I brew my kombucha myself. I let it ferment for 14 days. By that time almost all sugar is gone. Like it is supposted to. Its not sweet, more like a vinegar. So Sugarwater? Never tried a comercial one. My kombucha drink is not addictictive, trust me.
Personaly I don't buy any commercial drinks at all. If you can't make it yourself it is most of the time better not to drink it.
And I will be the first to advocate HOME BREWING! There are many sites online to get info from about ordering SCOBY cakes or kits or this or that for brewing. Find out for yourselves and if you think you have the awareness to brew proper Kombucha, I recommend doing it. IT's the single most beneficial drink in the world. SEriously.
Oh there are a LOT of fakers out there, too. I've tried the lot of them, too. GT's and, I believe it was, Celestrial Seasonings (and it's even a notch below GT's), are teh only ones that were descriptive of what I had read about the drink. Vinegary, fizzy, crap floating in there (good crap), and, just a refreshing drink. During the fermentation, many different acids are produced, beneficial bacteria, and antioxidants are fortified in the body. POWERFUL STUFF! Everyone needs to drink it.
Why don't you tell your audience WHY Kombucha is bad for you or not worth it. Kombucha has been around for centuries and it's going to be around for the rest of humanity's existence. Deal with it! It's a symbiotic relationship of man and nature discovered by "Accident". IT's VERY powerful stuff. But, you can't expect this to cure any disease! This is reinforcements. Not a cure! Are you telling me that coconut water packs the punch your body needs over Kombucha? I don't think so. Nah uh
GT's has less than 20g of sugar, probably less. I don't have a bottle in front of me. And even if you were correct, you would know that the sugar that is put in there (besides the fruit sugars or other "non-cane" sugars) is metabolized by the natural actions by the SCOBY. You guys, man, I don't see you anything as shills for some competitor. 20g of sugar for a drink that size, with that many active ingredients that are NATURALLY created during fermentation.
All brands of kombucha except one I have seen have only like 2 or 3g of sugar...I really think the statement of 'kombucha isn't all that healthy' is incorrect, I really think its amazing for you and I am making some at home right now and am going to be drinking it all the time.
The kombucha I drank earlier (which is the same brand) had 2g of sugar per serving (4g total) Omg, I'm scared now...I don't drink fake kombucha loaded with sugar.
If you're making it you wanna taste it frequently to see if it's too sweet.
Fruit juice is only good when you juice it yourself to avoid all the chemicals from tap water use. Pasteurized juice which is a no-no as well, and the high acidity and/or sugar which some times it's fake juice which will say only a low percent of fruit juice
I disagree with this, I make my own for personal use. Sugar content varies and a lot of that is converted into alcohol during the fermentation process. Perhaps the store bought stuff might be bad, I can entertain the idea, because it tastes different than what I make. Also I don't drink a ton of it all the time, too much of anything is bad. Coconut water is yummy! So I guess these guys are somewhat right, but not 100%. It was interesting none-the-less

