player to do the dungeons in the correct order. However, there were just a lot of workarounds you could do to avoid needing the correct item. For example, they intended you to need the Hookshot to get to the third and fourth dungeon. But obviously you can use that dark world portal north of Kakariko Village, which lets you skip the 2nd dungeon, which the game creators didn't consider.
Music: It's hard to get emotionally attached to games in this era. Most games of this era didn't really have an emotionally tugging "plot"... I'd say FFIV was the first game that really did that, and that came out just a little before Link to the Past did. I still really love the music, though. Many people still think the Dark World theme is the best tune in the entire series. I also think the ending theme is one of the best ever, and the final boss music is pretty good.
Well, maybe Link wished for the world to be just the same as if Ganon had never been there. That's an interpretation that seems "purer" to me. Can't explain. So I don't expect anyone to understand what I mean.
In support of the Resurrection Wish interpretation, remember that during the intro, it was stated that Agahnim had killed the King of Hyrule. Yet in the epilogue we see the King alive. So, Link must have wished for him (and all the other victims) to be resurrected.
I know i may regret this but how do we know that there even is a timeline i mean what if the each zelda game is a different dimension that has some thing that stay the same?
@ryanclemons1 Recently, Nintendo released a book/guide/stuff about the Zelda series, i think to celebrate the series anniversary. I imagine it contains lots of informations about all the games in the series, BUT it also contains the official timeline, or how Nintendo sees it.
Those fairies are always there during the ending at Wishing Well. I know because I never used a bomb on the cracked wall there before. (Mainly because I never knew it was there.)
Actually, I think that the non-linear final dungeons are actually a pro rather than a con. It encourages players to explore, and when you can't get through one dungeon, you can always try another in stead of just giving up and doing something else.
Easily my favourite of the 2D/sprite based RPG's, let alone Zelda's. Quite a lot of nostalgia in the game for me as I did play it religiously back in the day. My No.2 in the series to Majora's Mask although I haven't had the chance to play Skyward Sword yet but, it would take a lot to knock MM off my No.1 slot. Great LP as always HCBailly.
been playin this game for 20 years and i did not know all the secrets. thank you for a great let's play. Locking foreward to ocarina of time and your other let's play's
Thanks for a great LP HCBailly,I enjoyed it so much, you knew so many more secrets and such that i never did, i remember playing this so much as a kid, almost everyday lol
I hope there will be a bonus episode with the "Temple of the Four Swords" from the GBA version. Probably have to use a cheat code if you didn't unlock it back in the day.....
Note that you "totally destroyed" Ganon, despite Zelda I taking place in this timeline's future (which has been established since the 1991 release). If Link wished for everyone to be revived... That's actually rather brilliant.
I loved This lp HcBailly. Most lpers I watch fly through the game, ignore funny parts and try to impress everyone on their knowledge of it. Yet you just played it nice and steady and showed off some stuff here and there which made me enjoy watching this not to mention your commentary is always excellent. Great lp and look forward to future ones
To be honest, I don't like the 3D aspect on the 3DS, too. It's usually a shoddy gimmick that fails to impress for the most part. Also sometimes it lowers the frame rate on the 3DS, so I usually play with it off, too.
Im glad to have seen this awesome lp,it was an important part of my childhood and one the games that got me into the zelda series, although most of my memories came from watching my older siblings play when I was a kid lol,Im to have your lp apart of my memories HC,especially the HA! I don't why but I love it ^_^
He would've used savestates on the emulator rather than the save feature of the actual game. It is certainly possible to get 0 games playing on an actual SNES, but you need a good 2-4 hours set aside, depending on your speed and skill level.
8:30-9:00ish. I didn't find sequence-breaking to be very problematic. You have to get the Hammer to visit any dungeon other than #1. You need the Titan Mitt to reach dungeons 5 and 6. And then the Cane of Somaria for 7. And while it is possible to complete dungeon 5 without the Fire Rod, who would dare claim that the game doesn't mean for you to get the Rod first?
Of course you can open Big Chests, leave without fighting the boss, and visit another dungeon, but I find that a bit cheap.
Wow I find it amazing how fast u were able to finish this game, I really appreciate that your working ur ass off uploading a recording these lp videos (sure the fans would agree as well), continue the good work.
5:28 The line is confusing. I took "sleeping again FOREVER" to mean the Master Sword would never have to be used again, when it feels obvious that there will someday be another day when the Sword must once again be drawn out in order to save the world.
I gotta say, it was nice to see an actual LP of this, rather than essentially a speed run like most others do. They mainly just zip through all the dialogue and stuff. Pleasant surprise.
