Oh, if I miss the bus and the last station bus from Yokosuka -- I had to take the train and Japanese bus to get back home. This is why I always made sure I had YEN, lol.
Yup, Negishi housing is a lot better than Yokosuka's (on-base). For one thing, the houses were bigger and NOT right next to each other! The towers and townhouses in Yokosuka were OK. I'm just glad we didn't have to live in any of the towers, back then. I sure miss going to Motomachi - cho (i think that's what it was called). The only thing I didn't like when I was living there, was the bus ride going to school (Kinnick) and coming back from Yokosuka. The bus ride was too damn long!!
I was just thinking about living in Negishi back in 1990-1992 and how much I loved it and decided to Google it. Never dreamed I'd find these videos! Looks like much has changed, but much has stayed the same. Thanks for the memories! I believe Capt. Price was either LT or LCDR Price when I was the OIC at Fleet Mail Center. No better place for the kids.
OMG, I use to live in Negishi back in 1982, my husband and I were still a newlywed. lol My son was born that summer, I still remember the hot weather there. Negishi is a nice place to live but I didn't drive back then, it was difficult even going to the Commissary. They must maintain these houses very well, it must be more than 50 years old .............. It sure bring back so many memories.
@yukomattingly - Those houses were built to withstand punishment.. especially from kids like me. :) All the houses I visited seemed to have similar layouts-- hardwood floors and stairs with a swinging kitchen door. I wish I had pictures of the layout.
They were built some time in the 40s and I found some pictures from that period (for Area I and II, not for Negishi). I'm hoping to get even more pictures to finish my current project. If you have any to share, I'd like to use them. Hehe.
I lived on Race Track Road from the mid 60's until '73. Lot's of fond memories! The park was a 9 hole Golf Course with a Driving Range. There was also a Helipad where Army choppers would land just skimming over my house. I was sorry to here that the Northwest section of the Grandstand burned down. The first racetrack in Japan. Thanks for the video...
wow that brings lots of memories i moved away from there about 4 months ago man i miss the pool the nex bowling alley the guy that talkes at 3:30 his son went to bryd with me and at 4:44 is were i would practice sports every season. i miss it there i lived there for 8 years total.
OMG!!!!!! Memories!!!!!! I lived there right around the time Gulf War started with some right-wing terrorist firing RPG's into the housing one morning. Went to Byrd for few years and Nile C. Kinnick. Class of 97
Hey Arnie! What a blast out of the past. We lived "up the street" from you at Sagamihara (sorry, I was an Army brat haha) from 1968-70. I remember going shopping on Sundays with the folks at the old Yokohama NEX (near Yamashita Beach Housing) and maybe taking in a matinee at Benny Decker Theatre. But we always made our first pit stop at the Negishi "O" Club for their awesome Sunday brunch. Needless to say, it made for a full day but well worth the effort. Your videos make me nostalgic ^_^
I think you have mistaken me for another person. Hehe. As long as the vids bring back memories though, all is cool. I don't think I ever went to the Benny Decker Theatre. I know I went to the Bill Chickering Theatre for their weekend kiddie shows. :)
Another great post. Hollymom23 and I were there around the same time. Even then the advantages of living there were small town America and easy access to any part of Japan. Then the International airport was Haneda and only 30 min. away. The commander must be commuting to North Pier within Yokohama, commute from Negishi to Yokosuka took us on average 60 minutes one way (route 16), to go to middle and high school. Again, thank for posting.
What year did you go to Byrd? I was hoping that the school seen here was the old one, but I heard that one was torn down in the 80s.
I liked where I live because it was next to an open lush, green field that had tons of insects, but if there's one thing I envied about Negishi was the Grand Stand. Was it closed off or could people climb around in it?
i went to Richard E. Byrd school between 82-85. from watching the vid, and if it's the right school, it looks the same.
last time i remember, insects were a big thing in negishi. kids LOVED playing w/them, esp around big ponds. from cicida's, dragon flies to japanese beetles, stores even had ALL sorts of neato colorful cages to keep them in too.
Do you remember a Mrs. Jacobson? That was my 2nd or 3rd grade teacher at Byrd.
I was really bummed out when we moved back and couldn't find nearly as many cool bugs as we had back in Japan.
I'm going back as soon as I can raise the money and while I'll be there mainly to take footage of what was once Area 2, I'm hoping to take a tour Negishi and see all the familiar houses. :)
Blah. Youtube and their anti-website-posting nonsense. I posted links to a picture of our old school and the current one in the description.
I reread an email I received from the current Principal and he said that the one we went to was torn down in the late 80s. So I guess you just missed it being torn down by a few years.
The first year, I had to go to the annex because Byrd was too full. Do you remember that? We were outcasts until they finally transferred us over. Haha.
So nostalgic! Great post! I lived here for 10 years of my life and it was honestly the greatest times of my life. Negishi is the perfect place to grow up lol.

Yeah, I'd give up my house in San Diego to live in the same house I did back in the 70s. :)
I'm sure you'll miss it even more as you get older. Did you have a field near your home to go catch bugs? That was my sport. Heh.

@d5ive Yup, you're right, it was Bill Chickering. The NEX concession and snack bar were in the same center. Benny Decker was at Yokosuka.

Glad to hear you enjoyed it. When I found the video, it was my best find of the year and I knew other people would want to see it too.
I'm hoping that it will still be there when I visit. Can't wait to see where Byrd Elementary used to be. :)
