  • Love this video

  • Wow. I cant believe YouTube is doing this...People who sign songs correctly are helping greatly in the Deaf Community. I dont understand how they can delete songs that help people but others can get away with making stupid videos to songs...somethings just not right. I wish we could make YouTube (and other companies) understand that everybody needs to have music. It should be equal for everybody.

  • hi, i am deaf, i like this very much, i agrre and i LOVE music, i just love it in a diffrent way than you do! :) thanks to all u guys who helped make his song!

  • I'd love it if this were subtitled with the lyrics!

  • I can hear this now but my hearing is failing me :( I 'feel' music too but I will die inside when I can't hear it :( I hope I can adapt and enjoy it still once I can't hear at all.... my prayers n love to all who can't hear xxxx

  • @TW458 Don't despair. Through ASL, everyone can enjoy music, hearing or Deaf. There are a wealth of beautifully interpreted songs online. I would recommend you check out ewitteborg, tiffanythill, and kmklined. Those three are--in my opinion--the three best signers on YouTube. Their work is fantastic, a treat for the eyes, and they convey the music through ASL beautifully. A very different experience from more English signed songs.

  • @TW458 may i ask how are you losing your hearing?

  • elo yo good ;)

  • Just watched this again for the first time in ages. So proud of all the views and comments we've inspired. (Also, realized just how juvenile my signing was back then, LOL).

  • Wonderful, guys! Thx!

  • one of my fave youtube clips xxx

  • Shared on Facebook!!

    Great!!

  • It is great!! Makes you want to listen to it again!! <3

  • yo i like this alot! watch my beats and tell me what u think

  • That was nice! Great job you all should collab more!

  • The counselor on a deaf community Deafornot dot c om said that "People who may be defined as clinically deaf (unable to hear spoken language) may or may not be members of the Deaf community."

  • Very cool. I tried the link to AllyBallyBabe's petition, and it has been removed...grr.

  • deaf name dhon olistin deaf sex grils

  • awesome video:)

  • That was awesome :)

  • I listened to this song last night and mused on what it would mean if an entire society were to embrace its message. Imagine a government that considers a mass murderer's right to listen to music in his cell to be sacred and inviolable. Imagine a Constitutional amendment that explicitly names the removal of a prisoner's music as cruel and unusual punishment. I like it. If we can't love unconditionally, we can at least extend this one unconditional kindness.

  • @Deafornot dot c om is an online community for deaf, ASL and hearing-impaired friends and singles!

Have fun with photos, message boards, chat, blog and more.

  • bad ass

  • Totally awesome!

  • Goober, as usual, a great job! Yeah, I know, you don't like your "earlier" work as much ... this is great WHY? everyone DOES deserve music, and you and friends show that! Thanks for being part of bridging the two communities! And, yeah, I think if you asked Deaf signers on YOUTUBE to participate, they would, even if have done this already ... NEVER hurts to do something again! Look at all the 'cover songs' that are out there already, some way over 60 yrs. old! You ALL are fantastic!!! PEACE...

  • beautiful, thanks so much!

  • love it!!!

  • Beautiful video, song, & message! Love Michael Franti - have alot in common with him - we're both reunited adoptees, had appendix surgeries, & lost parents in our 30s.

  • I would be curious as to how Deaf signers sing these. Only one signer used some of the facial signs of ASL that I learned in my ASL classes. Maybe get some to participate? Or ask the hearies to really use all their bodies/facial expressions :)

  • @Dadarev

I know! Back when I asked people to help me make this collaboration, I didn't know any Deaf youtubers. I'd love, for instance, to see how Doug, (ADeafDude) or Zephyreros would sign this song, and wish we were friends back when I did this video.

I think this collab has one CODA and the rest are ASL students.

I've improved a lot since then, and I'm sure the others have as well.

But yeah, I would love to see more Deaf music artists on YouTube!

  • Beautiful!

  • I really really really like this video. Everyone on this video is just terrific! I'm learning ASL and one day I hope to enjoy music through ASL not just through sound. That's my hope and dream.

  • I AM DEAF AND IM ENJOYING THIS but the signing is driving me crazy since i dont sign (i learned to talk instad, and yes deaf people can talk)

  • @Arabellaclover RIGHT... YES WE CAN TALK...i m deaf too...YES we can talk but why shouldn't we sign....thats our opportunity for a perfect communications with other deaf people. and eventually hearing people too.....you basically chose to be hearing basically...i am not trying to be like OMG! THAT PERSON IS SO HEARING MINDED, i use sign language to communicate more and if needed, my own voice. if u do learn sign language later, ur not gonna have a easy time with it.

  • =D this song is soooo true!!

  • This is sooo good getting people involved!! Beautiful

  • thats really cool, cuz Im deaf and I lovee music, TOO! eh,Im deaf and ich have papa roach posters in my room xD( freakin love their music)

  • rofl!! theres a green day poster in the background at 4:06 to 4:10... rofl that shows shes not deaf

  • Yes, Jen is hearing, but the fact she has a poster of a band in her room doesn't mean she's hearing. Lots of Deaf people enjoy music and have favorite bands.

Hence the purpose of us signing this song in particular. =P

  • @therealgoober I posted your guys' video on Google+ and a group of people took away with the conversation. G+ has a multi people video chat that also supports signers. First thing that popped in my head were you guys. Check them out.

  • hey i am deaf male too let be good to all deaf people please thanks

  • This video mad me happy to see.One of my fav michael franti songs. Thanks for the smile

  • What the bleep?

  • I definitely agree with the title of this video as deaf should deserve music, especially in ASL! :)

  • Tara was adorable. Loved watching this!

  • yeah shes hot

  • I think music affects me more than anything else on earth, and as such, this video has affected me greatly. Perhaps one of the only videos on YouTube to actually draw a tear from my jaded eyes. Everyone does deserve music. What a beautiful concept.

