  • ha ha motorhead 1:36

  • When you're watching this, open a new tab, go to YouTube (again) and search Seeburg Industrial Background Music IND-109-A (RR-68) 2 of 5

  • their not gonna catch us.. were on a mission from God, lol i love that line

  • Why was embedding disabled by request on abandoned-illinois.webs.com?

  • @luke4090 Probably because this content is owned by Universal; a long time ago they took this video down briefly, but I disputed it due to Dixie Square's history being the main reason for its upload.

  • They've got scumods

  • 4 people want to shop at "DISCO PANTS AND HAIRCUTS"

  • As they drive through the mall... "This mall's got everything"

  • I'm sorry, we do not have the Ms. Piggy anymore on account of the talented Blues Brothers.

  • whats the song??

  • I live in markham not even five minutes away from where this mall abandoned . It looks really cool here too bad they had to close it because it was loosing too much money and some girl got stabbed outaide of it

  • On the last day of my life I MUST DO THAT!!!!!!!

  • They sing, they dance, they know car fu and can make women melt by simply taking of their glasses. I want to be a blues brother when I grow up.

  • The pop-ups are cool, thanks for the post!

  • "dont yell at me"......adorable.....might just be me but I think he is lol x :D

  • good informative vid. Thanks.

  • clean up aisle one...three...and um..the whole mall..

  • That's the way I like shopping!

  • Now I sent funny academic blog's aarticles to Tokyo University,Tokyo University has publish company,I remenbered! It is bet! Title is 「DISCUSSION:SMART PROFESSORS VS Stupid FORMER STUDENTS of Meiji」<3 It is Impossible because ,may be Tokyo University may be ignored my mail,Because I am not guratuade of Tokyo University!<3

  • John Landis should've directed "1941" it would've been a lot better.

  • 2 peoples' watches got broken.

  • Wow nobody has disliked... Oops, spoke too soon. Damn... thats about as small as the disliker's attention span.

  • Hey Jon, I was looking at the 1989 pics of DSM and realized that some those red curtains that they hung from the ceiling for the movie were still hanging there. Have you ever seen them lying on the ground?

  • @Bigfriendly15 Yes... three of them at least. One was at the entrance to Burt's Shoes on the first trip (frozen in ice to the floor) but gone the next. Another, severely burned, was in Covergirl (Margie Bridal). More recently one was found in Polk Brothers.

  • "You want out of this parkinglot.......okay" xDD i love that line

  • do you have a miss piggy?

  • I've posted a quirky tribute to John Belushi called, "Crazy Binocular Guy in 'Angry As Hell'". Crazy Binocular Guy just happens to look like Belushi, although he's not a fan of his...

  • Oh I want to crash into a store like that!

  • The song played in the Bluesmobile just beofre this scene is "Soothe Me" by Sam and Dave :))

  • "New Oldsmobiles are in early this year." hahaha...love it. One of the best scenes from one of the best movies of all time.

  • They're not gonna catch us. We're on a mission from God!

  • One of movie histories most iconic scenes ever! Gotta love the Blues Brother's!

  • It'd be cool if every other scene had this much detail narrated with the movie.

  • I hate most malls built between the 80's and now. But that JCPenney logo is my friendly little reminder of the disco era. LOL

  • Thanks for the information about the scene and for uploading this scene.

  • 4:26 into the camera!!

  • "Their not gonna catch us, we're on a mission from God."

  • Thank you, really interesting :-)

  • 2 people got into jail

  • The two dislikes are oh my god who gives a shit.

  • One of the best scenes in film history.

  • The 2 dislikes are the 2 police men that couldn't catch them... 1 now has a broken watch.

  • 2 people who like this are jake and elwood

  • Jonrev, even if the place stayed open, do you think I am right in assuming that it would have changed a lot in the later 70's/80's? Because it seems a lot of older malls were redone during that time, and many older department stores (outside of malls) closed or moved to malls. For example I used to live near an "S. Klein" department store in Philadelphia built in 1966. The place closed in 1978 and was carved up into several mall-type stores in the 80's.

  • Not sure what was up with that bar called "City Life" at Dixie Square Mall... but I bet the live music there was out of this world

  • Thumbs up if your on a Mission from God

  • @DrRaymondHolmes Thumbs up if you're a spammer.

