Some elements of his Latin American background come through in his diction, but overall he is speaking here in a CONTEMPORARY and accurately pronounced--if a bit stilted--Spanish. He does live in Madrid, and as a gifted multi-lingual person, there is no reason to accuse him of affectation.
There is nothing pretentious about being a linguistic chameleon. Oh, and his accent is not archaic. It's not as it would have been spoken in the 16th century. The phoneme "th" for c's and z's in modern penisular spanish was still in flux then.
Negative comments about his Spanish on this thread display all kinds of ignorance. For anyone who is at least minimally familiar with Spanish as it is spoken in most of Spain, and how it contrasts with the many accents of Latin America, Mr. Mortensen's accent is studiously proper and contemporary.
Some fools here are fighting about how, what and why Viggo speaks Spanish so well (he spent his childhood in South America) and why that accent (just using the appropriate one for a 16th century Spanish friar/historian from Seville) while missing the best part of his reading, Las Casas description of indigenous people of the Americas and abuse and atrocities committed by European colonizers against them. By the way, the accent you refer to is deliberate and relevant to the historical period in which Barlome de Las Casa wrote/spoke. Obviously when Mr Mortensen speaks contemporary Spanish, he doesn't use the "assinine accent" to which you refer.

His pronunciation is clear and modern in the interest of clarity. There was a transition from the pronunciation of ce and ci from [tse] and [tsi] to their modern counterparts. To me it is certain that these consonants were still forming into their modern variants. That's why there was the divergence between those two large groups of the fine language Spanish. Perfect reading by Viggo. Incredibly beautfiul. He is talented and spiritual.
@tanushko the truth is that neither latin americans nor spaniards would understand de las Casas if he were the man reading. Spanish like every languages is a branch constantly growing towards the light of optimality while it divides itself into more branches, among which we have latin american spanish, spain spanish, and the language of the sefardim, the latter of which may in fact be closer to the language of de las Casas.

Segundo, no se cuan bien dominas el ingles, notaras que di una cifra de mas de unos 200 millones de hispanoparlantes en el continente americano. Lo que indica que el numero actual puede ser mucho mayor. Por ultimo, muchos de los grandes maestros literarios han muerto. Lo mismo se puede decir de los espanoles. Cela - DEP, Unamuno - DEP, etc.. etc.
No conozco a nadie que diga más de 200 para decir más de 300. Más de 200 implica menos de 300. Al menos en el mundo de los que hablan con propiedad, ya sea en inglés o en español o en alemán, la referencia es el número más alto aproximado.

As for accents, if you're unaware that there are different accents in the different Spanish speaking countries... what can I say? It's not a secret.

He visto ya varios videos de Viggo hablando en español. Este hombre siente más respeto y admiración por nuestra lengua que muchos de nosotros. Viggo es de origen anglosajon pero se crió en la provincia del Chaco (Argentina). Toma mate, es hincha de San Lorenzo de Almagro y es tan argentino que estadounidense. Si es que eso es posible...
Uno es de donde se sienta parte. Seguro Argentina le marcó y es por eso que siente tanto apego por ese país y su idioma (claramente habla con acento argentino).
Se que él no es hispano y por eso lo digo. Muchas celebridades hispanas en USA que dicen se sienten orgullosos y 100% de sus paises de origen apenas balbucean el idioma. En realidad, y no es un secreto, muchos de ellos lo hacen para quedar bien. Viggo al menos parece genuino en este sentido sin necesidad siquiera de serlo.
Pues si, hay muchas celebridades que no saben hablar español, pero son llamadas latinas solo por su apellido y rasgos fisicos... YO creo que alguien latino es quien nace en sudamerica o centroamerica, y se cria aqui, se cria con la cultura, el idioma, todo... sin importar sus raices... por ejemplo muchas de esas celebridades que tu dices pues ni saben nada de la cultura que tanto se sienten orgullosos. Some elements of his Latin American background come through in his diction, but overall he is speaking here in a CONTEMPORARY and accurately pronounced--if a bit stilted--Spanish. He does live in Madrid, and as a gifted multi-lingual person, there is no reason to accuse him of affectation.

