Hey Jon, I was looking at the 1989 pics of DSM and realized that some those red curtains that they hung from the ceiling for the movie were still hanging there. Have you ever seen them lying on the ground?
@Bigfriendly15 Yes... three of them at least. One was at the entrance to Burt's Shoes on the first trip (frozen in ice to the floor) but gone the next. Another, severely burned, was in Covergirl (Margie Bridal). More recently one was found in Polk Brothers.
I've posted a quirky tribute to John Belushi called, "Crazy Binocular Guy in 'Angry As Hell'". Crazy Binocular Guy just happens to look like Belushi, although he's not a fan of his...
Jonrev, even if the place stayed open, do you think I am right in assuming that it would have changed a lot in the later 70's/80's? Because it seems a lot of older malls were redone during that time, and many older department stores (outside of malls) closed or moved to malls. For example I used to live near an "S. Klein" department store in Philadelphia built in 1966. The place closed in 1978 and was carved up into several mall-type stores in the 80's.
Um... isn't it kind of an embarrassment to JCPenney and Toys R Us that their names are in this? Not because their stores get wrecked, but in real life, because of how their stores here ended up?
@hobbified Because most JCPenney stores today have barely changed since that logo was rolled out, which was supposed to start in 1971 and mostly happened from 1974-1979...
@shoefinder100 It's "Hold On I'm Comin'" by Sam and Save. Personally I think it was a great song to use right before they smash their way into the mall!
That's some clever editing. Elwood is pulled over in Park Ridge, an upper middle class neighbourhood in northern Chicago, and it cuts the shit hole Harvey, far south of Chicago.
To this day, it's still dangerous to go near Harvey.
By the way, you forgot the lawsuit for not restoring the Dixie Mall, which no one proimised.
@maxman1602 We lived at Devon, and S. Washington Ave... My grandmother, and two of my cousins were extras in this movie. I also have photos of the Bluesmobile stuck in the sand during the filming of the "beach scene"...
Dixie Square Mall... exactly what happens when you introduce the "blues" to a new home... oh I'm sorry, it's all the fault of people like the Toys R Us customer if you know what I mean
Reminds me of a shopping center about 8 miles from me. Levittown Shopping center, that place deteriorated for 20 years, before it was finally torn down. It was unique when it was new, then it changed hands so often, and finally the last owner was a jack ass that let it deteriorate, now it's a new shopping center. Walmart, and other stores. Nothing special.
Was curious as to what some of the storefronts not identified were and found an old Dixie Square Mall directory on a blog from when it first opened (not sure if some of these changed later).
Store C-11 was originally "The Card Shop"; while C-10 was Schiff Shoes.
C-21: Robin Hood Shoes (Original map), B-6 was Wurlitzer initially, C-3 was once a Cover Girl store, C-9 (used for Pier 1) was Stuart's Women's Wear.
GOD I LOVE THIS MOVIE! I can't wait for this year's Halloween! My buddy and I will be Elwood and Jake just like we were for Halloween '09! And he has a similar car! Not completely, but a 1970 (4-door) Olds Ninety will do the trick. :D Just like it did in '09! I just need to get a bit more creative this time. I'll make some cutouts of the star, get some gold termporary car paint, and spray the stars on the doors! I can't wait for the Halloween man! >;]
@deloreanfan81 Yes, in 2005... they covered a story about Travis Bell driving a Bluesmobile replica inside, which isn't doable anymore since this past winter. I am glad I drove my Fiero in last year for some photographs. The mall still stands as of this writing -demolition pending.
@jonrev Demolition has been pending for 15+ years. Don't hold your breath on the actual demolition as Harvey is a shit hole and no developer will touch it.
@IDF1987 Nobody wants to mess with the asbestos... although scrappers have been in there lately; it's not "official", but hey it's what Harvey has so-far twice failed to do.
where did they get the source of electricity from to light up the derelict building? surely the electricity in any empty building would be disconnected
@BrandonDerive1985 Amen brother! Amen! They've already done it, and it didn't turn out well at all... and what tha hell was up with that kid? That just rubbed me the wrong way. When you have a hit - do NOT, I repeat DO NOT make a sequel, or a remake, or anything that has the same idea or name. Please don't! It'll ruin the experience. Thank you. ;]
