Without short circuit it is not loaded. When you draw an arc you are putting a load on the transformer. Think of it as a toaster. Plugged in it doesnt draw much current. When you turn it on it draws quite a lot. That explains the 2 amp without 30 amp with shortcircuit.
Yea, but the primary of the pig has low resistance and inductance so it seems that it should draw enough current to trip the breaker instantly(i might be wrong about the incuctance or resistance part but i am sure i am right about one of 'em)
if you just wheeled this thing away with a dolly isn't that steeling, and they'd come looking for it?

nice transformer, but actually you could get longer arcs
look at my potential transformers :P
i´m running without any resonat capacitors an i get about 30-50cm arcs :P
try another ballast, mots are crappy for current limiting xD

I know that. I meant that because the distribution transformer usually pulls tons of current due to low secondary(primary in this case) inductance.

I liked it
I know nothing about power supply transformers
I do wish you would put some slides with schematics in to make things clearer -please
I have always assumed the pole pigs are run back wards to their normal operation is that correct ?
So is the st up MOT 110 in and 1000 volts out
( or are you using it as a current ballast?)
1000 k into the pole pig so what voltage out
It seem as though you have four MOT caps which would indicate only about 5- 10Kv
