I'm not a DM fan at all. And I thought this song might be a shining light in his otherwise corporate career (did you know white boys?). But this version is pompous and arrogant, just like the rest of his music. He's like a bad tequila, it's tequila, yes, but a bad one that leaves a serious hangover.

This isn't my fav version, but really love the instruments, especially Boyd's fiddle parts, in this. Loved John Prine since 1972; he's an American treasure. Love the Bonnie & John version. Also, Susan Tedeschi does a decent rendition.

I love Prine's writing, and I'm glad to see Dave M. honoring John with this cover, but Bonnie Raitt did this one the best. She also kicked ass on Del Shannon's Runaway.

I am sure Prine took the TRIBUTE as a compliment! It is a beautiful song...Bonnie did it well, so does Dave. But Prine is the king of this song..the OG!

I mean I'm a huge Prine fan as well and there is a lot worse music out there than this obviously. I just believe that the John Prine version cannot be matched, and maybe he was flattered who knows. Nonetheless this version falls very short of the Prine version IN MY OPINION. It's my opinion and that is fine if you disagree, you are entitled to! Haha it's quite alright, no need for the hostility

Message to Funnydego: It's a late response so you may never get this, but if you do...I understand how you feel about seeing the Dave show this summer...I am a regular at Raleigh and Charlotte..but don't let grief take over attending such a surreal experience as a DMB concert..they found the strength to continue performing and, as a fan, you should go for support, love, or pure enjoyment because I'm sure that what Leroi would want..much love to you and hope you decide to go.. :)

I heard a much better version of this song covered by Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds that is not on youtube, but I love Dave so I can't hate on him...John Prine may be the original but I really love Bonnie Raitt's version the best...
