THE PANGS OF PATHOS HAS NEVER BEEN LAID BARE WITH SO MUCH AESTHETIC AUDACITY AND EMPATHY,PHYSIONOMISED IN THE ACTRESS' GESTURE IN HINDI FILM HISTORY.BUT THOSE DAYS ARE GONE WITH THE WIND.THESE ARE THE DAYS OF MUNNI AND SHILA AND CHULBUL PANDEY.YET.IF WINTER COMES.CAN SPRING BE FAR BEHIND?
What a song... just amazing... Hum jab apne pyar ka imtihaan denge tab yehi hamare labon pe hoga... aaj hum apni duaon ka asar dekhenge... teer-enazar dekenge zakhm-e-jigar dekhenge
Dear Friends, Meenaji was a superb actress, She used to put herself in the role before starting the film. For Saheb Biwi.. she gave continuous dates to remain in that atmosphere and the result is clear. Her voice & dialogue delivery was fantastic. We should not poke the nose in the personal life of any artist. Appreciate the art & enjoy it on the screen. She passed the message of suffering lady who was always sacrificed, deprived ! It was the picture of the society at that time.
VERY NICE SONG AND NICE AWAAZ. WHEN EVER I HEARD THIS SONG I GOT TEARS IN MY EYES , MISS MY MEHBOOBH NAHEED SHE LIKE THIS SONG.. SHE LEFT ME ALONE IN THIS DUNNYIA AND WENT GULF..HOPE ONE DAY WE SEE TO EACH OTHER. .CH,MUZAFFAR ALI FROM NEW YORK USA
Hi mike25nyc, You are right, Padma Khanna was Meena Kumari's dummy for this dance. I have seen the shooting of this song in Nataraj Studio. Meenaji was so weak and sick that she could not dance at all. I think Birju Maharaj was the dance director. Padma Khanna is really a good dancer and did her job very well.
I am certain that this is a historic film and the songs are immortal. Lata Mangeshkar´s contribution in this film is immaculate. Her playback songs for Mena Kumari proved that Mughle Azam followed by Pakeeza is criterion of indian cenima. Such extravagant display and the performances co-incidentally by Madhula and Meena Kumari respectively, K.Asif, Kamal Amrohi, Nasushad Sahib, Ghulam Mohammad were all Indian Muslims, Amazingly just one song from each film by M. Rafi Sahib. WOW. (29-01-2011)
I grew in a home where my dad taught me that a woman's place is beside her husband. Or sometimes grater than that of a man. Love to respect womanhood and the world would be a far nicer place. I agree shun the low-life that makes women lives miserable.
She was nice Lady and great Actress, was pioneer of film industry, really Superstar Dancer, Superb Artist and very good Performer, nice beautiful song, remarkable words with fine quality acting, the video is also so impressive / fantastic / brilliant and excellent, it is so sad she is no more with us.

@TheBritain22 oh man, they don't write scripts like they used to. for some reason I knew those lines by heart when I was only 3. One afternoon I suddenly woke up from a nap in my mother's lap and yelled "Shahb-udean! ao deko......" all the way until "Chacha Jani!!!!!!!"
Haha, then my Daddi banned us from watching indian movies :(
O yaar g........... what a beautiful beautiful song ........... Wow meena kumari g what a beauiful innocent performence........ Great song....... thnx for sharing this lovely lovely lovely song....
This is a very special song - Meena Kumari died less than a month after the movie released and this was one of the last songs to be shot. The reason why she has veil on everytime she is dancing is because its another actress - Padma Khanna is dancing instead of the original Meena Kumari who only shows her face once or twice in the song...she was so sick with cirhossis of liver that she could not even walk let alone dance...the movie took 14 yrs..she is 39 here, and in the first song she was 25.
This film is calle Pakeezah. an Old classic that tackles the suffering of women due to traditional practices. in this film this lady singing grew up on a brothel. her mother was nach girl in the brothel who married an affluent man but was rejected by society and her inlaws as dirty and unfit as a woman. 2:46 that's the man and the father of the girl dancing. and the lesson is that a girl that doesn't sell herself is innocent and should not be shunned by society.
I am sorry to say but you are wrong. The lesson should be to treat women w/ respect and that they should be given the right to live a respectable life regardless of their background. If a girl who sells herself should be shunned by society then the man who pays to sleep w/ her should also be shunned by soceity. The suffering of women that you mentioned comes from DOUBLE standards.
@Mahtaj i love you for saying that. our desi society is diseased and hypocritical, in the extreme.while i understand men acting all supreme hundred years ago, but to do so in this day and age, is disgusting.
I wish Meena Kumari was still alive :(