Some fools here are fighting about how, what and why Viggo speaks Spanish so well (he spent his childhood in South America) and why that accent (just using the appropriate one for a 16th century Spanish friar/historian from Seville) while missing the best part of his reading, Las Casas description of indigenous people of the Americas and abuse and atrocities committed by European colonizers against them. For example, I'm not American but now live in an English-speaking society, and I have become (for the most part) monolingual. Though I can understand two other languages spoken by my parents, I'm unable to converse in it. Why? Because I no longer live at home, and English has become the only language I need to speak.

@Mongoose2210 Er, you do know that tanushko was praising his Spanish as well, right? Viggo isn't bilinigual, btw, but multilingual - fluently conversant in English, Spanish, Danish. Some of us harbor a simple appreciation of this characteristic.
By the way, the accent you refer to is deliberate and relevant to the historical period in which Barlome de Las Casa wrote/spoke. Obviously when Mr Mortensen speaks contemporary Spanish, he doesn't use the "assinine accent" to which you refer.

His Spanish is perfect.
His pronunciation is clear and modern in the interest of clarity. There was a transition from the pronunciation of ce and ci from [tse] and [tsi] to their modern counterparts. To me it is certain that these consonants were still forming into their modern variants. That's why there was the divergence between those two large groups of the fine language Spanish. Perfect reading by Viggo. Incredibly beautfiul. He is talented and spiritual.

Spanish like every languages is a branch constantly growing towards the light of optimality while it divides itself into more branches, among which we have latin american spanish, spain spanish, and the language of the sefardim, the latter of which may in fact be closer to the language of de las Casas.

En las escuelas en América Latina no enseñan realmente la verdadera historia, como dices, sino "su" versión de la historia. La historia no es única y objetiva, sino distinta y opinable quien la cuente. What are YOU talking about? Don't preach me I'm a native speaker and fyi there's more than 300 million Spanish speakers in America (the continent). Less than 50 million in Europe. Which doesn't mean we speak the same way.

Alli encontre muchos acentos. Si nos ubicamos en la cuenca caribena encontramos que predominan acentos muy parecidos a los de andalucia y sobretodo Canarias. Claro, no son exactamente iguales pero si muestran rasgos del habla andaluza-canaria.

Si realmentes has vivido en Madrid y en Asturias y no eres capaz de distinguir esos acentos del de Méjico, qué quieres que te diga. No hay nada que discutir. Y por más que en Canarias o Andalucía seseen y aspiren las eses, como hacen en América, si crees que eso implica que son acentos parecidos, es que no tienes un oído muy fino.

Segundo, no se cuan bien dominas el ingles, notaras que di una cifra de mas de unos 200 millones de hispanoparlantes en el continente americano. Lo que indica que el numero actual puede ser mucho mayor. Por ultimo, muchos de los grandes maestros literarios han muerto. Lo mismo se puede decir de los espanoles. My reply was for someone who claimed our accent (Spain's, the original accent) is awful, so I replied it's none of their business as they don't speak like us in the American Spanish speaking countries. And it's a fact their usage of verb tenses is a lot more simplified, just an example of different usages in grammar.
As for accents, if you're unaware that there are different accents in the different Spanish speaking countries... what can I say? It's not a secret.

Most of this is fanciful rubbish, a form of murder-and-mutilation pornography peculiar to the era but most pronounced in the Spanish. You can find similar gore in hagiographical literature of the time, describing tortures and torments of the martyrs. Note that Las Casas didn't actually see the events he describes; he is reporting stories he was told, and often reuses the same cliches.

Uno es de donde se sienta parte. Seguro Argentina le marcó y es por eso que siente tanto apego por ese país y su idioma (claramente habla con acento argentino).
Se que él no es hispano y por eso lo digo. Muchas celebridades hispanas en USA que dicen se sienten orgullosos y 100% de sus paises de origen apenas balbucean el idioma. En realidad, y no es un secreto, muchos de ellos lo hacen para quedar bien. Viggo al menos parece genuino en este sentido sin necesidad siquiera de serlo.

Mortensen born NYC - American mother & Danish father. Family moved to Venezuela, Argentina & Denmark, settling in Argentina. He learned Spanish. When he was 11, his parents divorced. He moved with his father to Copenhagen. Mortensen & his father eventually went back to the U.S. After high school, he returned to Denmark before again returning to the United States to pursue an acting career.