This is really the only 2D Zelda I love, mainly because it was the only one I played before Ocarina of Time came out in my youth. :/
Zelda only splits up the Triforce of Wisdom into 8 pieces in the first game Ganon had the Triforce of Power. They don't specifically say anything about the Triforce of Courage but in later games say that Link is associated with it :p
I agree with your ratings. The music...love it. But there isn't really any piece of music in the game that...evokes happiness, sadness, anger, etc. Gameplay...very good. Of course whether or not I agree with your rating or not doesn't matter. As it's your opinoin. This game...is most certainly one of my favorite games I've ever played. I've always thought Link's Uncle dies too, but the ending "Link's Uncle Recovers" contradicts that. I think Link wished them all back to life too.
im looking forward to the FF4psp LP its always nice to see a re-LP on a game you did a while back especially one that great, no offense but your older LPs weren't as lively as they are today not saying they were bad its just you've improved on being more fun to listen to (or something like that) anyways i really enjoyed this LP.
Well, I think the idea that he (the uncle) died and was brought back to life is a better one, I have to wonder if he was simply injured. If you revisit that passage, he isn't there anymore, and in the game when they depict the priest's death he blinks and disappears, which didn't happen with the uncle.
@mackenzy123 I always knew it wouldn't work as well as you'd like it to. I don't get why they didn't just make a pair of glasses you hook into a DS sized device. Can't be that expensive, it's just a holder for 2 screens anyway.
SUPERB. My most sincere congratulations and appreciation for completing this series!
I know this game really, really well, but I loved every minute of this LP! Thanks a million, HCBailly! I was considering playing it again, but watching this LP gave me the same amount of enjoyment. Not sure if that's pathetic or not, but it happened all the same. Really, thank you for bringing extra pleasure during my holiday vacation!
HCBailly, thanks for this amazing LP. To me it was a blast of nostalgic fun. With that said, what would it take for you to LP Majora's Mask? I remember reading a comment of yours in another Zelda LP saying that you'd have to LP Ocarina first in order to show how Majora is better, but would that really be necessary? I only ask because Majora is probably my favorite in the series and I would love to see you LP it someday.
@Cyron757 MM was an awesome game but have you played TP or SS for the Wii? They are superb! Nintendo never ceases to amaze me, I mean, even their old games are still awesome and the new ones are pretty amazing too.
@GlobalIdiot101 I started TP using a borrowed copy of the game but never finished it. I'm planning on getting SS once I have more free time to really sink into it. I think MM stands alone in my book because of how well it makes you feel like a part of Termina through the interaction with NPCs, something no other Zelda game had managed to do. I also loved the game mechanics and the sense of urgency throughout the quest. The game might seem like a departure in the series, but I for one loved it.
You didn't outright kill Ganon in this game. Apparently, (I don't know where I read this,but...) his ashes remained and he was revived in the Oracle games.
Thanks a lot for this LP! I've always wanted to see a Link To The Past LP, and you've done terrifically. As someone who has never played this game, now I'm satisfied :D
@parnash I think he's talking about how the textures sort of distort when the game's in 3D. The framerate of the game also drops a little in that mode, from what I've seen.
I am a partial fan of the 3D on the 3DS, though. OoT 3D's 3D effect makes things just a bit choppier, though.
@DeamonReader I can see everything perfectly with my glasses. The 3D just doesn't look that good to me. If it's 3D, it should look like my hand in front of me or like I'm looking through a window. It does not add that to me, but it doesn't hurt either. I love the controls, the interface, and the gyroscope effects, which are far more important to me.
@HCBailly I agree with your comment about the 3D its not the best but it does act better with mario 3d I personally never used the 3d function but mario uses it quite well. You can see certain things that i would never had realized without it. Zelda ocarina of time doesnt really take any advantage of the 3d feature so i never used it plus it was a strain on my eyes most the time.
I love that part in the credits-music where the main Zelda theme slowly makes its way in, especially in the different piano-remixes of the song, very nice. Looking forward to your next side-LP! Although I have to say now I'm even more hungry for Majora's Mask and wish it was next... >.>
That number increases for every potion or fairy you actively use in dungeons, as well as every save and death. I'm puzzled as to why your 4th dungeon remained 000.
It only increases on an actual Game Over (death without a fairy in reserve) or a Save and Quit here. Using potions or fairies won't increase the count.
@wsfkzheg A part is a "fraction of a whole". There's no such thing as something having "1 part", since there's no fractions. And don't go saying that 1/1 is a fraction, and use that as an excuse.
That 3D Triforce effect and then the background in the credits made my jaw drop back then.
I'm not too impressed with the 3DS effect now either.
"The Return of the King" and I never realized that was ripped off from Tolkien until now.
Thanks for the nostalgia kick in this LP.

