REM has always been my favorite band, and it's awesome to see Accelerate doing really well. It should, as it's the best ever since Automatic for the People. REM is simply fantastic, and they never cease to amaze me with their creativity.

Just for the record, Pat McCarthy is a great producer and Up is their best album with Automatic and New adventures

Exacctly 11redder. Peter Buck himself has said they are unhappy with the last three records. Pat McCarthy was the wrong producer for them. Jacknife Lee is gonna help them make a great record, he's recording them in a church, so maybe thay's an omen!

In Bertisfans defence I think he may have been implying overproduction negatively impacted upon recent records by hiding R.E.M.'s raw sound (a sentiment many would agree with), rather than saying they needed a great producer to sound good.

That's a very inappropriate way to put that. Believe me, I know how much people love to hate Around The Sun (and sometimes Up) and whine endlessly about it, but don't blame the band for you being displeased. For one, you needn't listen to it, next don't act like R.E.M. owes you anything.

I won't lie and say that ATS is my favorite album, but I do love it for what it is. Everything has flaws. People should just take it easy with the bitching, R.E.M. is the greatest and always will be, they don't need to have to be living up to any stupid standards people set up for them.

Stipe said in an interview about Accelerate that he wishes people would just take the albums for what they are standing alone, without comparing them to others. He also recognised that it was a lot to ask. He's dead right though- ATS had its moments and Leaving New York is one of my favourite songs by them. Accelerate is brilliant, and one of the best in my opinion.
