It's fantastic for servers in TheDangerJoe00's state (if it's a real one), but here in reality servers make WAY less than minimum wage [$2.61 at the restaurant I worked at during college]. For all the idiots saying "go to college & get a real job" - there are a lot of servers depending on your 15-20% payment for services rendered (tip) to pay for/save for college or just get by paying bills.
The next time you feel like not leaving a tip for GOOD service, please put yourself in their shoes.
I don't go out to eat much, but when I do, I don't tip. Here's why:
You don't deserve it. In my state, you make 8.67 an hour, minimum wage, for doing your job, then demand 20% on top. I've worked construction jobs making minimum wage, you think your job is tough? You think the people you deal with are bad? Deal with a site foreman. Get a real job.

i work at taco bell, mostly as a cashier. our crew had an unfortunate experience with a drunk customer tonight (to be honest, i think the guy was also dope-drunk or had been doing coke or something, he was really that out-there and ridiculous). pleased to find this video, it was funny and made me feel better. i make minimum wage and we're not allowed to take tips, so i guess our experiences are a little different ajax... but anyway, good luck with all this.

the managers werent mad b/c they saw that i had done so well& were like 'u have all these great tips all day& this 1 table that left u a bad tip for no reason& acted fine the whole time.' it was just weird.
Dont worry about those guys, they were looking for an excuse not to tip. mothers day i worked a double& was being attentive- at the end of the night I made the least amount of mistakes& made the most in tips w/ a 24% tip average. guests thanked me for taking good care of them& some gave me hugs! but i had 1 table that was nice the entire time then turned around& left me a 3% tip& left a note that i gave them terrible service! i dont know what i did wrong.
When I was a waitress I was more than happy NOT to be tipped (which was rare) than to have anything nasty said to me. Believe me waitresses and waiters dont remember the ones that dont tip , they remember what was SAID to them though and the people that said it .
People are just stupid, especially the idiots who think tips are optional. If you don't want to leave a tip go to burger king....otherwise don't bring your cheap broke ass to a sit down restaurant where you are not only paying for food but you are paying for service. @ns88ster just so your aware, our employers dont pay us much aka less then minimum wage, and if we have health insurance the we make nothing at all after taxes are taken out. it's IMPLIED that you tip us for the word TIPS stands for To Insure Proper Service, so try to be nice to your server in training next time, if he/she is being a douche then i guarantee you or the individuals you were with started it, but with your attitude i would assume its your fault

Oh yes i've had those nights of bad tips. Unforunately what you said about racial steroytypes is true. A majority do not tip. In the end it all comes down to the class of the person. If a server gives you grief for a 20% tip that server is wrong and should be terminated. I have been in the restaurant biz for 13 years, and anyone who tips 20% I remember and make sure I take real good care of. Take it easy on the failed at life though.

went to buffalo wild wings this server was on his A game no sooner would i put an empty beer glass down he just pop's up outta nowhere saying "another one?!" it was me and about 12 of my friends guys and kinda needy girls.. food orders fuck the works.. he was on his game the whole time. we all gave the dude 8 dollar tips. 96 bucks for 2 hours of his time.
He apparently lives in a Right To Work state, which basically means it's easier to get hired but if you're a server they can drop the salary as low as they want to factor in tips. When I was serving in California, for example, I had a 7.50 and then 8.00 salary along with tips that didn't get taxed. When I went to Arizona and worked by salary was 3.65 and then my tips. What sucks is people in Arizona tip like assholes. 5 bucks or something regardless of the tab. It's worse in Iowa.

3rd shift would be rough. i work nights at a bob evans and close about 4 nights a week. this week im working 6 nights plus 5 days of school. last week i had 32 hours at work and 30 at school. needless to say i dont have a life.
Yes, and that's why you hate your job, because you hate people and people are your mode of income. If you do a good job, and no tip comes, then simply refuse to wait on them the next time. I tip everyone every time I am served, and it is usually more than they have coming, or even deserve. This does not however make it necessary for anyone to tip, it is not legal to charge someone a fee for something that is a gift. I suggest you get a 2 year degree and become a nurse or respiratory therapist

I am a server, 35 years old. I agree with the 20%. My friend, find a better class of restaurant to wait tables in. However, my friend, I stand in solidarity with you. As a server and a laid-off banker, I took my parents out for dinner at an Outback Steakhouse in Florida. The service actually was bad. I admit that. My dad, full of chemo and pain-killers made a little bit of a scene. $30.00 tip on an $80.00 check. She didn't deserve it. But that is what I did.

In the Commonwealth of Virginia, the minimum wage for food servers is $2.13/hr. Because I am good at what I do, my real hourly wage is over $25.00/hr. I will not work for a guaranteed $9.25/hr. I will bank on my ability to earn much more.

But if you can't live off the tips you are getting, it's also cool to CHANGE jobs.

I dont know where you are from but it's still 10% and I tip pretty well between 5 and 10 bucks depending on what I order and how good you were and how good the food was...
Standard is actually now 15% for moderate service, 20% or more for good service, 10% for bad service, and stiffing is you got absolutely horrible service. 10% doesn't cut it anymore, especially since serving wages haven't gone up since minimum wage was $4.25/hr. (hence why servers get $2.13/hr). Cost of living has gone up, cost of serving wages haven't changed, hence 10% now is considered rude to most servers.
Sometimes people are just like that My sister used to be a waitress and there were a lot of people, especially guys(I'm sorry to say) who only said that to get out of paying for the meal or tip. Also i think woman in general do better as a waiter/waitress because like hey they can show some clevage or just look 'hot' and the guys are all for them.
Why would they eat it? If it tasted like that then they should not of eaten it and mad a complaint straight away. But they ate it, so it must of been ok.

