Therefore the gaurds were ordered that if she does not respond to verbal requests to take the neck band off, she must be out cold before they can go in to remove it themselves. This reduced the danger to them (gaurds)

Also I don't see how they were being abusive towards her. She was under observation for her illness, created a concern for the COs by covering up the only way of seeing her and she mentioned she had ways to kill herself (Hard candy, or the sheets). @frankisparty So that the subject cannot spit or attempt to bite. Having the apprehended person face away from you makes it easier for control. Also I don't see how they were being abusive towards her. She was under observation for her illness, created a concern for the COs by covering up the only way of seeing her and she mentioned she had ways to kill herself (Hard candy, or the sheets). From what I witness, I don't see any 'human rights abuse' here.

@Marty32 if you read my comment, I didn't mention anything about "human rights abuse". Though I do think there was abuse, mentally ill and left in solitary the whole time, originally in there for a short term, left in there for 4 years? They were not trained to deal with someone who was in that state of mind, there should have been CO's trained in that field to deal with such patients or she should have been moved to somewhere more suitable. Treat her like an animal and she will behave like one.

You're right, there should be CO's that are dedicated to mental issues like this one. Solitary is a concern of mine as well as from what I've heard from a friend who is a CO that most of the time it doesn't work.

This is how nineteen year old girls with mental illness are treated in Canadian prisons. Locked up, put in solitary confinement for months, yelled at, held down by four to five guards, forcibly strip searched and assaulted (7:02 on)... This is one of the most disturbing things I've seen. Fuck prisons.

Far too many prisons have been forced to take on the roll of dealing with mental illness. With young offenders like Ashley, there should be much more recognition of the need to identify criminality with mental illness in comparison to adult offenders.

People in the comments should chill out. You don't spend years in "maximum security prison" for anger issues, so stop assuming that she's only there due to mental illness. Secondly, the way they were handling her was actually with much more care and patience than most institutions handle inmates. If you want to pull the "human rights" card, then every prisoner should be set free, no?

I know it is a shame that a young girl died but looks like this was a regular occurance. The guards showed great restraint in responding to her, I would have found it hard to be that nice. Just being honest.

I find this is against human rights, who could live in a closet with nothing for years and not try and kill them selves. This would drive anyone insane. I think she was treated inhumanly and people turn a blind eye to this. If she had mental problems she should of got help.