@urgayjoe the first song is "hold on im comin" by sam and dave. the one after they bust into the mall is "cant turn you loose" This is a Great Movie !!
@Frontier800 Well, Steven Williams (the token? black officer) was born in 1949. But Armand Cerami seemed a lot older than 30. Anyway I say a sequel made in North Philadelphia is in order. Check out Cheltenham Square Mall and the roads covered with train bridges.
@ELfabio5 It is between 151st and 154th street, on Dixie Highway. Not even 5 minutes from the tollway. If you're planning to see it, be careful, and do it soon because demolition finally seems imminent.
Well, contrary to what John Landis said in the "Making Of" documentary, I would assume that a lot of cars that were in that parking lot were owned by either the crew or extras as not every model is from 1979/80 as he claims. Sorry, John, gonna have to watch the movie again!!! Can't pull the wool over the eyes of a true blue car buff like me, pal!!!!
So I guess this is why many storewindow fronts and walls are severely damaged. Aside from the fires, decay, etc. How much damage would you say was made to the mall after this film?
@U3Warhammer It was supposed to be cleaned up by Universal after filming was complete, however this did not happen, and the Harvey-Dixmoor school district (who was then-using the building as a temporary school) actually sued. The case, from what I understand, was eventually dropped. The place didn't look too bad in 86-89, when it was first explored.
@KNS1996DFS Nah not really, they don't, its just a movie thing lol. They do eat off the expressways though, I have seen them pull over cars between lunch and getting back to the on ramp.
This scene was actually parodied in the "Family Guy" episode "North By North Quahog" with Peter & Lois Griffin in place of the Blues Brothers driving through Quahog Mall in order to evade the cops after stealing the only copy of a new Mel Gibson movie.
@datasurferable; Close; that's actually the ex-Penneys Auto Center. More recently it was known as the Dixie Auto Center, but it once again sits abandoned. Haven't poked around there yet.
Wards Auto Center was located on the southwest corner of the property, where the Harvey cop shop is, now.
@jonrev Thanks for your quick reply! I looked on a pamphlet of DSM, and I saw that it had two auto centers, Penney's and Wards. I also remember seeing pics of the wards center on Barraclou, and the new police station.
Does this sound like a coincidence? A certain very old shopping center in Wilmington DE called Merchants Square shut down in stages from 2004-2008, and the last store to close was JCPenney... now the place is 100% empty
@jonrev I know that. But this is like an exact mirror of Dixie Square! Check out Granite Run Mall also near Philly. That place should have gone on Deadmalls 10 years ago when I started reading it!
I think that Universal Studios should make a third film, and the Bluesmobile should be a 2006 Dodge Charger (a former car from a Illinois Police or Sheriff Dept.) Greetings.
Would u like anything else? Yes do you have a miss piggy?BBBBBBBBOOOOOOOOMMMMM!!!!!!!!!!! hahahah this has to be one if not my favortie movie! btw not the drum set :( 2:44
I love this scene because Jake and Elwood act like it's so natural to be driving their car INSIDE the mall. Like they're just out sightseeing or something. They aren't worried that there is a crap load of cops chasing them, they aren't even looking for a way out. lol
Best chasing music ever

Right around 1:06 , where they are heading southbound, is that building to the right background the old Ward's auto garage?
datasurferable 10 months ago

@clarkbell It happens all across the country... check out deadmalls[dot]com.
jonrev 10 months ago
@jonrev I know that. But this is like an exact mirror of Dixie Square! Check out Granite Run Mall also near Philly. That place should have gone on Deadmalls 10 years ago when I started reading it!

I think that Universal Studios should make a third film, and the Bluesmobile should be a 2006 Dodge Charger (a former car from a Illinois Police or Sheriff Dept.) Greetings.

I love this scene because Jake and Elwood act like it's so natural to be driving their car INSIDE the mall. Like they're just out sightseeing or something. They aren't worried that there is a crap load of cops chasing them, they aren't even looking for a way out. lol