Waiting tables is a girls job.If you don't like it get a job at a Gas Station or at K-mart like most other college aged guys had too. I did it and no one tipped me ever.
You get 10% more if you do something worth it, maybe 50 cents per thing, maybe 25.
Ack. The minimum wage here is $7.80 or something like that and even then, that's not enough to live on. People rely on tips here as well but less so. Honestly, I think it would be easier to increase costs of services slightly and pay people like servers more rather than rely on arbitrary tipping. It's not like that sort of thing would evert take effect quickly...but it would simplify things.
hey man its kinda late but i just seen your video on serving, i used to work at a bar and made bank there man i know you dont like drunks but getting them drunk and feeding them after they are drunk is two tootally differnt things i handled a 25 top of japanese people (who by the way always tip awsome) and made 215 after tipout most nights i made a lil under 120 weekdays and 170 weekends and if they dont tip then you can just cus them out and not have to worry about

The minimum wage law has no meaning if restaurants are allowed to pay LESS than it. And just so people know, conservatives fought tooth and nail against even thecreation of a minimum wage. They screamed that it was socialism and we don't need it in America. Sound familiar? Also, no Republican-majority Congress has ever voted to increase the minimum wage, only the Democratic-majority has ever increased it. I just wish people knew basic things like this, then they might understand the game.

went to buffalo wild wings this server was on his A game no sooner would i put an empty beer glass down he just pop's up outta nowhere saying "another one?!" it was me and about 12 of my friends guys and kinda needy girls.. food orders fuck the works.. he was on his game the whole time. we all gave the dude 8 dollar tips. 96 bucks for 2 hours of his time.

He apparently lives in a Right To Work state, which basically means it's easier to get hired but if you're a server they can drop the salary as low as they want to factor in tips. When I was serving in California, for example, I had a 7.50 and then 8.00 salary along with tips that didn't get taxed. When I went to Arizona and worked by salary was 3.65 and then my tips. What sucks is people in Arizona tip like assholes. 5 bucks or something regardless of the tab. It's worse in Iowa.

Yes, and that's why you hate your job, because you hate people and people are your mode of income. If you do a good job, and no tip comes, then simply refuse to wait on them the next time. I tip everyone every time I am served, and it is usually more than they have coming, or even deserve. This does not however make it necessary for anyone to tip, it is not legal to charge someone a fee for something that is a gift. I suggest you get a 2 year degree and become a nurse or respiratory therapist

Also, refusing to serve someone on your own accord as a server is grounds for termination in some restaurants. Servers don't have a choice as to whether or not they get good tippers. They do, however, as the man said, rely on those tips to pay their rent.

So you get a job as a "server" and your boss tells you: "Hey listen, I know I'm only going to pay you less than subsistence wages for your hard work here at my business, but don't worry, thats no big deal cause all my customers are going to give you a tip of about 20 percent of what I'm charging for food". I am a server, 35 years old. I agree with the 20%. My friend, find a better class of restaurant to wait tables in. However, my friend, I stand in solidarity with you. As a server and a laid-off banker, I took my parents out for dinner at an Outback Steakhouse in Florida. The service actually was bad. I admit that. My dad, full of chemo and pain-killers made a little bit of a scene. $30.00 tip on an $80.00 check. She didn't deserve it. But that is what I did.

In the Commonwealth of Virginia, the minimum wage for food servers is $2.13/hr. Because I am good at what I do, my real hourly wage is over $25.00/hr. I will not work for a guaranteed $9.25/hr. I will bank on my ability to earn much more.

I have never had to wait tables... but I always tip at least 20% sometimes more... and rarely tip less than 15% even with "just okay" service.
I have always respected that servers work so hard... it would be different if they were paid in a way that didn't consider their tips.

Standard is actually now 15% for moderate service, 20% or more for good service, 10% for bad service, and stiffing is you got absolutely horrible service. 10% doesn't cut it anymore, especially since serving wages haven't gone up since minimum wage was $4.25/hr. (hence why servers get $2.13/hr). Cost of living has gone up, cost of serving wages haven't changed, hence 10% now is considered rude to most servers.

Ack. The minimum wage here is $7.80 or something like that and even then, that's not enough to live on. People rely on tips here as well but less so. Honestly, I think it would be easier to increase costs of services slightly and pay people like servers more rather than rely on arbitrary tipping. It's not like that sort of thing would evert take effect quickly...but it would simplify things.

Wow so true..and you would think people hadn't seen movies like Waiting..lol an education on why you should never fu*k with people who serve your food. I am an night bartender so I also deal with drunken fools and skanks, so i get your point. I was stiffed,(not in a good way) by a bunch of teens going to prom they gave me $0.15 short of the actual bill and no tip whatsoever..but all the creepy little boys did offer to take me out and do me after they dropped off their underage girlfriends thanks

i hate that shit, i'm a server too. if you can't afford to tip, go to mcdonalds. and if somethings wrong with the food, tell the server! you can get it taken off the bill but still tip the motherfucking server. yeah, i'm angsty on this issue.
