The bottle is safe. It contains mineral oil to prevent the sodium from reacting. Even if a drop of molten sodium went inside, it would not be able to react with the mineral oil to sustain itself.

Geez, I do the sodium/water experiment a lot for the kids at my school, and I never EVER put in such a large lump like that, and definitely not in a fume cupboard. Take it outside and have everyone stand back with safety glasses on, and put a piece in that's the size of half a 5 cent piece. Also, if you add Phenolpthalein Indicator to the water beforehand, it will turn pink when NaOH is formed which is a good way to show the kids what has happened.

we did this in school and we put a chunk that was much smaller and it was in some kind of hood thing i frgt what it was called. Then my teacher but the Phenolpthalein indicator in after to show us the NaOH. it turned a really pretty pink.
