Those were the days when Redskins games had the passion that college football games have today. It was an amazing run between '82 and '92. 3 Super Bowls, 4 Super Bowl appearances. The Diesel just lit everyone up. Everyone.
I haven't watched the '83 title game in a while. You could be right about the game being a lot closer than it should have been. I remember Mosely missd quite a few field goals, which didn't help the Redskins cause.
Of Note: Most people say that the Dallas dynasty officially ended with "The Catch" in San Fran the previous season, but Dallas managed to bounce back in the strike-shortned 82 season following a good regular season and a strong playoff run. Following the 31-17 loss to Washington in this game, the Cowboys actually managed to retain a strong foothold in the tough NFC East of the 80's, making several more playoff appearances before finally tailspining to cellar-status team in the late 80's.
@Team903rd actually, the Cowboys won the East Division in 1985, but did not have another playoff appearance until 1991. Missing the playoffs in '84, '86-'90'. You could argue that the Cowboys dynasty, as far as going to the Super Bowl, of that era ended when Roger Staubach retired.
Moseley had a game similar to the Cleveland kicker versus Oakland in the 1980 playoffs. Timing plays a role. The timing of the pass int. call versus Eric Wright was CRUCIAL... late in the game with S.F. having all the momentum. A lot of times it's WHEN the call is made as much as what the call entails. Some interesting stuff.
The SF 49ers were clearly the team of the 80's... it 's no contest. Statistical or otherwise. They won 4 SB's during that decade, Skins won 2 and got shellacked by the Raiders in another. Wash did beat SF in the 83 NFC title game, with some EXTREMELY favorable calls helping. Regardless, S.F. was best of 80's.
Speaking of dubious calls, what about the one that denied Darrell Green a TD from a punt return in that game. Add to that the fact that Mark Moseley missed at least three, possibly four, FG's in that game and I don't think the 49ers had too much to complain about. Having said that I have to admit that SF were the best team of the 80s.
@eugenemcgirt Not arguing about anything else you said. But that '83 title game was far closer than it should have been. I watched it. The 'Skins should have been up 42-0, or worse, going into the fourth quarter - not too far-fetched when one remembers they were up on the Rams 44-0 at HALFTIME the previous week. That "83 Skins team was one of the best, maybe the best, ever to put on cleats. But their d-backs were a weakness; and they may have read their press clippings too much at the end.
You know, I'm not a fan of the Skins or Cowboys. But this is what football is about. NFC Championship Game in RFK, probably the most hostile it ever was. John Riggins, the Hogs, Defense, and the Fun Bunch. This is team sports. A Band of Brothers. A Family of men looking for a common goal for each other, the Vince Lombardi trophy. I love Football from the past. It's not like this anymore.
@SBXXChampions You are right .Todays teams are so weak in the running game.I tired of them lining up in shotgun formation on a 3rd and 2.The Super Bowl Champions are so mediocre.Redskins beat Bears and Packers during season.Redskins were 6-10,but so was Dallas.
I love (and miss) Pat Summerall. Simple, non-choreographed TD call, then he quickly zips his mouth and lets the crowd noise and pictures take over. And, man, is it LOUD and beautiful at the same time.
@tmack85ive I never heard a better TV announcer. He knew when to let the scene take over. He knew when the noise would tell the story. I have actually seen posters here consider him some kind of anti-Skins. They must have been watching too much recent Fox. Nothing brings back these days like hearing Summerall.
Remember those days Skin's fans? 4 Super Bowls shows and 3 Championships in 9 years. 1982 is when it all started and with a strike to boot. It was just the perfect match of has beens, nobodies and booze hounds that came together to bring DC back on the football map. Please tell me we'll be there again someday? Oh yeah, and the Cowgirls can eat shit.
How do you even say that with a straight face? As much as I hate the 49ers, they had more Super Bowl wins, appearances, better winning percentage, everything. You have to be mighty ignorant to say Washington>San Francisco.
@cbaldwinjr The 49ers had 3 appearances. The Redskins had 3 appearances. The 49ers just won all 3 while the skins blew it in 83. 1983 NFC Championship Game - Redskins 24 49ers 21
Four appearances ('81, '84, '88, and '89...unlike basketball, the season is played in the PREVIOUS year, hence teams winning in 69/79/89/99 getting credit for that decade). I hate the 49ers, but they are the UNQUESTIONED team of the 1980s
@cbaldwinjr You might want to ask Bill Walsh, who when he was asked about it, always considered the Redskins and Giants teams of the 1980s to be his team's co-equals.
@StraightOuttaDC Sorry dude, but everyone knows the 49ers were the team of the 80's. 49ers won 4 super bowls in the 80's. The Redskins won 2, and both of those were in strike shortened seasons. The Redskins were good, but as far as which team was the team of the decade, it's really no comparison.
A good dose of Riggo! Will always help the passing Game! Thats when he had it all. Good O line! One Best FB / RB to ever play. And one of the Best Mid range to short range throwing QB's
Don't forget about a Kick Ass Defense that Plugged the Run & got after the QB. The Redskins could get after the QB Consistently with just their DL because of Dexter, Grant, Big Butz, Mcgee & later the Mann.
Dallas got PAYBACK in the 1990's..against all teams that beat them in the 80's 70's 60's and finally to Top it off beat the YINZER"S in the super bowl 30 ..I know you spilled your iron city beer and couldnt eat a perogie for days when the steelers lost superbowl 30
This was the season before I became a Skins fan in 1983, here in England. To beat Dallas, at home, in the NFC Championship game... you can feel the atmosphere even now on this video! THAT WAS AWESOME! Like Matty MVP, I long for the glory days too. We have some fine players, Clinton being my favourite & think Zorn can lead them to glory days again one day... HAIL SKINS!
The Fun Bunch! They'd get flagged for doing that today. What a crock -- the No Fun League. I miss these days like you wouldn't believe. Thanks for posting.
@MattyMVP I think sports in the 90s and prior decades where better all across the board. Football, rugby, everything.... the age of the over-bloated celebrity over the past decade. Kids today don't know what the missed, lol.
That's kickin' it old school! This was the last great team that didn't look like, well, like today's pass-happy prettyboy teams.
