  • I first heard this absolutely beautiful song for the first time driving home from Devon where I'd been to my Mum's funeral. It was like the song had been sent by angels to comfort me in my loss.Time han't diminished the significance of this song to me.I still feel so at peace whenever I hear it. Thankyou to Clanaad for this joy.

  • Moya Brennan and Clannad are such an inspiration for me. I love her unique voice, she sounds so mystically and earthly

  • 1 of the best bands ever..really wish they would make more songs now.

  • I read somewhere this was written hundreds of years ago. Not sure we have got any better at making music since.

  • Cochán is a paved road, not straw. Tuinn probably is "waves". Other missing words I can't help, sorry.

  • I.r.i.s.h P.r.i.d.e

  • one of my all time favorites, but I actually prefer the version on clannad 2, the harmonies towards the end really do it for me.

  • é a Enya cantando?

  • @meninoms no, Maire Brennan é la sorella di Enya

  • It's a shame they don't have a "love" button, because I would press it a lot for this song...simply beautiful.

  • Compared to the shit and chart music we suffer on a weekly basis, isn't it just lovely to hear something so pure and beautiful as this?

  • What a beautiful song! I played this at my wedding.

Regarding the lyrics, there are a lot of question marks in there. Is it some traditional lullaby, very old?

  • als er een paradijs bestaat dan is het EIRE.

  • Whenever I miss my friend Mark I listen to this - it was our song

  • Piękne

  • The guitar part for this version is done in double drop D tuning: DADGBD. Great chords!

  • Stiofantube you are why I keep coming back to Youtube again and again(The Dreamers!)

  • reestra you don't know what you are talking about this is Clannad it's on Pastpresent and The Magical Ring.

  • This is one of the most beautiful love songs ever written it truly is a tragedy(though hardly surprising)that less than a million people have heard it.

  • This arrangement is by the late Micheal O Dhomhnaill (on guitar here ) not Clannad

  • This arrangement is by the late Micheal O Dhomhnaill (on guitar) not Clannad

  • It doesn't get much better than this.

  • This is one of the most beautiful songs ever...

  • Thank you for posting this! This is my favorite from A Magical Ring!

  • Yes, the An Diolaim album version, my favourite score. Amazingly original true folk music. Great to have all their albums played while playing WoW for the correct atmosphere. "cheers Sportymike for the upload"

  • Confident, funny, good looking County Tyrone Man seeks, beautiful brunette to sing this to me i gContae Donegal, on a winters night beside a fire with the white of Guinness on my top lip; after a days surfing the North Atlantic. Willing to travel, marry, and father great children. Currently working on acquiring property to share with said brunette (hopefully encompassing road frontage) and sensual full body massage technique.

  • I prefere the version on the An Diolaim album... still done by Clannad but there are suttle differences between the two. The one on the An Diolaim album has a more dramatic harmonies towards the end of the song, and is more powerful over all... having said that it's just such a beautiful song and there are some cracking songs on both albums!

  • Tirconnell Abú!

  • Beautiful

  • Sportymike, could you post "Croi Croga"? I heard this song once and I´ve loved it at once. Is impossible to me to find this music elsewhere, because I live in Brazil and here is very difficult to find Clannas´s albums.

    Thanks a lot !

  • This song is hundreds of years old.....

  • I admit that I'm half Irish, but I don't know Gaelic, but I've been listening to this since I was a kid. It's so beautiful.

  • The funny thing is that's what they're counting on.

I think Gaelic is still spoken some in the Republic of Ireland, and Wales is officially bilingual. But those trying to maintain Scottish Gaelic are dependent upon Americans taking up the cause and learning the language. After the Jacobite rebellion one could be killed for speaking Gaelic in Scotland or playing bagpipes. Beannachd leibh...

    (Or my favo

  • Yosti:

Clannad has a lot of kind of songs like this, they are wonderful, reflexive, intense, in spite of we do not know Gaelic, they sound and melody are inspire.

  • This song is the first Gaelic song I loved.

I still love this song but I seldom listened to it.

