Oh my! Magical...and what a cool tribute to The Beatles to perform this at Woodstock. Richie Havens and Joe Cocker too. I think everyone wanted to see the fab 4 in Bethel that weekend.
Unfortunately nowadays this kinda music and talent is gone, the young people of today will not try to reach into their souls and create something like this, not why there's iphones, ipads, xboxs and the like. So enjoy this cause this is real music and this group and groups like them will live on only on tape and in your memory!
This isn't a "Beatles" song. It's a C, S & N song, written by Paul McCartney. As David Crosby said, when he heard It the first time he knew it would be awesome as a three part harmony. They are different songs, words are the, music closely matching the original; however, the vocal arrangement makes it a different song entirely. These 3 vocalizing while in their prime blew their peers away. 3 part harmony perfected.
I don't think either version is better. They are both very unique and very touching. The Beatles are indeed my favorite band, but no-one can touch These harmonies.
Bla Bla...ya ya. We are ALL Beatles fans...But his is not them. This incident was one of CS&N fist onstage performances, and they had millions mesmerized by their melodies. A feat accomplished by few.
It is easy for me Beatles #1 all time, CSNY #2. I was 14 in 1964 so I heard it all when it was brand new. It is all subjective so spare me the the hassle, To each his own opinion.
@twinflame93 i have to disagree, although i think they are really good song writers i think alot of covers of the beatles are better than the originals.
"Take these broken wings and learn to fly..." This recording is gorgeous. I've had a very tough evening, as my best friend is having something of a breakdown, but this is making me feel infinitely better. I'm only fourteen, but the healing power of this song is still startling forty years after Woodstock.
I totally agree, and it's actually is not the only cover better then the beatles original. Of course there is Joe Cocker's "With a Little Help", and I also like Richie Havens version of "Strawberry Fields". There were those three and some further Beatles covers at Woodstock. So you can say there were no Beatles at the Woodstock Festival, but there was no Woodstock Festival without Beatles.
@LongLiveMercury My dad was always into CSNY but really didn't care for the beatles too much, so this was the first version I ever heard. I always liked this one better.
@LongLiveMercury I don't think people will hate you. People who truly like the Beatles for the reasons they SHOULD like the Beatles will love this version. Plus it speaks volumes about the songwriting behind the original song that an arrangement such as this can arise from it. And yes, it is impressive they took a very spartan song and flushed it out with such a lush 3-part-harmony. So clean, too.
wish i wasnt listening to this song.it means one thing.

It takes three all-time great musicians to match a lone Paul McCartney with an acoustic guitar. Makes you realise just how good the Beatles were.

Not better or worse than the original. But some days, you just want to hear a song you love with more harmonies, right?

Nice version ,very folky..not as good as the beatles version, though they are impossible to cover.

As it should be sung. Love CSN (especially Nash, of course) on this one.

I'm sure that based on what the Beatles did with "Because" , "Blackbird" would have become a great 4 part harmony song and probably better than this.
