those of u saying he has a glass/paper jaw have never boxed, he is one of the best boxers alltime but if you get one clean on the jaw and your feet just dissapear. cred to the hitman for his comentary, verry sportsmanlike
What is sad and puzzling is that Iran is a broke bloke. How could he make millions and squander it away. I heard he had a bad gambling problem. People say he would lose around 25k one night, and be right back at the tables the next night to lose another 30k. Now he relies on the compassion of others for a roof over his head.
@lp32862 I know what you're talking about. I read an article in the New York Times about him becoming homeless, and I was very shocked and hurt after I finished reading it. However, it wasn't just his gambling problem that took a lot of money out of his pocket. Iran Barkley has a pretty big and generous heart, and he was known for giving a lot of money to his community in the Bronx. Sadly, Iran didn't balance his money in other areas in his life such as gambling, as you stated. I hope he's well.
and ironically in his next fight Iran Barkley lost the title to Roberto Duran. A man who Hearns once knocked out. Barkley knocked out once legend only to be beat by another
Ya all buggim The blade was a tough dudr from the ghetto.....thats where the real fighting champions are...... the blade forever baby p-ville stand up!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The chin and the legs seems to have a short pathway. Hearns seemed weak on both and he couldn't handle vicious aggression, though he is menacing himself. Hearns is a great fighter and respect also to the heart of Barkley, he got what Floyd seems to be missing.
Tommy Hearns is my all-time favorite boxer to watch: incredible physical gifts yet there was no showboat; he was all business, never taunted an opponent during the fight nor gloated about it afterward.
That was no lucky punch. There is no such thing anyway but to dismiss his effort here is plain rude. The man stood up to punishment that would have folded most with a determination that's uncommon. Give him his credit.
Absolutely right mate...like lennox lewis apparently got KO-ed twice by "lucky punches"..what rubbish. Mccall threw the same shot in both rounds cos he knew he would eventually get him!
Unless they are trying to miss and accidentally get him there is no such thing as a lucky punch.
No it wasn't a lucky punch. How can a punch thrown AT the target and landing ON the target be lucky!? Do you think Barkley was trying to miss him?!? The only thing you can say is that Hearns should not have had his hands down, but that is not lucky either...and you've got to love the interview after when barkley says he "didn't have time to bleed"!
to laronfox,..winning 6 titles isnt what it was all about man,..titles were only four to six pounds difference then,... it WAS easier with all the stupid 'jr' titles.. . reason that he didnt lose more was most couldnt reach him. those whom did could punch,..had a helluva reach and jab. Not takin anything away from him, i liked tommy,..especially against leonard,.. he was a warrior no doubt. never defensive by anymeans,..but seldom had to be. HOFamer in my book for sure.
Give credit to Barkley. He came into the ring determined and unafraid to take it to the Hitman even if it meant getting badly cut up in the process. Took his lumps, but got a good hard right in there for his troubles. Lucky punch my ass. That thing hit Tommy flush and Barkley followed through on it when it was usually his left that scored him his victories. And ENOUGH with the "glass jaw" BS!!! If that were the case, then Tommy would have far more losses than the five he has to validate it.
while i respect the views of some fight fans on thomas hearns i do disagree with some that don't have him in the top ten p4p list. this man was a world champion 6 times and the first to win four world titles in 4 different weight classes.
for me, to qualify as one of the p4p greats there's a criteria that needs to be met: the quality of the opponents, k.o. record, wins against quality fighters and title wins. hearns meets all of the above and then some.
If tommy had a glass jaw he would have lost way more then 5 times in his whole career. You just don't become a 6 time world champion if you have a glass jaw. Just doesn't happen. Every fighter has that one nemisis that they can't beat and for Hearns it was Barkley.
@laronfox Hearns had a glass jaw bro. He just had the ability to keep almost all of his opponents at the end of his loooooong jab and hellacious right hand. He had so much glass in his jaw, he should have been a chandelier. Hearns reminds me of Michael Moorer and Tommy Morrison; great fighters with great technique but also glass jaws.
@laronfox It seems like sometimes Hearns could take a punch and sometimes he could not. He seemed to be a bit weak on his legs when he took a hard punch though. P4P though, he has the hardest punch I've seen.
What a treat for all of us boxing fans to watch Thomas Hearns fight. The man was phenomenal. Never a trash talker, he did'nt need to be as his performance did all the taliking required.
When he fought, there was never a doubt at the end. It was either you OR him. It truly must have been unerving for his opponentsto to step into the ring with a man of such courage, skill and oh yes....an absolutely lethal right hand. I can't think of a more exciting fighter!!
When a guy decides that he wants to become world champion, hell practice throwing that right hand a million times. So there is no such thing as a lucky punch
Tommy Hearns was a GREAT Fighter but in order to beat him, you had to make him dig deep and fight. Tommy Hearns dug deep against Ray Leonard but Leonard dug Deeper
Tommy Hearns dug deep against Marvin Hagler but Hagler dug Deeper
Tommy Hearns dug deep against Barkely but Barkley dug deeper it was all about who wanted to win more.
It would have been easy for him to say he was unprepared or say that he was clearly the better boxer and that Barkley simply got lucky with a swinging right.
Perhaps he realised what somebody once said to me that there is no such thing as a "lucky" punch. If a man can swing wildly+ knock you out, then that is not his luck..it is your carelessness.
Tommy redeemed himself in the 2nd fight with Leonard + by winning the 175lb world title.
I agree, to win you had to draw Tommy Hearns into a close range fight+ test his chin + stamina. It was almost impossible to outbox him at distance. Long, fast+ clever jab. Some people forget how technically skilled Hearns was+ didn't always rely on power punches to win. He outboxed the masterful Ray Leonard for 13 rounds before tiring in 81 + outboxed another clever fighter in Wilfred Benitez.+ later took schooled Virgil Hill.
I can't help thinking Iran Barkley got lucky here though...
Oh yeah, from the opening bell whenever Tommy fought, he tried to take his opponents heads OFF! I know the guy that started Barkleys Career off. And he told me Barkley was a good Boxer at one time. Watch his early fights. Barkleys old trainer told me in order to beat Hearns, you had to be able to take that MEAN Right hand of his. It was the only way to win against him.
Before I saw this here on YouTube, Hearns was already one of my three favorite boxers of all-time. After seeing what a class act he was after losing this fight (on one big punch), I like him even more. No excuses, just gives congratulations and credit to his opponent. Way to go, Tommy. (And I liked Barkley too).
I guess your right. I remember when I first saw this fight in 88' and I laughed my ass off when he said that. It's cool to see these old fights again.
I almost had a tear in my eye listening to Tommy speak so nicely about a man that just CLOBBERED him! Gotta LOVE the man & this sport boy...
