If you have ANYTHING on your record you get denied entry to Canada, no matter what the reason. If you are American and your Canadian grandmother is on her deathbed in Canada, you can't go if you have a DUI, too many speeding tickets, minor drug offences (including pot), and pretty much anything else that can show up on any other record. The USA does not do this for minor offences, only drug offences can prevent you from entering the USA, and even then they have to be serious.

Canada is the second of the only two countries in the world which require Costa Ricans to carry not only a passport, but a visa as well, to vacation here. My Costa Rican friends think Canada is scared that they will bomb us with bananas. The visas themselves involve very heavy paperwork for our would-be Costa Rican tourists, dissuading many.