vitamin water is sugar water but not kombucha that I see at all the stores that I shop at. First thing first, kombucha barely has any sugar in it. Most time it's only 4 grams for a whole 16oz bottle. I'm not saying that it'll cure cancer but It is healthy and I don't see how it's bad in any way.
I make my own Kombucha and drink a few cups a week. I definately do not have an addiction to it. I'd say if I were to put all the glasses of fluids out on a table that I had in one week people might say I had a water addiction.
all gt's contains less than 2 grams of sugar. 10 grams? i don't think so. i wouldn't recommend kombucha if you are 100% raw, however, if you eat any cooked food, a daily regimen of kombucha is not a bad idea. also, honey as a "better sweetener" is misleading. the culture does not feed on honey well at all. because honey is healthier for you doesn't mean it is not healthy for the culture. the culture feeds on cane sugar and turns it into something very good(probiotics) for your digestive tract.
So, I'm looking at my GT Kombucha Gingerade Kombucha bottle. 2g sugar per serving. 2 servings per bottle. I normally do drink half a bottle at a time (about 1 small glass). Hardly the evil "sugar water" you're talking about. Sure makes your whole video schpeel sound quite misguided.
better to brew your own and get the PH balance down to a 2 or 2.5 its not very sugary if you ferment it properly cause the "Scoby" itself consumes the sugar and converts it.
@steveogurule Because your insides need good bacteria. Water is great but it won't give you the good bacteria that your body needs to fight of infections and disease.
I have had lyme three times. Kombucha is how I keep my energy and strength up. I started with GTs, it helped me tremendously. It took me awhile to get used to it because it was so sour, and NOT sweet. Because of the price, I started making my own. I bottle it when it no longer tastes sweet. Kombucha is good for you, not something you should stay away from. What you should stay away from is juice made from fruit, it has to much sugar. You guys are misleading people.
@TRUTHandANSWERS Go, get a look at a healthy greyhound - a super-power animal. Humans are quite the same in a way, because its our archetypal state to be skinny but strong at the same time.
When you say the words "I don't know for sure" that is an indication that you are ignorant on the subject and should close the one mouth and use the two ears and the 3 eyes you have. Take a chemistry class on PH (potential Hydrogen). Also the bacteria that the Kombucha produces is why the Mango does not go bad for a period of time. There is also a date stamped on the bottle cap that give you the consumer an idea of when you should either Drink or not drink. Even Fruits have a shelf life...
While I agree that most of the commercially available kombucha is higher in sugar than I would like. But homemade kombucha can be sweetened with anything...you could even probably pop a scoby in some OJ and get orange flavored kombucha!
If you guys had some credibility, this vid would be more palatable. But in just about every subject you are talking about you are showing a glaring lack of knowledge.
just wondering are you dismissing kombucha total or the commercial version with lots of sugar?if its the latter, then you are not educating people on the good one but giving other options and making the true original and acidic kombucha look bad.
First of all your comparing a full flavored tea vs a light flavored tea on the grams of sugar so of course they will be higher. Your fresh OJ will have around 14g of sugar per orange. I think you are acting like they are trying to sneak one by on the avarage consumer but most people that do buy those flavored Kombucha teas is as simple as the plain version is like drinking baby spittle. So atleast they are getting a healthy drink in all. Its far better than any soda out there!
I also want to remind you two doofs that cane sugar is not an artificial sweetener. You state that they the ig scale bottlers make it too early when not all the sugar is out of it. If you understood how fermentation worked you would know if you wait any longer that it turns to ethanol and the goal is to bottle it and market it before it goes that far into that stage for many reasons including flavor and shelf life.
What a load of bandwagoning. If you spent half the time reading into kombucha, as you spent making this video, you would of seen the horrible amount of sugar in your oj in comparison to the very low level in the kombucha. And the japanese lady wouldn't make it up in her attic. It would be in her kitchen. What kind of secret lab do you make your sauerkraut in? jeez
Wow. WHAT ever. When it was available, I would have one original (my favourite flavour) kombucha per day. It made my GI system happy, and kept my body balanced. No other product does that - certainly no coconut water, though I do like it very much. Coconut water is best for hydration - but I can do that with water, I don't need coconut water.
This whole sugar argument is absurd. Kombucha has 2 grams of sugar, and orange juice has 48 grams of sugar!!! Most juice is very high in sugars. As I said, WHAT ever. This anti-kombucha campaign is retarded. People, Get a life!