  • Are any of the people in this video deaf, Deaf, or hard of hearing? Just curious. I loved how several people signed the same concepts in different ways and am using it as a teaching tool in my ASL III class! GREAT job EVERYONE!!!!

  • No deafies in this video, I just worked with those who volunteered at the time (though if we did another one, I know one or two deaf people who might be up for contributing).

Tracie (third signer) is a CODA.

Samantha (5th Signer) is HOH, unless I'm mistaken.

  • Tracie is a CODA? She seemed to be fluent in ASL. Is Tracie's parents both Deaf?

  • @therealgoober Maybe we should do this one again...

  • @NeutralMage Yeah.... But more ASL. I think we've both made big leaps and bounds in the year and a half since this was put up.

  • No offense to deaf people,

But isn't it kind of ironic for a deaf person to look this up on youtube? D:

  • Actually, no it is not ironic.

See, "situational irony" is a disparity between an intended result and the actual result. Since there are many Deaf people who do enjoy music, it only makes sense that some Deaf people would search for signed music on YouTube, and if you knew that it would not have seemed ironic.

  • And now I know. o__o.

  • >williamcanfly: I know number d/Deaf people, all LOVE music. When driving in car, how often have any of us (who hear, not hear) have felt the vibrations from car next to us cause of the big bass booming out of the car?

When 1st read your ORIGINAL comment, thought was a bit insensitive, BUT those not familiar with d/Deaf people/culture, it is a valid question for many hearing people.

Goober great teacher, patient w/ all...and your reply shows your interest in learning is great! PEACE...

  • that's great. Of course deaf people deserve music just as much as that of a hearing person. Just because they are deaf doesn't mean they can't hear it. Sounds contradictary I know but all my deaf friends listen to music even if it is just feeling the vibrations through the floor. It's a way of listening to it. =^.^=

  • Beethoven composed some of history's greatest symphonies, simply by feeling the vibrations the piano made on the floor. Deafness is not a handicap, as some would believe.

Learning ASL (I'm hard of hearing) has helped me as an artist to become more expressive and communicate better. And it has greatly improved my acting! I've been getting roles without auditioning because I know how to express things with my body in addition to my voice! ASL is such a wonderful language!

  • definitely, he was not only a great musician but he was smart because he sawed the legs off of his piano so he can put his ear to the ground to try and hear as much of the music along with the vibrations. He found out that specific note vibrations give off a certain sound as it passes through something.

That's great! What have you audtitioned for? ASL is one of the best languages created in my opinion. It's really helpful and fun. =^.^=

  • He was definitely smart!

I have been in many productions. I've been acting since I was a kid, but I went to college for technical theatre & arts management. I took 2 years off of acting, but realized I just missed it too much. lol. So I decided to go back to it. I am currently cast as the heroine in a western and in the fall I'll be doing an original comedy show. So it should be fun! :-)

  • oh my that sounds wonderful. I am a big fan of theatre and broadway shows so I would love to see one sometime. let me know the name of the comedy show and when it comes out and for sure I will try to watch it! =^.^=

  • Great video! If you ever do another compilation like this, I'm in!

    Excellent idea!

  • ok seriously, this made me feel nice,

u need to re-do it, with more people,

this should have more than the little 2000 views it has,

im glad someone still uses their creativity to inspire,

    thanks for this

  • Thank you so much! That means a lot to me. =]

At the beginning of this project, I had contacted roughly 20 people to participate. Some declined, others said ok, but were just too busy at the time. I'd love to do a much bigger version in the future, but that's banking on getting enough people who have the skills and time.

  • Very good!

  • wow that was great!

  • Wow!... That is impressive!

  • Great video!

  • love this

    love & peace to all

    **power to the peacefull**

  • Thumbs up on the new background, too, I forgot to say that!

  • that was amazing Derek and all else who were involved in the making of his video... it was beautiful...

  • cried at the end. Thanks again for that.

  • some amazing woman came onstage at mountain jam last year with michael and signed this song, one of my most unforgettable moments, beautiful and yes EVERYONE DESERVES MUSIC!!!! and LOVE

  • yay :D

  • nice thumbnail lol

  • wow. this is just awesome :) wonderful job you guys!

  • Yaaayyyyy! It turned out great! =)

  • Urrmm... by the by. weirdgreengirl's name is Samantha...

  • OMG! I totally misread her fingerspelling! =O

    I'm so sorrrrry, Samantha!

  • Comment removed

  • Hey Derek, when I post mine, do you mind if I (more or less) cut and paste your description on this video? Just asking. This is great!

  • that's perfectly fine!

  • Great job everyone!!! Nice signing and great way to convey a message! ;) I hope WMG will let people keep the ASL videos up now. :) Keep up the good work!

  • I 110% agree! I'm not here to make money/get sponsored on youtube. I am here to interpret songs for fun, for the Deaf community, and to improve on my own signing and understanding of the language. Some of my videos have been blocked already as well.

  • Awesome job everyone! Loving it more since I'm deaf irl with a Cochlear Implant that helps me hear like normal people!!!

  • We're so awesome xD

  • great job everyone! sorry i couldn't be apart of it, just wasn't able to get it done.

but you all did great! ASL videos forever!!

  • GRRRRREAT job!! GRRREAT idea!!

  • May I add that if your videos have been pulled, that you have a friend in the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), a nonprofit organization filled with lawyers who know exactly what fair use is. ASL music videos ARE fair use, and WMG needs to know that, should know that already.

  • Awesome--thanks! =]

  • woah this was pretty awesome!

i wanna be included next time!

    haha :P

    really great :D

  • OH!!! I LOVE IT!!!

  • WOOT! WOOT!