So you never saved the game? What, did you just leave the game on until the next episode?
Sinner3688 1 month ago
@Sinner3688
He would've used savestates on the emulator rather than the save feature of the actual game. It is certainly possible to get 0 games playing on an actual SNES, but you need a good 2-4 hours set aside, depending on your speed and skill level.
Zalis116 1 month ago
8:30-9:00ish. I didn't find sequence-breaking to be very problematic. You have to get the Hammer to visit any dungeon other than #1. You need the Titan Mitt to reach dungeons 5 and 6. And then the Cane of Somaria for 7. And while it is possible to complete dungeon 5 without the Fire Rod, who would dare claim that the game doesn't mean for you to get the Rod first?
Of course you can open Big Chests, leave without fighting the boss, and visit another dungeon, but I find that a bit cheap.

MegaAwesomazing 1 month ago
5:28 The line is confusing. I took "sleeping again FOREVER" to mean the Master Sword would never have to be used again, when it feels obvious that there will someday be another day when the Sword must once again be drawn out in order to save the world.

HCBailly - do you ever plan on doing an LP for final fantasy IV interlude / after years?
Destiny4Travail 1 month ago
I gotta say, it was nice to see an actual LP of this, rather than essentially a speed run like most others do. They mainly just zip through all the dialogue and stuff. Pleasant surprise.
This is really the only 2D Zelda I love, mainly because it was the only one I played before Ocarina of Time came out in my youth. :/
Cloudski 1 month ago
Zelda only splits up the Triforce of Wisdom into 8 pieces in the first game Ganon had the Triforce of Power. They don't specifically say anything about the Triforce of Courage but in later games say that Link is associated with it :p

@HCBailly

Well, I think the idea that he (the uncle) died and was brought back to life is a better one, I have to wonder if he was simply injured. If you revisit that passage, he isn't there anymore, and in the game when they depict the priest's death he blinks and disappears, which didn't happen with the uncle.

mackenzy123 1 month ago 20

IgnatzKolisch 1 month ago
HCBailly, thanks for this amazing LP. To me it was a blast of nostalgic fun. With that said, what would it take for you to LP Majora's Mask? I remember reading a comment of yours in another Zelda LP saying that you'd have to LP Ocarina first in order to show how Majora is better, but would that really be necessary? I only ask because Majora is probably my favorite in the series and I would love to see you LP it someday.
Cyron757 1 month ago
@Cyron757 MM was an awesome game but have you played TP or SS for the Wii? They are superb! Nintendo never ceases to amaze me, I mean, even their old games are still awesome and the new ones are pretty amazing too.
GlobalIdiot101 1 month ago
@GlobalIdiot101 I started TP using a borrowed copy of the game but never finished it. I'm planning on getting SS once I have more free time to really sink into it. I think MM stands alone in my book because of how well it makes you feel like a part of Termina through the interaction with NPCs, something no other Zelda game had managed to do. I also loved the game mechanics and the sense of urgency throughout the quest. The game might seem like a departure in the series, but I for one loved it.

You didn't outright kill Ganon in this game. Apparently, (I don't know where I read this,but...) his ashes remained and he was revived in the Oracle games.
getsuga97 1 month ago
This whole 3D stuff is cool and all, but it gives me a headache after awhile...plus if you're not looking at the screen right, the screen is blurred.
Back in my days, we didn't have HD video games and 3D games, AND WE LIKED IT...

If the 3D is fuzzy, you're either too close or too far from the screen.
parnash 1 month ago
@parnash I think he's talking about how the textures sort of distort when the game's in 3D. The framerate of the game also drops a little in that mode, from what I've seen.
I am a partial fan of the 3D on the 3DS, though. OoT 3D's 3D effect makes things just a bit choppier, though.
ShigyAmoto 1 month ago
@parnash Or in need of better glasses.
DeamonReader 1 month ago
@DeamonReader I can see everything perfectly with my glasses. The 3D just doesn't look that good to me. If it's 3D, it should look like my hand in front of me or like I'm looking through a window. It does not add that to me, but it doesn't hurt either. I love the controls, the interface, and the gyroscope effects, which are far more important to me.
HCBailly 1 month ago
@HCBailly I agree with your comment about the 3D its not the best but it does act better with mario 3d I personally never used the 3d function but mario uses it quite well. You can see certain things that i would never had realized without it. Zelda ocarina of time doesnt really take any advantage of the 3d feature so i never used it plus it was a strain on my eyes most the time.
RyokuSensei 1 month ago
I love that part in the credits-music where the main Zelda theme slowly makes its way in, especially in the different piano-remixes of the song, very nice. Looking forward to your next side-LP! Although I have to say now I'm even more hungry for Majora's Mask and wish it was next... >.>
MGNSMG 1 month ago
Geez, it went by so fast...
Great LP HCBailly, great LP.
I think the problem with the emotional connection may be that MM and LA have a way more memorable story than OoT and ALttP.
As much as I love this game, there's not much to the story at all.

Thecardinalgamer 1 month ago
That number increases for every potion or fairy you actively use in dungeons, as well as every save and death. I'm puzzled as to why your 4th dungeon remained 000.
SirVyre 1 month ago in playlist Let's Play A Link to the Past
@SirVyre:
It only increases on an actual Game Over (death without a fairy in reserve) or a Save and Quit here. Using potions or fairies won't increase the count.

teckwerks 1 month ago
@teckwerks Something in its entirety is a single part. Ergo, it is part one of something consisting of a total of one parts.
wsfkzheg 1 month ago
@wsfkzheg A part is a "fraction of a whole". There's no such thing as something having "1 part", since there's no fractions. And don't go saying that 1/1 is a fraction, and use that as an excuse.