  • Such a classic film, love his matter-of-fact demeanor as he tears the stores apart.

  • such a great movie ^_^

  • Um... isn't it kind of an embarrassment to JCPenney and Toys R Us that their names are in this? Not because their stores get wrecked, but in real life, because of how their stores here ended up?

  • @clarkbell They still got publicity through the film.

  • @clarkbell I don't see how...

  • @hobbified Because most JCPenney stores today have barely changed since that logo was rolled out, which was supposed to start in 1971 and mostly happened from 1974-1979...

  • why did the mall close ????

  • @MrSonic935 because of the crime in the town

  • What song is playing in the background??

  • What's the name of the song after soothe me but before can't turn you loose? The one when the cops And them start the chase

  • @shoefinder100 It's "Hold On I'm Comin'" by Sam and Save. Personally I think it was a great song to use right before they smash their way into the mall!

  • @Kriankay - Sam and Dave, rather. Apparently I can't spell tonight.

  • go to youtube(dot)com(slash)kjotkjot1 to see someone literally drive through a grocery store!

  • Faux this and faux that. Can't you just put 'false' or 'fake'?

  • @burtowi But if I did that, people would just find something else to bitch about.

  • @jonrev Nice reply. ;¬)

  • They broke my watch.

  • That's some clever editing. Elwood is pulled over in Park Ridge, an upper middle class neighbourhood in northern Chicago, and it cuts the shit hole Harvey, far south of Chicago.

To this day, it's still dangerous to go near Harvey.

By the way, you forgot the lawsuit for not restoring the Dixie Mall, which no one proimised.

  • @maxman1602 We lived at Devon, and S. Washington Ave... My grandmother, and two of my cousins were extras in this movie. I also have photos of the Bluesmobile stuck in the sand during the filming of the "beach scene"...

  • Dixie Square Mall... exactly what happens when you introduce the "blues" to a new home... oh I'm sorry, it's all the fault of people like the Toys R Us customer if you know what I mean

  • lol, store employee hit the camera at the end :)

  • "This don't look like no expressway to me!" LOL!!

  • lol the cops cant drive for shit

  • Mopar or no Car!

  • simply the best....and will never be surpassed

  • 2:28 - CPD officers: "Stop, thief! You are under arrest!"

  • Reminds me of a shopping center about 8 miles from me. Levittown Shopping center, that place deteriorated for 20 years, before it was finally torn down. It was unique when it was new, then it changed hands so often, and finally the last owner was a jack ass that let it deteriorate, now it's a new shopping center. Walmart, and other stores. Nothing special.

  • @talltom1973 except Levittown was outdoors

  • 1 person ain't on a mission from god

  • Is that a Target at 3:40 ?

  • @HarvestmanMan Nope. Not sure what that was. Jon might be able to help.

  • @HarvestmanMan no,its a records store

  • that guy should have gottin hit for trying to buy miss piggy

  • Jonrev, would you happen to know what freeway exit they took right after the song "Soothe Me" started? Right after the end of the church scene?

  • "I'm gonna get those sons of a bitch if it's the last thing I ever do"

  • "Do you have Ms piggy?"

    crash

"We did, but our stock has been destoryed"

  • Still puzzled at how Jake and Elwood manage to get virtually the entire Chicago PD chasing them, but that's what no doubt makes it so funny.

  • THEY BROKE MY WATCH : ((((((((

    LOL !

  • Elwood: It'd be alright once we get back on the expressway.

Jake: don't look like no expressway 2 me.

    Elwood: don''t yell at me.

Jake: Well, what do you want me to do, motorhead?

Elwood: try not to be so negative all the time, why don't you offer some constructive criticism.

Jake:you got us in this parking lot pal, now you get us out.

Elwood: you want out of this, OK.

  • Lady in shop:would there be anything else?

Man: (holds up Grover) Yes, do you have a Miss Piggy? LOL

  • The one dislike is the cop who got his watch broken.

  • "Disco Pants and Haircuts!"

  • the person that dilike was the cop that brike his watch

  • 1 person doesn't have a miss piggy lol

  • One person likes disco pants and haircuts.

  • Was curious as to what some of the storefronts not identified were and found an old Dixie Square Mall directory on a blog from when it first opened (not sure if some of these changed later).

