I'm from Holland, and my English teacher was singing this song very loud a couple of times. Never knew this song was THAT good to hear, although it's a sad story.
used to listen to this song as a child feeling very touched ,but never knew what it meant,my parents used to put this song on and i still play it forever more, very sad at what happened to find out the story he was telling was true ,r.i.p the brave xx
The Broughty Ferry life boat was called out to rescue a boat in trouble in the Firth of Tay December 1959.
The lifeboat capsized and was washed up on Carnoustie beach while the ship they were called out to help survived along with the crew....unlike those who had gone to their aid.
@BillDFC It's such a sad story when you hear details like that. I hope you liked the song. check out my other song when you get a chance & thanks for taking the time to post.
I love this song and stumbled across the video looking for something else! - as I looked at it I thought the rocks looked familiar and then saw the unmistakable Hook Lighthouse near the end of the video. My uncle was lost at sea just around the point in 1957.
Hi. I'm glad you enjoyed the song, & yes....you're 100% correct. It is Hook Lighthouse, in the beautiful county Wexford. It's one of my favourite places in the world. Thanks for the nice comment. This video is a dedication to the lifeboat service & to all those lost at sea...that includes your uncle.
Ha ha what funny ... I have almost the same clip ... I am totally immerses himself in the story of the lifebaot mona! I would like to wish to Scotland to the actually see ... ... My father sings the song as well ... For more information, see Folkgroup Drijfhout. You can google it. I hope you can read my English
Zie Folkgroup Drijfhout!!
I love this version AND the Luke Kelly one. They are both great tributes to this brave crew and all the lifeboatmen who have given their lives down the year.
I've posted links back to both YouTube clips from the video section of a tribute to The Mona lifeboat crew that's on the online memorials website Lasting Tribute, hope that's OK with you.
I remember it happening. I lived in the town where she washed up, Monifieth, and my Dad coming home the evening after, telling us she had been burned there where she lay.
It's not a competition, folks. I thought it was brilliant that Luke honoured the lifeboat Mona with his version.
However, the 50th anniversary coming up in December, 2009, I suspect that's why this was put up as a tribute to the brave men. And come on, this is a superb effort by emerald folk.
God bless them all, how many of us can even imagine going out in a storm in a little boat, with one aim, to save other lives. it's the stuff of fairy stories.
Hullo Dave - My window gives a grandstand view over the entire Tay estuary. Watching the surf roughed up by the wind breaking on the Abertay Sands this morning it gives a sense of the tragedy. I have stood at Buddon Ness in a Force 10 lifted off my feet.
Yes I totally agree, Luke Kelly's version is far better. Thats why I didn't even try to be as good as Luke (RIP) cos in my opinion it just wouldn't be possible. He was just amazing, and is my all time hero. Thanks for your comment.
Lifeboat crewmen are heroes. nothing more to say. thank you

Hi, Thanks for your comment, unfortunately I'm not multi-lingual, so I actually don't know what you're saying. Thanks for taking the time out anyway.

Thank you for this tribute to lifeboat-men. Some of my uncles were lifeboatmen (in Germany) in their time, as is my cousin.

The Mona saved 118 lives during it's existence.
8th Decembr 1959 a terrible storm hit Dundee. At 3.13 am she was called out to rescue the North Carr Lightship adrift in St Andrews Bay.
The last radio message was received at 4.48 am and in the morning the wreckage was found on the beach at Monifieth.
Who in their right mind would face the most terrible of storms and as a volunteer risk their own life for another?
Bravest of the brave, you shall never be forgotten. RIP!
