what a great man- I tried to buy his book Three Wars of Roy Benavides on Amazon, but they have no record. does anyone know where I can buy it ? droy358@aol.com
I am currently engaged to MSG Benavidez's nephew and in his Uncle's steps just retired from the military after 21 years. All of those who have fought in the wars and service are heros in my book.
There is so much of this man's amazing story that couldn't be shared here because of time constraints. I highly recommend reading the book he wrote titled "The Three Wars Of Roy Benavides"
Today, Feb 24, 2012 is the 31st anniversary of the awarding of the Medal of Honor to Msg Benavidez. As I celebrate my 53rd birthday today, I will Honor this brave AMERICAN and all of our soldiers past and present. Thank you Msg Benavidez!
Wow--that's all I can say. What an amazing man. Truly inspiring. Thank you for posting. As a Mom of a deployed soldier, I can really appreciate all of this...
When I was at Ft. Bragg '89 - '97 I met him along with most of my company. We TRIED to call him "sir." When the officers went back to work he hung out with about a dozen of us in a supply room. He and Fred Zabitosky BOTH stayed an hour after COB, thanked US for OUR service and wanted us to call them by their first names - I have not since nor will I EVER be honored by such greatness.
My grandfather was Ernesto Benavidez first cousin to Roy Benavidez and I got to meet this hero at family events I cant tell you how proud the Benavidez family of Houston and El campo are to have this legend in our family rest in peace great warrior we miss you
@mbg823 My maiden name is Benavidez.I dont think were related, but i live here in San Antonio and ive taken flowers to his grave a couple of times. He was truely an American Hero!!
This man was unbelievable. Why don't we promote this kind of mentality and attitude to our children? Why aren't men like him on the tv instead of superficial stars?
Msg Roy P Benavidez A Man of Mexican and Yaqui Indian heritage, A Man of Ferocious Willpower and Courage, A Man who Exemplified his life with an Unflagging Devotion to Duty, Honor, and Country. A Man who Intensely Impacted me and Numerous others in a Deeply Profound Way that words aren't necessary to describe the Effect. Msg Roy P Benavidez One of the TOUGHEST, BADDEST, AMERICAN to Ever Walk this Planet Who's going to tell me otherwise????
Show some respect. This man earned the Congressional Medal of Honor and you post that? Obviously if you post that then you're too immature to appreciate what he has done for our country and the 8 men whose lives he saved.
God Bless the Troops.
Anyways, this guy is pretty hysterical due to the position he was in. "Only Hispanic-American who can speak German with a Southern accent." South does it right!
god bless you and im proud men and women like you my boyfriend is in the army and i to is proud to be an american as well as to be protected by our troops blees you
A Great American and Warrior who unquestionably lived the ethos espoused by the late MLK that "Until A Man Discovers Something Worth Dying For, He has Yet Earned the Right to Live.
Master Sergeant Roy P. Benavidez clearly "Found Something Worth Dying For and duly Earned the Right to Live."
Thank You for your Service to God and Country...trust America will never forget your sacrifice.
Quote " A war torn soldier who was told he would never walk again, only to rise once more before enduring on the most perilous and extraordinary feats ever to be witnessed in the history of America warfare" Msg Benavidez heroism is of mythical and epic proportions. A Man of 5'6 inches of Immeasurable stature...RIP SIR
That's the best part of his autobiography. When they've told him he'll never walk again and he writes in a dream sequence where he imagines himself spending the rest of his days on disability in a wheelchair on the front porch. Then he determinedly starts his own "physical therapy" at night on the ward with his fellow patients urging him on.
And then after entering the aircraft. He base jumped out of the helicopter cocked and loaded, and proceeded to single handedly rape the entire Vietnamese army.
MSG. Benividez has earned something greater than the CMH, he earned a place among the pantheon of war gods and will always be respected and honored amongst the warrior class. Its speaks volumes about our society that children refer to athletes and celebrities as "heroes" and no nothing of our nation's real heroes.
@ chevysmiles your an idiot who has NO knowledge of what the criteria for a MOH then vs. now. Now is even harder to be a living recipient of the MOH. 247ish were awarded for Vietnam. 10 for the current war on terror, 7 posthumous. By contrast, punitive campaigns against native Americans netted 400+ So....STFU.
Ordinary man; extraordinary American. Take a moment to listen to this immigrant; this Green Beret. What MSG Benavidez overcame in life and during one bloody and shockingly violent day in Vietnam makes today's issues trite and extremely petty. This is worth watching regardless of politics; it is very humbling and inspriational. Corny? Maybe; but I think the words of this simple man ring especially true today.
this is back when they used to give The Medal of Honor for people that deserved it. Now in days they give people the Medal of Honor to people that are just doing what any Soldier should do.
@chevysmiles That is one of the most ignorant and offensive comments I have seen. Every Congregational Medal of Honor has been awarded for extreme bravery beyond the call of duty while engaged in action against an enemy. What extreme bravery that is beyond the call of duty have you shown in comparison to the recipients that you talk down on?
This is a bad dude man! I've been a Marine for 14 years now and as a service member ai take for granted the fighting we do. However, this dude made me feel appreciation for those who served before me. Thanks MSG Benevidez
This soldier is so incredibly amazing and inspirational! My oldest son is in basic training right now and this man is exactly what these young men and women are striving for. I'm keeping this one on my desktop to show my 16 year old son every time he needs and attitude adjustment.
I just want to say. If this man is still alive, or if he was. He is/would be ashamed of the last two Presidents. More so Obama. But Bush as well to be fair.
This comment is aimed at his comment saying that the real Heros were those currently in school who would become our future leaders of America. Bush could hardly be considered a hero (as a President), and Obama certainly couldn't be considered so. The man has probably never even held a rifle.
Phenomenal. I kept watching and watching and listening and listening all the way till` it finished. I was waiting for more of this mans inspirational speech. True definition of a soldier and what it means to be a courageous one. Actually. The meaning of a soldier to me is courageous. His name should be in the damn dictionary.
I'm inspired by this and by people like him. Thanks for the video.
"A positive attitude will carry you farther than ability." Master Sargent Roy will NEVER be forgotten. He is the caliber of a human being that we all should strive for. He was a true American. I am honored to be protected by men like him, and there are more out there, everyone that wears a uniform. thanks for posting this video. God Bless Roy Benavidez!!!
I would like to meet the jerk that disliked this video. And give him or her a slap... here is a saying we have in Canada, If you don't support the troops feel free to stand in front of them.
This man is a true American hero. We shall never forget the sacrifices he made to keep our way of life, for it is the best in the entire world. Let all of us always remember that freedom is not free.
I'm so excited I found this video. MSG Benavidez was my uncle and I've been told his stories for years and it's great seeing him in this video. It's so crazy hearing him speak about his early life in the family!

I read his autobiography. Probably the best-written part is after he's first badly wounded by a landmine and is slowly coming back to himself in the hospital. Then he starts doing his own grueling physical therapy at night when the docs and nurses aren't around with his fellow patients encouraging him.