Store C-11 was originally "The Card Shop"; while C-10 was Schiff Shoes.

C-21: Robin Hood Shoes (Original map), B-6 was Wurlitzer initially, C-3 was once a Cover Girl store, C-9 (used for Pier 1) was Stuart's Women's Wear.

  • GOD I LOVE THIS MOVIE! I can't wait for this year's Halloween! My buddy and I will be Elwood and Jake just like we were for Halloween '09! And he has a similar car! Not completely, but a 1970 (4-door) Olds Ninety will do the trick. :D Just like it did in '09! I just need to get a bit more creative this time. I'll make some cutouts of the star, get some gold termporary car paint, and spray the stars on the doors! I can't wait for the Halloween man! >;]

  • what happened to the dodge after the film because the one at the end of the film which falls apart couldnt of been the only one used could it?

  • was it Hot Rod magazine that went into the closed mall just before it was torn down?

  • @deloreanfan81 Yes, in 2005... they covered a story about Travis Bell driving a Bluesmobile replica inside, which isn't doable anymore since this past winter. I am glad I drove my Fiero in last year for some photographs. The mall still stands as of this writing -demolition pending.

  • @jonrev Demolition has been pending for 15+ years. Don't hold your breath on the actual demolition as Harvey is a shit hole and no developer will touch it.

  • @IDF1987 Nobody wants to mess with the asbestos... although scrappers have been in there lately; it's not "official", but hey it's what Harvey has so-far twice failed to do.

  • Greatest scene ever filmed!

  • where did they get the source of electricity from to light up the derelict building? surely the electricity in any empty building would be disconnected

  • Please Hollywood, Never Never Never Remake this movie

  • @BrandonDerive1985 Amen brother! Amen! They've already done it, and it didn't turn out well at all... and what tha hell was up with that kid? That just rubbed me the wrong way. When you have a hit - do NOT, I repeat DO NOT make a sequel, or a remake, or anything that has the same idea or name. Please don't! It'll ruin the experience. Thank you. ;]

  • like how he goes off on the cop... that says please step out of the car please.

  • Jake and Elwood are on a mission from God to save the orphanage. The cops are on a mission from God to catch Jake and Elwood.

  • gotta love the bluesmobile.. not even a mall can stop that beast.

  • I love how all three went out of their way to smash as many store fronts as they possibly could. XD

  • one of the biggest things i remember from my child hood is seeing this filmed in my town

  • SOME ONE PLEASE REPLY AND TELL ME THE NAME OF THIS SONG!!

  • @urgayjoe "Can't turn you loose"

  • @urgayjoe the first song is "hold on im comin" by sam and dave. the one after they bust into the mall is "cant turn you loose" This is a Great Movie !!

  • is it just me or the cops really bad at driving

  • There on a mission from God

  • "Disco pants and haircuts!" -"Yaah!"

  • Music in the car at the beginning is "Hold on I'm a comin'" by Sam & Dave. In case someone was wondering.

  • Pier one imports.

  • Megas XLR did a homage to this scene in Episode 13 "The Driver's Seat".

The whole chase scene aboard the Glorft Mothership; The Karajor.

  • Instead of a dislike button, there should be an option for constructive criticism.

  • @Frontier800 Well, Steven Williams (the token? black officer) was born in 1949. But Armand Cerami seemed a lot older than 30. Anyway I say a sequel made in North Philadelphia is in order. Check out Cheltenham Square Mall and the roads covered with train bridges.

  • where exactly is it in Harvey,IL because i have no idea where it is or how to get there

  • @ELfabio5 It is between 151st and 154th street, on Dixie Highway. Not even 5 minutes from the tollway. If you're planning to see it, be careful, and do it soon because demolition finally seems imminent.

  • @jonrev ohh alright now i knw thanks it hink i'll pay a visit there this weekend

  • @jonrev Sorry to say that I'm pretty sure that it still hasn't been demolished.

  • @jonrev The last thing I read was it was just sitting empty rotting.

  • You call that a Toys R Us? Shiiit that's a Jokes R Us.

  • Were stunt doubles used for Aykroyd and Belushi, or is that really them?

  • Its funny, that intersection in Park Ridge, is about 5 mins from my house.

