Just incredible race from Pieter VDH! He started 5th, behind the American, Italian, and Ian Thorpe and still managed to finish 2nd! I wonder what was his split.
thats bull it was just a sore throat your at the olympic games, you have to hall ass in whatever condition youre in. a sore throat is little you should move past it and still preform good but if you cant then you should have given your spot to someone else. i dont see it as likely that he could have gone the 49 in preliminaries for the 100 free but he went a 50 here where it counts.
@Sm1le43 he is retired. But just look at the time Alain Bernard swim to win a gold medal 2 weeks ago, it was 48,50. That is almost 1 second behind Hoogenbands old record time. It is obvius that previus years were the swimmers so good only because the new swimsuit.
@addiction2rock I completely agree that suit made beating records easier. However, do you think that suit plays the main role? The suit decreases friction against water just on 5%
@Sm1le43 im a swimer and yea it does make a big difference. no records have been broken this year cause of the suit change. it may only be 5% but it still makes a big differene
@maskedriderghost Can 5% make a big difference? Results in sport, such as in swimming, have been always becoming higher, nevertheless some equipment or suits. I think there is too big attention to the suits and all forgot that person beats records, but not the cloth
@Sm1le43 suits don't make a diffrence??? that worng man
21.64 was the world record on the 50 free from 2000 to 2008 and it was broken by 10-11 swimmers who never before even came close to those times and this happened just when the lzr came out
@splitkostanjeuma I didn't say that suit didn't make a difference (read properly). I said that everyone paid too much attention to suit because of its marvelous quality to "drop" time and everybody forgot that the results had been improving since the swimming appeared though swimmers didn't have the suits in those times. I am sure that the record on 50m free would be beaten without suit. Swimmers just needed time
If the US coaches knew Ian Crocker was sick, they would have put him on the Prelim relay. If they used this order: Phelps, Walker, Hall Jr, Lezak, then the US might have won this race or at least get the silver.
Crocker was a big disappointment in this olympic games good thing he wasnt in the 2008 4 x 100 relay

@addiction2rock You wrote that Hoogenband is the best. Perhaps you mean that his technique is the best, coz his records aren't smth incredible now
Sm1le43 1 year ago
@Sm1le43 all the later records were only possible because of the new swimming siut, which is now prohibited

@Sm1le43 if there is competition in the pool then yeah they can beat a record, but the suit can drop about half a second which is a lot in swimming

well you're right but i still find it a bit unfair
now records stand at times that these guys haven't swam themselves but with so much assistence from the suits
in my opinion there are a lot of record that would still be standing if it weren't for the suits
around 2000 or so swimming started to reach the max of human capabilities just like in running for example
sure record would still fall but not like this not every record in the books and i think hoogie would still be holding the 100free