Because it makes me so sad though

I don't understand its lyrics means.

However I'm sure there is no song by the Beatles

    which is better than this.

How popular a song is not

    how good it is.

    Does anyone agree?...

  • Oh yes, that's the truth. I choose what pleases me, not what "sells" or gets the most hits!! You are wise to be yourself, and not one to follow like a sheep!!

MInd you the Beatles are wonderful too, there's a time and place for every flavor of music, and there is soooo very much of it to enjoy!!

  • very well said!

  • @yosti2007 i totaly agree with you shes such a beautiful singer mesmarising

  • Sportymike, do you have "

Croi Croga"? I heard this song some months ago and I loved it. Can you post it , please ? I´m not Irish, I´m argentine, and enjoying Irish music very much.

  • The most beautiful song ever! Maire's voice floats so beautifully over the guitar and the sparseness of instrumentation is so delicate and tender, i really can't tell you how much i love this song and her voice.. Magical Ring is a magical album!! :)

  • Yes,I agree.I play this in the car a lot,it helps take the tension out of driving.Nice comment!

  • @ClaireBoswell great comment her voice does float over that guitar so gracefully :)

  • 20yrs ago I listened to this music. I hear it again now and still it stirs feelings that I just can't understand. Maybe I'm just overcome by drink induced emotions and fantasies and the simple beauty of what just is without the complexities of reality...

  • ...or maybe it just went straight to your heart, touching the person you really are, w/out the 'complexities of 'reality'?

  • when i listen to this it reminds me of my young dats at home.brings myself to tears.

  • Go halainn.

    What does 'coinleach' mean?

  • it think it means field.

there's a seperate irish and english translations at the bottomof the information box (:

    "Ar chonnlaigh ghlais an Fhómhair"

"On the green stubble-fields of Autumn"

  • I'm an American off Pict/Scottish decent and to me this sounds like a lullabye.

  • I went fishing with them CRAIC!

  • arcanadh do an unreal version of this song its in both english and irish beautiful

  • I'm glad they let her "grow"...The serenity,peace,.....truly'....'tis heaven sent.....Can I get you to sing at my wake?

  • Thank you for posting this.. The music is haunting, hypnotic and I think could break even the stoniest heart. It reminds me of my mother, who was a proud Irish-American.. She passed away suddenly in May, and songs like this keep her alive, serve to remind me of the pride in my Celtic heritage she instilled in me.

  • God I love this , Donegal.......I miss you x

  • i have just upload the English Version of "Clannad - Coinleach Glas an Fhómhair" , please click the video response above, thanks !

  • moves me to tears.

  • I fell in love with Clannad the first time I heard this song back in the late 80's. It became (our) love song .... and tonight I look back and can hardly believe that he passed on ten years ago December. Mark loved this song and I still miss him.

  • I've got that tender feeling for every fool and lunatic who in utter defencelessness love an other one.

    Everything of value is defenceless.

  • Those are very wise words, Stoffel. And very very true, though i never understood why it is that way.

  • This song is hypnotic. I just found this version. There is another by Clannad on YouTube, but this is the better one.

  • I love this song!

  • A most beautiful song and one of my favourites from this remarkable group. First heard them in 1986 and haven't stopped listening to them yet.

  • It brings back a lot of memories, a lot of beautiful memories, my granny and granda, now departed, a household full of banter, learning Irish at the dinner table, uncles and aunts I loved, this song was always around in those days. The grub wasn't plentiful but the music and the craic was.

Thanks for posting this. Ma agut.

  • I think I clicked play 6 times in a row now...

  • Wow, thanks! I was wishing for the lyrics to this so I can learn it! Did you know they recorded this song on thier second album ever, simply known as "Clannad 2"? Anyway, Go raibh mhaith agat!

  • One of my favourites. Love listening to the album at night and falling asleep to this.

  • one of the of finst pieces of music ever.

  • Clannad were my favs during the early 80's and I have been looking for this song on You Tube all night as I could not remember the title. Will go to sleep happy now.