  • Well, contrary to what John Landis said in the "Making Of" documentary, I would assume that a lot of cars that were in that parking lot were owned by either the crew or extras as not every model is from 1979/80 as he claims. Sorry, John, gonna have to watch the movie again!!! Can't pull the wool over the eyes of a true blue car buff like me, pal!!!!

  • So I guess this is why many storewindow fronts and walls are severely damaged. Aside from the fires, decay, etc. How much damage would you say was made to the mall after this film?

  • @U3Warhammer It was supposed to be cleaned up by Universal after filming was complete, however this did not happen, and the Harvey-Dixmoor school district (who was then-using the building as a temporary school) actually sued. The case, from what I understand, was eventually dropped. The place didn't look too bad in 86-89, when it was first explored.

  • 2:00 Jew?

  • Why would State Troopers be patrolling suburban streets? Is that an Illinois thing?

  • @KNS1996DFS Nah not really, they don't, its just a movie thing lol. They do eat off the expressways though, I have seen them pull over cars between lunch and getting back to the on ramp.

  • Elwood: Shit!

    Jake: What?

    Elwood: Rollers.

    Jake: Nah.

    Elwood: Yup.

    Jake: Shit!

  • "They're not gonna catch us. We're on a mission from God."

  • "They broke my watch!"

  • This scene was actually parodied in the "Family Guy" episode "North By North Quahog" with Peter & Lois Griffin in place of the Blues Brothers driving through Quahog Mall in order to evade the cops after stealing the only copy of a new Mel Gibson movie.

  • Right around 1:06 , where they are heading southbound, is that building to the right background the old Ward's auto garage?

  • @datasurferable; Close; that's actually the ex-Penneys Auto Center. More recently it was known as the Dixie Auto Center, but it once again sits abandoned. Haven't poked around there yet.

Wards Auto Center was located on the southwest corner of the property, where the Harvey cop shop is, now.

  • @jonrev Thanks for your quick reply! I looked on a pamphlet of DSM, and I saw that it had two auto centers, Penney's and Wards. I also remember seeing pics of the wards center on Barraclou, and the new police station.

  • THIS MOVIE is the "soul" Reason why Dodge Monaco's are so rare & impossible to find any longer... "Believe you me!"

  • anyone know the song in the background?

  • Funny as Hell!!

  • too bad it can't be rebuilt :'(

  • 1:58

  • Very very nice movie for 1980 tanks Universal picture!!!

  • I'm getting "Embedding disabled by request" ....even when I view it here on youtube... grrr..

  • Does this sound like a coincidence? A certain very old shopping center in Wilmington DE called Merchants Square shut down in stages from 2004-2008, and the last store to close was JCPenney... now the place is 100% empty

  • @clarkbell It happens all across the country... check out deadmalls[dot]com.

  • @jonrev I know that. But this is like an exact mirror of Dixie Square! Check out Granite Run Mall also near Philly. That place should have gone on Deadmalls 10 years ago when I started reading it!

  • This. is. classic! :D

  • ELWOOOOOD...

  • The light was yellow sir!!

  • June 1979-September 1979 was when the movie was filmed

  • This is awesome, Jon. And your facts are 100% correct. Nice work!

  • @0:41

    Ellwoood!!....

  • why dontcha offer some constructive criticism or something??? XD

  • i really hate that one person

  • Pier 1 imports

  • Best car chase through a mall scene EVER!

  • What makes this scene really magical, notice the Jewish guy is dressed like this is 1966 not 1979...

  • their not gonna catch us were on a mission from god best part

  • one of the greatest

  • I think that Universal Studios should make a third film, and the Bluesmobile should be a 2006 Dodge Charger (a former car from a Illinois Police or Sheriff Dept.) Greetings.

  • Would u like anything else? Yes do you have a miss piggy?BBBBBBBBOOOOOOOOMMMMM!!!!!!!!!!! hahahah this has to be one if not my favortie movie! btw not the drum set :( 2:44

  • I love this scene because Jake and Elwood act like it's so natural to be driving their car INSIDE the mall. Like they're just out sightseeing or something. They aren't worried that there is a crap load of cops chasing them, they aren't even looking for a way out. lol

  • SCMODS: State-County-Municipal-Offender-Data-System