The guy talking the green shirt sounds like a complete idiot. here's the problem. yeast+sugar+body temp ferments the sugar into alcohol. For every 19 grams of sugar in a liter bottle = 1% alcohol. It's not how much alcohol is in the bottle, it's how much residual sugar and how much it will ferment into MORE alcohol after the bottle is opened and consumed. The problem is more of the type of yeast. there are some yeast strain that don't produce alcohol..
lmfao. i little bit of sugar is not going to kill you! and its not just sugar water ! hahahha . theres a huge difference between coca cola and kombucha
What is your agenda here? You who have commented in this video really need to do some self-analysis on your life, and perhaps construct some actual research.
Komucha is a tea, not medicine! One cannot even begin to compare Pepsi and other conventional sodas to Kombucha! How absurd!
I have been a vegan for 25 years and out of those years I have been raw for 3. I personally drink and recommend kombucha to people but I don't recommend store bought. It's very easy to make your own and home and a great science project for children. Also, by making it at home you are controlling the sugar content and the finished product has very little sugar in it. This is the way I take Kombucha and it is a health drink.
You make us sound like a bunch of sickos addicted to sugar! The one I drink (citrus) has 4 grams of sugar for the whole 16 oz bottle (and I share it with my kids). READ THE LABELS. That's a lot less than any juice (which we don't drink because it's too sweet). You picked the one with the most sugar to use as an example. Don't assume we're all making excuses either!

I believe this attitude of "addiction" is not healthy. Choice is abundant. There are some kombucha drinks that are pasteurized, some with sugary juices and some that are really RAW LIVING beverages with very low alcohol content (less than 0.5%) Instead of supporting living beverages that are helping people transition from crack cola or sodas, you are promoting more fear. There are many people who view raw foodies as cult members and not healthy - lets operate from KNOWLEDGE and love vs. fear
I presume the gentlemen in this video are referring to the Synergy brand of kombucha. I think it's absurd to call it sugar water. Simply reading the label will give people a hint. The highest concentration I've found so far is 6g in one 16 oz. bottle - HARDLY "sugar water" as they claim. Coke, Pepsi and even orange juice by comparison count as sugar water with 12 to 30g of sugar per bottle or serving. Many misleading comments in this video. Get informed from other sources.
Omg shut up. D:< Seriously, considering all the other nasty crap we have in our lives, kombucha is nothing to be shitting ourselves over. Even if there are no health benefits, it's better than drinking a coke, which by the way was a really stupid comment on that one man's behalf.
...&much less carbs than fruit juice. i wish i had time/space to try make myown--i'm glad i can buy once while. anyone know bout healthiness of trad.korean fermented rice drink[non alcoholic one,shikae?--it's also very refreshing, helps digest [w/o being sour]...& i usually hate sweet foods. even when it's made w/cooked rice, the fermentation gives it a raw quality.
i thought you needed some sugar to make k-cha. it's often on sale for$2-2.5--only time i get it. it's much more refreshing than fruit juice--the fermented aspect! i get original&add fresh grapefruit[when i want juicier] fructose very hard on diabetics especially.
You say people used to take it as small amounts. That's just not true at all. It's not a medicine, its a DRINK with lots of health benefits.
If you knew about modern history of kombucha you'd know russians who were using it 50 years ago were regularly drinking it as a refreshing drink and that was the reason behind their great health and the reason why russian doctors investigated in those villages with 0 cases of cancers. Kombucha is fermented tea, not medicine.
I have a kombucha in my cupboard, I adopted it from a friend... I just dont know when it goes bad... Sooo if a small green spot kinda shows on the side, thats bad right? i stick some mother vinegar in there to protect it but... dont know
Thanks for the info but this video seriously, everything could have been said in under 5 minutes. Very repetetive and redundant and now I am even spending more time leaving a comment :-( People online really are busy, keep it simple amigo.
All I know is that I started drinking too much mango kombucha and too many Lydia's mango bars, and I got hooked so that I wanted more and more; I also started gaining weight and feeling hungry all the time. I ended up having to go cold turkey and getting off all the sweet stuff. I've lost 3 pounds in about 2 week and have about 4 more to go. Man that stuff is addictive!!! -Lucas
Some of the colours come from the juices. The botanical no. __ are coloured with herbs (I brew herbal teas ;) ). And the sugar is converted to fructose after a few days, so it's like fruit-sugar. Mind you too much fruit sugar is bad too. I generally home-brew, and mine are done until there is little to no sugar left, and I drink in moderation. Common sense.
Now, I'm not an avid drinker of the stuff, but kombucha hardly has as much sugar as coca-cola. "Sugar water" to me is not an apt description. Also, the alcohol content is nil, less than .5%, which is less than many other raw ferments. The organisms in kombucha are not principally alcohol-producing, instead producing acetic and gluconic acids from the initial sugars.
I recommend making your own kombucha - using a 14 day brewing period, so you are left with very little sugar. Sour is the way.
Great video. I have a GT kombucha once a week and it gets me drunk lol. I have brewed my own, and it taste wonderful. I really like the idea of mixing carbonated water with fruit- maybe coconut water w/ carbonated water Mmmmm. Thanks
i also left a comment that seems to have not posted, so just want to say again that andrea does not look unhealthy by any means.. in fact she's a glowing example of the rawfood diet.... if she looked unhealthy, i might agree that maybe she should put the kombucha down, however, she doesn't look unhealthy, maybe her body is needing it and thriving on it... certainly to support the smaller companies is always good, i just don't think its fair to dog synergy without knowing all the facts.
have you really done your research on the synergy kombucha? i think to accuse them of adding 'artificial' sweetners when there's no evidence of even raw sugar being added to make their flavors, isn't fair to them, i don't work for them or anything, i don't even drink kombucha, i just don't see the evidence that they are adding artificial sweetner... i also spoke to them several years ago to ask them about their process.... he said they ferment and then add fruit at the end
Most Kombucha labels include a statement that there may be up to 0.5% alcohol in each bottle. For people who don't drink alcohol, that's what's giving them the buzz and that's the reason they keep coming back for more.
I'm all for this! I don't really like Kombucha, but thought it was a good probiotic option. Good to know all is not as it seems. I would much rather drink coconut water (my favourite) for a refreshing drink... but yes, some celery, sprout and cucumber juice is what I should really have!
I have used Kombucha as a probiotic before. I just recently used it for my laringitis. I am not just sitting around sipping on Kombucha. It also helped me a few years ago when I was battlin yeast overgrowth. And I usually get the green one and it doesnt have a sweet taste. Also as far as addiction some people have an addictive personlty and are naturally supseptable to creating an addiction no matter what. Everything in moderation.
I brew my kombucha myself. I let it ferment for 14 days. By that time almost all sugar is gone. Like it is supposted to. Its not sweet, more like a vinegar. So Sugarwater? Never tried a comercial one. My kombucha drink is not addictictive, trust me.

