She is extremely underrated by the general public, people don't consider she has managed to stay relevant for over a decade now, something contemporaries like Christina Aguilera haven't. Britney's natural talent and music over the years has been fabricated into what we know nowadays. She has tried to make more interesting music (her scrapped Original Doll album, unreleased tracks like Let Go Rebellion, poetry, songwriting, etc) but I guess her team wants to keep her as a "manufactured popstar".

I also think the reason that she & Madonna (although M has improved with lessons) have been so popular is because they have average voices and they are easy for the public to sing along to. You may like her, a lot of people do. As far as your feeling towards music, Evanescence is an older band but deep and I would certainly suggest giving Adele a listen. She's got a great voice and a lot of emotion in her songs.
