Technically with weaknesses, but musically it really spots some new moods and characters in Schuberts masterpieces, which alone is worth listening to. Let us not forget that Gulda was getting famous for his crossover style in Jazz music, and, regarding this, is doing a fantastic job here.
Like Mozart, Schubert is also very hard to fill with real passion and life, and even harder to make it sound simple and easy going, when you listen to it.
Quiet unusual interpretation from an original artist and a fantastic pianist. Some fresh air in a piece so often boring with other interprets who to play it nice. I imagine that Beethoven would have played Schubert like that !
Also, it occurs to me, it's very hard to switch gears between jazz riffing and classical control. Sort of like playing Bartok and then Mozart afterwards.
Well ok, if you mean does he use "classic" technique, aw well, I'd have to agree, no not really. Yeah he is kind of showy. I've only heard him play this is the first time I've ever seen him play. I have several cd's of him playing Beethoven. Personally I have no problem with him, I hear everything. My personal opinion is that I think he's brilliant.
I just don't think he practiced it enough. I'm all in favour of his reaction against music snobs, but not when it spills over into a complacency about the actual music.
wonderful lovely

Gulda didn't show up to please your refined tastes. It was his interpretation of the music, whether you like it or not.

Everyone has off nights. He doesn't look particularly well here. He was a very intriguing artist.

His playing is way too Coarse for my taste. He just pounds out much of this piece as he rushes through the whole work.
