  • Awesome groove master...............

  • That, in my opinion, is one of the best sounding snares I've every heard. :D

  • What a combative bunch for a brotherhood, assuming that most of the respondents here are drummers. Relax, uptight ones! 'Subjective' is the most important term to bear in mind when debating the merits of music and musicians. Shitty solo. Equipment issues, on-camera. How might you perform under the same conditions? 'Genius'? Overused, imprecise term. Even geniuses suck at times. I wonder if he switched to Ludwig after this fiasco? They had the 'spur-loc' to stop BD creep. Ringo used one pre-'68.

  • The drum set moves on the floor, poor guy has to correct time to time :D

  • @Pir44tti and he still kept on pushing through and kicking ass! :D

  • This is a terrible drum solo by one of the best drummers ever! One has to remember ,Elvin was a musical genius, not a technician. I've seen him live many times, and was always amazed with his ability to play in 3/4 to a 4/4 tune. To this day, the only other drummer that came close was Rashid Ali. (Another musical genius)

  • theres no debating his role in music but especially jazz. He's the jimmy hendrix of drums and could could play like he invented the music. pure genius and talent

  • To be fair to the greats, Joe Morello had a thing going. But this solo has a lot more.... Soul I guess. I mean, depending on what song he is solo around, I'm positive that this solo contains almost all of the melody of it. Thats how Elvin played. As to what b00mhauer is talking about, he likes having a constant beat. Fine. But don't go crapping all over everyone else when you can't figure out what he's doing. As to your time frame, seems standard lick. Rhythmic, and progressively faster...

  • So powerful, poor guys bass drum.

  • eLVIN HAD A POWERFULL BASS DRUM HIT

  • That snare!!!

  • weak solo.

  • He played very hard most of the time and a lot of single notes

  • Elvin was always shit on the solos. He played great with Coltrane and he's a legend, but he was one of those drummers who needed the beat and the pulse of the band to function. He would play best when backing the band and exploring new sounds. On his own he was lost, and the heroin didn't help either. Just shambles. If you want to see a solo that's both very technical AND totally groovy, smooth and musical, check out Joe Morello, especially the 1964 Sounds of the Loop solo.

  • @b00mhauer joe morello!!!!!!!!

  • @b00mhauer fuck you sir, elvin jones shit bricks on joe morello, this is obviously too complex of a drummer for you to handle

  • @5000Flores Behold, the "too complex for you" -argument. And could you point out to me, oh wise one, which things in particular are so fucking amazing in this? Elvin was so strung out during this it's like someone put an epileptic narcoleptic in front of a drum set. I mean, 1:10 - 1:37... what the fuck, really? This whole solo's like someone - very inadequate - testing out a drum set. Throwing out all the licks you know doesn't make a good solo, especially if you're out of it.

  • @b00mhauer You're an idiot and you've grossly overexposed your primitive understanding of music. Therefore, go jump off a fucking bridge.

  • @shawoody Well I'd like to see you point out the greatness of this solo, genius. There's no rhythm, no continuity, no technically impressive licks, no fucking sense at all. Elvin just tries one thing, whether it's single strokes, double strokes or limp wristed triplets, fucks it up and goes to try another thing he knows but doesn't master. Can't even keep the hi-hat going. Someone like Morello could play a great solo while adjusting his glasses or his bass drum at the same time.

  • @b00mhauer If one needs to explain the genius of Elvin Jones to you, there is no hope for you, period. You have no ears and zero understanding of rhythm, the art of improvised music, or the true meaning of innovation. Enjoy your linear transcription-friendly Joe Morello licks and dotted eighth notes. Elvin has more than enough people who witness his genius and know what it is. Elvin is the bridge between Papa Joe and Dennis Chambers, who, by the way, said Elvin was "the greatest of all time."

  • Wow.I was 6. Makes me feel kinda humbled. This is great shit! But I have one thing to say,Duct tape.

  • @semiLivedj I was just thinking how I was FOUR when this was recorded. It looks like it should be a bit older than that, but much older B&W footage can be hard to date. The duct tape suggestion makes me smile: tried and true. I knew a guy who had hardware that was literally held together by layers of it.

  • @theoriginalbillholt I still do have duct tape on stuff.I tape my pedals down for every show. And use it after the show in the hotel room,Hahahaha.

  • That is a black man.

  • Am i the only one that thinks this is the worst drum solo ever? its pants compared to what else is out there! I mean take charlie Daniels band or foo fighters.

  • @billygoatUK go back to 2002 you bonehead

  • @billygoatUK Just because you don't understand how to count time in the technical world of jazz drumming doesn't mean that rock or country drumming is superior. Elvin Jones was one of the most innovative, technical and creative drummers the world has even seen. He was the first drummer to really make great use of the middle note of the triplet in jazz drumming. Just because you can't understand " Energy equals Mass times the Speed of Light Squared " doesn't mean it's not a brilliant theory.

  • @billygoatUK Yes. Yes you are. Foo Fighters? This must be a joke. Those clowns wouldn't even exist had it not been for Elvin and the other greats like him. I don't even.

  • Those drums said Fuck It and tried to walk off stage........lls

  • Wow, reminds me of Billy Cobham + Damon Che

  • Moby Dick? oh thats right jazz was doing this way before bonham - pity the rock world didn't know it.

  • I DO NOT EVEN KNOW WHO IN THE FUCK IS 'JONAS BROTHER ' IS.

TRIFORCE---- I DO NOT CARE FOR YOUR RUDE COMMENTS

I SAID ELVIN JONES AND HIS BROTHERS ARE GREAT EDUCATORS THAT NURTURE YOUNG JAZZ MUSICIANS.

  • I remember back when bass drums always slid around. You would have thought that someone would have figured out how to prevent that before 1968.

  • One, of my first impromtu gigs , was on a stage ,that should have been for iceskaters . did'nt bring anything. One Hit and it was Gone, Had to have a fat dude sit on the Bass. Embarrassing as Hell .. slippery when wet...

  • unreal!!!!! You know your good when you make it look so damn easy....god bless talent...god bless Mr E.Jones..

  • JONES BROTHERS ARE EDUCATORS THEY MENTOR UP AND COMING GREAT ARTISTS LIKE THE MARSALIS BROTHERS OWE A LOT TO JONES BROTHERS

  • @yungsu100 shut the fuck up, good sir

  • @yungsu100 whew.. at first i thought you said "jonas brothers." if that is what you had said... i might've hunted you down.. (:

  • After this, Elvin played a vicious solo on the head of the person who was supposed to anchor the bass drum.

  • @carlgerde True that bother! I hate when my bass drum slides around..

  • This why my brother and I loved Elvins drumming so much...Amazing musical drumming .......Tullius

  • The most melodic and swingin drummer of all time...........Rob Tullius
