Automoatic bicycle transmissions are really not new, it's that the prototypes were built in the 70's and made of heavy pieces, steel gearwheels, and not made on CNC machinery. They were infinitely variable and relied on pedal torque to shift gears. The drawback is that they weighed some 9 pounds or so.

I actually had an automatic ten speed when I was a kid, it was a prototype that came from Miami University in Oxford Oh, when the students graduated one of them left it chained up outside and my uncle who was the custodian was told to cut the chain and throw it away,,,,,,he gave it to me, not knowing what I had being a child I road it until it was worn out and then threw it away, I'm pretty sure to the best of my memory it worked off a weight that moved further outwards with speed of rear tire

A) That bike needs a tune up.

B) You're screwing up your derailuer doing that. If your bike had a front free-wheel (like a 1976 Schwinn Suburban), it would be fine because the chain still spins when you coast.