There are many people who view raw foodies as cult members and not healthy - lets operate from KNOWLEDGE and love vs. fear

Some brands have only 2 grams sugar per 8 ounces (GT's citrus, Katalyst Ginger, etc). Drink 4 ounces and be happy.

the sugar is almost all from the mango not the kombucha

Kombucha is fermented tea, not medicine.

would you say I could drink Kombucha being a diabetic? I used to drink it years ago but that was before I was diabetic.
MsJustjune 2 years ago
@MsJustjune Absolutely. You can read testimonials where diabetic found it beneficial.
And I personally asked someone if he had benefits drinking it, turned out he was a diabetic and since he drank it his insulin rate was normal.

Oh and leave it uncarbonated.

i also left a comment that seems to have not posted, so just want to say again that andrea does not look unhealthy by any means.. in fact she's a glowing example of the rawfood diet.... if she looked unhealthy, i might agree that maybe she should put the kombucha down, however, she doesn't look unhealthy, maybe her body is needing it and thriving on it... certainly to support the smaller companies is always good, i just don't think its fair to dog synergy without knowing all the facts.
blueberryandcacao 2 years ago 2
have you really done your research on the synergy kombucha? i think to accuse them of adding 'artificial' sweetners when there's no evidence of even raw sugar being added to make their flavors, isn't fair to them, i don't work for them or anything, i don't even drink kombucha, i just don't see the evidence that they are adding artificial sweetner... i also spoke to them several years ago to ask them about their process.... he said they ferment and then add fruit at the end

Thanks for always being so honest! Its part of culture, to indulge until it makes us sick.

I grow my own - but take maybe a shot of it twice a day! Thanks for this video though - was wondering about the bottled ones!
